In my experience, modern linux distros handle MTP devices better than Windows does. The stock MTP driver MS provides is extremely slow/buggy.

Most of the DACs in smartphones will be able to do 24/96 at least. No idea if any actually enable that in Android though, and most probably don't have the SNR to do better than 16 bit resolution...

I think you're misunderstanding how these devices work. They're more like PCs with an enormous library of applications you can install to do what you want than PMPs that play just a handful formats....
