I have no problems transcoding my collection if necessary, it's not such a hard work. Almost all of my collection is in .flac so it's easy enough if I need them all in MP3 eventually.

The firmware update for this device is rather messy and worky. I don't quite remember how I did it exactly, but you could try do it in repair mode and see if it helps.
