Smartphones are getting much better at media playback. The Galaxy S line is obviously intended to be big on media (as Samsung's direct Take That at the iPhone), and I can vouch for the sound quality...

It's not laziness, there are actual practical reasons to want this. Most touchscreens these days are capacitive and thus will not work without direct skin contact. You can't use them with gloves on....
