Samsung YP-U7

The YP-U7 has not been officially announced yet but it already got its RAA (Radio Research Agency) certification in Korea as you can see on this screenshot. Good news for those who thought Samsung has abandoned its "classic" player range since the Galaxy Players.
No pic or info at the moment except that it will be a USB key player with a FM tuner without any doubt.

I hope it will be available in 8GB capacity with a microSD slot to compete with the Sansa Clip but nothing sure about that because of the U series history: Samsung used to only change a bit the design while keeping the same UI and basic specs. Thus the U7 might only be a U6 with a new design.

I bet on an official announcement late August.

They won't send anything over 2GB over here to the USA, if past history is any indication.

I had a UK model 4GB U5 for a while, and it was a great sounding little player with better battery life than a Clip.

Here we are!

Same design as the U6 but uglier, same basic specs (fitness feature, FM tuner, color screen), same UI. A bit thinner (9,7 vs 12,3mm) and a new silver version and that's it. According to the info I found on the Samsung website, only a 2 and 4GB versions are planned. No 8GB version, no microSD slot.

The user manual is now available http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...1.0_120621.pdf

The USB cap/cover of the U2 and U5 comes back. What a stupid idea...The sliding USB key of the U6 was a good idea. Why change that?
New icons in the menu. Otherwise it's exactly the same UI, features and settings as on the U6

Its 2012 and no news about yp-u7 is it discontinued :(

lebellium 07-14-2012 10:40 AM

The U7 has not even been officially announced yet, how could it be discontinued??

craftspirit 08-27-2012 03:19 PM

Hi. I am samsung yp-u7 4 Gb owner (Russia, Moscow). It's a cool device, but there is no microphone, and there is no opportunity to create (draw) new Popcon. The USB cover is better (my opinion), because there will be no dust from the pocket and USB slider could be broken some day. Sorry for my poor english.

lebellium 08-28-2012 06:21 AM

Hum interesting :)
It seems the U7 has only been released in Russia yet. I'm waiting for the release in other European countries.
Where did you buy it and at what price?

Can you take some pics?

craftspirit 09-01-2012 10:05 AM

I bought it in SMARTPHOTO.RU
price 41.56$ (1330 rubles)
It's thinner then U6 (9.72 mm).

lebellium 09-01-2012 10:49 AM

Thank you.
What's your current firmware? (settings>system>about)

Again, could you please post some pics here? I haven't seen any real pic of the U7 on the internet yet.

craftspirit 09-02-2012 02:25 AM

Firmware is:
1.00 RU-00-LF3

It's lengh is completely the same as a credit card, ha-ha ))

Here are the photos:

lebellium 09-02-2012 04:38 AM

Cool thank you :)

It's a pity there are almost no improvements over the U6. It's basically the same device with another design. It can't compete with the Sansa Clip+/Clip Zip without microSD slot :(

Well I'll see the price in France or Germany before buying it. I guess it will be more expensive than in Russia.

lebellium 09-05-2012 04:38 PM

1st presentation of the U7 on the Samsung Italy website

james_chyn 10-23-2012 08:30 AM

Anyone know the USB cover is made of plastic or aluminum ?

lebellium 10-23-2012 08:47 AM

Good question. I can't say from the pictures above. I guess only craftspirit can tell us for now as he's the only U7 owner I know.

Stupid Samsung released the U7 in Russia early September and almost 2 months later it is still not released anywhere else in the world, not even in home country South Korea!! WTF, that's just crazy

It *should* be available in Germany early November. I'll get one for a review :)

The DarkSide 10-25-2012 06:56 PM

God, I want this with a micro sd card slot!!!

I had a 4GB U5 for a while....it was a nice little player. Sound was equal to a Sansa, as I recall, and the battery life was better than a Clip. But alas, it was only 4GB with no slot.

lebellium 11-09-2012 12:42 PM

The U7 has finally been released in Germany today. I'll buy one soon to review it :)

The U7 is available in Russia, Italy and Germany so far.

lebellium 11-14-2012 02:26 PM

My YP-U7 arrived today :D

First ugly pictures (I'll try to take better shots for the review lol):

If you have any question, just ask, I'll answer here or in the review.

Something funny:
With default EU region code, there is no FM menu. So I thought maybe it's because they removed in hardware the FM tuner for European models like on the YP-F3 (no FM chipset and no European FM tax = cheaper retail price) BUT after changing the region code to KR, the FM menu shows up AND the radio works Oo

skip252 11-14-2012 02:50 PM

IIRC they had the radio disabled in the EU firmware on the sansa e200 series players. Something about their ability to record the radio being considered enabling piracy in some places.

Looking forward to the review. At the prices they want for a DAP like this with no expansion slot I can't imagine I'd get one. It's still nice to know whats it's like.

Doubtful they'll release it in the US anyway. The U6 never made it here.
