Broken power button

hey guys,

i shut my player off, went to breakfast... came home and tried to switch the player on... the power slider now just slides loosely back and forth with no tension. as opposed to when it's not broke, a little spring (im guessing) pushes the button back into the neutral position.

Mf1232 05-22-2010 09:34 PM

no help? come on now... i can't even use my s9!
should i just pry the power slider off?

Send it to Cowon to get fixed?

Same problem.Quick solution, completely remove button and your left with stick.Looks a little ghetto but works perfectly and will take you 10mins.Just remove the 4 screws at each corner, remove button and close.

If itís under a year old you can contact Cowon via their website for an RMA, if you do open it before the year is up, youíll void the warranty.

thread revived from the dead? I had the same problem & contacted Cowon, they sent me a new power button for about £5, but it's really stiff and I hate using my s9 now :/

Who did you contact for this? I've had a the power button break TWICE, each time both Cowon and Repair companies refuses to send me the switch and I have to send it away for 3 weeks for a cost of £60.

"I am sorry to tell you that we donít sell supplies separately."

Do I need to tell you I will never buy a Cowon product again?

If not selling you parts is the reason, I don't believe any other company is going to sell you parts either ...

lol. this thread is officially a zombie...

anyways, so my power button has broken since May, it's now November. I just pulled the power button out without taking my S9 apart and now I just use an Exacto (if that's how you spell it) knife. the knife has a really pointy tip so I charge my Cowon at night and turn it on in the morning with the knife. then i just pause it when i'm not using it and it stays on all day. I get about 3 days out of it before I have to charge it again.

it's pretty bad having to use a knife to turn your mp3 player on... but whatever, it works I guess. I just miss the hold function really.

lol this seems to be a weak point of the S9, because mine broke too. It's been past a year so I just took it apart and removed the outer layer like in picture. Since then I've been using my fingernails to pluck that little stub. Then THAT broke too. So now I have to use like a paperclip to stick it inside and push. @@

If somehow something breaks again inside...

Cheers Calv45, copied what you have done. Have you found a better solution yet though?

Just got mine back after 3 weeks, got a brand new S9 from Cowon directly just for a broken power-button... Contacted my online retailer (EU-based) and they contacted Cowon and got me a brand new one, so try to use your warranty before you open your player

Look at me, look at me, I just sent mine back with a broken volume-down button and power button! I lived with the volume down break because it was literally ONE WEEK out of warranty and COWON wouldn't repair it! Needless to say I'm going to write a letter...the sad part is however, there are simply no better mp3 players on the market...the D3 is going to be amazing if the software catches up...and the J3 is awesome too. This is my third COWON product and honestly I dropped it once or twice...and didn't have a gel case or anything...

If this was my first experience with COWON though, they'd have lost a customer who recommends their product to all their friends. I'll take one for the team most likely, but this issue is a pretty big deal...power buttons should never break.

jpod 04-18-2011 11:10 PM

Same here. The power button spring quit working and then a day later, the entire button quit working and just flaps in the breeze.

It broke around Thanksgiving last year and I was out of town with a sick relative till Feb. I know, I should have sent it in, but I was so aggrivated at myself for buying Cowon. Every mp3 player I've ever owned has a broken power switch. I'm starting to think my next player will be an iPod, it's the only brand I've never owned.

I've bought a Zune 8gb, and find that I like its button interface better than the S9 touch. But the Zune doesn't have speed control for listening to audiobooks so I have to go through a lengthy conversion process to increase the mp3 play speed, where as the S9 does it from the menu.

I'm missing my S9.

If anyone has a phone number to contact repair, please post. Thanks.

superglue+knife+little part from stem from a ballpoint pen+your imagination :)

Spenk009 05-16-2011 04:18 PM

Thanks @Rost for the simple line...
Reminded me i had stuck some clue onto my detached hold switch and let it dry for two days. Got a carpet knife (dont ask where that came from) and cut off the bits of glue that hindered the switch slotting. :)

And @jpod, either doing as i did and just jamming a little clue in, later cutting out what doesnt fit OR another look at the c2 I think are sensible solutions.. Which colour zune did you buy? (I repaired my brother's 4's hold switch in a similar way and im waiting for my modded 80 to return)

Mf1232 05-22-2011 10:07 AM

Why is this still ALIVE? lol.

Confispect 06-05-2011 05:08 PM

Funny one of my S9's just did this as well.

Guess i'll have call to call Amazon.

My powerbutton broke as well but it's very easily fixed as it turns out.
I picked the s9 apart and glued a small piece of plastic to the button on the area where the button was broke and now it works just fine!

If you do try to take the s9 apart you need to be careful when reassembling it because the are lots of small plastic pieces to fit together at the same time as you're trying to keep the volume buttons and such in place.
