Pono DAP Saves Universe from Destruction?

Warner, Universal and Sony are already on board, with Warner at least having already converted 8,000 titles to 192kHz/24-bit sound to be compatible with the incoming music player.

An MP3 has less than 5 percent of the data found in a [Pono] master file or a vinyl record.
It looks like someone forgot to do a bit of research and some ABXing.

Well ya' know what they say:

Some 1di0t$ & their money will soon be parted ...

Tapeworm 09-29-2012 01:55 PM

Most of Neil Young's brain cells were destroyed decades ago anyway.

WalkGood 09-29-2012 01:59 PM

"Young explains that he wants to "rescue" music"

hmm seems I've heard similar words from another artist in the quest to make more money ... Another thought is how well that triangle will fit in your jean pockets

RaduSpeedy 09-29-2012 02:04 PM

They'll make a pouch for it, that will also fit your (almost) portable amp

What no TOSLINK out :D

I notice the word they use is "converted" not "remastered" those 8000 albums. Remastering 8000 albums would be really expensive. Much cheaper to just upconvert and resample the existing titles. If they do it poorly enough it would distort the sound enough to give it that "audiophile" touch.:D

Depending on what pocket you use, it might impress the ladies . . .

The DarkSide 09-29-2012 04:01 PM

At least the Beats crap is software based & I can choose not to use it. I have it on my laptop - totally useless.

Strictly speaking these are no big claims - it is no problem to inflate a file with junk data so that the original is a mere 5% in size, so without further information this does not tell us anything about the qualities of these Pono master files. It is also not surprising that "an MP3" (one file, one song) is much smaller than the data representing a vinyl record (~10 songs).

Obviously that marketing quote is intended to give an impression of superiour quality. Whether its actual meaninglessness is due to an intent to mislead, a lack of understanding or mere sloppiness, that is a different question.

Do they actually mean convert, or are they offering 24/192, because I assume the record companies actually have 24/192 files so converting wouldn't make much sense. . .

Either way it's fucking bat shit. I also laughed when I saw that it had three corners. Brilliant!

I think they might mean one side of a 7 inch, 45 rpm single.

Pono - The Apple Killer

The iPod Killer.

http://www.tonedeaf.com.au/news/inte...pod-killer.htm

I admire the guy's confidence when he pukes all that BS.

That thing looks effin' wonderful and creative. I'd buy 2 of them and strap each on my chest. With a bra, you needn't worry about pockets.

The DarkSide 10-01-2012 07:09 AM

Too bad up converting crap music leads to larger sized crap music files.
