Sound quality test:Zen, ZenXFi vs VisionM?
Hi Everyone!

I love my Zen Vision M (32gb).
The sound quality reproduction is terrific; rich and present. Great highs and wonderful full bass. The standard for good sound for me. But as we all know, it's a little on the bulky side.

I also have a Zen V plus for knocking around with which has definite inferior sound qualityto the Vision M; a touch on the weaker, slightly muddy side that EQ can't compensate for. Obvious generational loss....not great. So I learned that all Creatives are not created equal.

I'd like to buy either a 'Zen' 32gb (I love the pocket size) or possibly Zen X-Fi, or X-Fi2

Can any previous or current owners of the Vision M and the other Zens mentioned shed some light on the comparative sound qualities?
I really have my eyes on the 'Zen' (they're still around) but concerned that it'll disappoint me and sound more "V Plus-y".

Yeah , I'm a bit of a perfectionist....but the Vision M's sound was ideal for me as the litmus test.

Thanks for your feed back!! :D

You won't be disappointed with the Zen.

Thanks for your reply.
So, from your experience, the Zen sound quality is comparable to the Zen Vision M?

coachop94 07-02-2010 02:17 AM

Yes, to me it is. Of course the headphones used matter as well. I kinda collect those. No real expensive ones. I do have a couple sets of Shure E2's that I use often but around the house I use some JVC flats (they are comfy) & the Zen sounds very good.

The way I compare my units is to play both of them through the same components - external speakers through sound system and also headphones, and in my case the Vision M clearly had the edge no matter how hard I tweaked the Zen V Plus. No contest.

I guess my concern is that the Creative Zen is a flash player as is the V Plus versus the hard drive on the Vision. The price for the Zen has gone up considerably recently. It wouldn't be a prob if Creative was still selling them on their site for $130.

The Zen sounds much better than a ZenV ever will. I did a test with my players & I can say I could not tell the difference. Where I you looking for a player? I shop Ebay for players that have been discontinued. I don't buy from sellers with a feedback of less than 99% & I do read feedback on sellers even if it's 100%

bobgure 07-02-2010 02:20 PM

Yeah, I've been looking at ebay. Creative is no longer selling the 32GB version at their outlet. For a while they had it down to $139, but I missed the opportunity.
I think I'll spring for the Zen at Ebay.

Do you know if the Creative MediaSource 5 Organizer will work for the Zen or is there new software with the Zen to load my files?

Thanks for your ongoing help. : )

I use WMP11 on a Vista computer. I have CMS5 on there but My Music library is in WMP11 & Zune. I have older players that need CMS5 to be installed for using them. This one for a 32GB ending REAL soon. http://cgi.ebay.com/Creative-Technol...item3a5c5cec28 This auction is for a 16GB of interested. I have purchased from this seller in the past. http://cgi.ebay.com/CREATIVE-LABS-ZEN-DVP-FL0001-16GB-MP3-PLAYER-/330447705075?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Other_MP3_Players&has h=item4cf037d3f3 http://cgi.ebay.com/CREATIVE-LABS-ZE...item4cf037d3f3

Wow. Where did these come from?!
I've been searching "Creative Zen 32GB Player", when I needed to also search for "Creative technology...."
The 32GB one looks like a great find....but don't I need a installation CD included?

bobgure 07-02-2010 03:48 PM

I won the auction for the used 32Gb Zen player.
I got a good price on the unit and thanks for pointing it out to me.

However, I just realized that the software wasn't included in the package and I'm wondering if Creative media source 5 organizer will recognize the Zen.
I think the Zen needs something called Creative Centrale or similar. Is it possible to find this program online?
It's probably easier for me to use the Creative software to transfer although I've heard one can use Windows Explorer or WMP - both of which I've never used to transfer files. I didn't plan on synching the player up with WMP.

You do not need the install disc. Creative Centrale is horrible software. LOTS of complaints. I'm used to WMP 11 it works for me transfers the albumart ect.

Will Creative MediaSource 5 Organizer (which I have installed) work with the Zen?

As long as I can use the CreativeMediaSource, i'll have no problems, as long as the Zen is recognized by my system. Any reason why it shouldn't?
Hopefully i'll just be able to connect the Zen to my comp and be detected.

You have not said what OS/SP is your system??

bobgure 07-03-2010 03:09 PM

Oh yes, forgot to mention essentials.
Windows XP SP3

coachop94 07-03-2010 03:30 PM

No reason for it not to work.

Try the Zen X-fi Style which can play FLAC.

I have compared my Zen Vision M 30gb which is the BEST sound quality i have ever heard from any mp3 player to the Zen X-fi Style.

I used the same song with WAV 1411kbps on vision m and FLAC on x-fi style through my high-end earphones.. Jerry Harvey's JH16 Pro. They sounded pretty much similar. The buttons on the xfi style are not friendly to press though.

My Zen Vision M is still going strong so no intentions of upgrading yet.

I received the Zen and pretty disappointed with the audio quality.
No comparison to the brilliant Vision M.

The Zen's EQ is almost worthless....I've been endlessly tweaking to get 'water from a stone'.
It would be helpful if they gave out true specifications - freq response, sig to noise ratio etc. instead of me having to do guesswork and rely on other people's ears.

Maybe the flash drive players can't sound as good as hard drive ones. I don't know.

The Vision M has audiophile high end sound quality - very little loss of original sound on the mp3.
I don't know if the X-Fi is worth the gamble. I hear it's horrendous to try to work the controls and other probs.
Do you Have the x-fi or just did the sound comparison in a store?

Thanks for responding...
