Known Working HDD Swaps for Zen Vision M

Hi guys,

I'm considering upgrading my Zen Vision M with a larger HDD.

I currently have a 60GB fatty version and want to upgrade it with a thin Samsung HS082HB (80GB, 8MB Buffer, 5mm) since I have one of the 30GB-covers in spare and hate the bulkiness of the fat ZVM. I have read through all the HDD-threads available but nobody seems to have tried this swap.

Since the mod section has become quite a bit crowded with hdd-regarded questions and the current sticky has become confusing due to the mass of comments I suggest we open a new thread stating only tested swaps in this form:

Player version: 30GB / 60GB Slim / 60GB Fat (Firmware: e.g. 1.21.02e)
Installed drive: e.g. Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 Slim (HTC426060G8CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: e.g. Samsung HS082HB (80GB, 8MB, 5mm)
Status: works / in progress / doesn’t work (state reason why)

Comments: Problems occurring during installation process

Im going to start with my project. It would help the clarity of the thread if the mods could erase any comments stating anything else than tested hdd-swaps.

Samsung HS082HB in 60GB Fat

Player version: 60GB Fat (Firmware: 1.21.02e)
Installed drive: Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 Slim (HTC426060G8CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Samsung HS082HB (80GB, 8MB, 5mm)
Status: works
Comments: ZIF-Connector didn't fit right away because the Samsung hdds use slimer (height) ones but after a bit sanding it works fine

Player version: 30GB (Firmware: e.g. 1.62.02)
Installed drive: Hitachi Travelstar C4K60 Slim (HTC426060G8CE00)

Toshiba MK1214GAH

Player version: 30GB (Firmware: 1.62.02)
Installed drive: Hitachi Travelstar (HTC426030G5CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Toshiba MK1214GAH (120GB, 8MB, 8mm)
Status: Works fine, Very tight fit due to 8mm height, ZIF extemely tight fit fair amount of careful force required. Total Space
114422MB, Current Free Space 60476MB (all music nothing else, all transferred in one long session).

Thanks to all the people on the forums who did all the ground work before my install, wouldn't have been possible without your effort

Player version: 30GB (Firmware: 1.62.02)
Installed drive:
Hitachi Travelstar C4K60-Slim (HTC426030G5CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Toshiba MK6028GAL
(60GB, 5mm)
Status: Works just fine
.

How to: Polish down the thickness of the fat ZIF cable on the backside of the connection pads so it'll fit into HDD's ZIF connector (even though some force had to be used). Boot in recovery mode, format the disc and reload ZVM:30GB firmware and you should be good to go.

Thanks to you all for tips and tricks on how to disassemble, flash, upgrade etc etc of ZVM.

E.

Player version: 30GB (Firmware: 1.62.02)
Installed drive:
Hitachi Travelstar C4K60-Slim (HTC426030G5CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Toshiba 3008GAL 30gb

Status: Works!

I wish I had seen the tip in the above post about sanding the ZIF adapter down. It was a tight fit to cram it in.

Thanks to everyone who posted how to disassemble and upgrade!

My Zen Vision M hard drive upgrade

Hi all, here is my info.

Player version: 30GB (Firmware: 1.62.02)
Installed drive:
Hitachi Travelstar (HTC426030G5CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Samsung HS082HB (80GB, 8MB, 5mm)
Status: works
Comments: ZIF-Sanding down the ZIF cable on the stiff plastic side actually works quite well. Just make sure you apply pressure little by little to get the cable in.

I would like to thank all of those people who have shared their experience and knowledge as well . I am one happy camper.

Player version: 30GB (Firmware: 1.21.02e)
Installed drive: Hitachi Travelstar (HTC426030G5CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Toshiba MK8025GAL
(80GB, 5mm)
Status: works
Comments: Standard sanding of ZIF connector to connect to the hdd, also if you get hard disk errors make sure the connectors in the right way up!

Thanks to everyone who posted!

InterKnight 10-12-2008 01:36 AM

Player version: 30GB
Installed drive: Toshiba MK3006GAL
Connector: Pins (changed to ZIF)
Replaced with: Toshiba MK8025GAL
(80GB, 5mm)
Status: works
Comments: Sanded ZIF a little, don't know if it helped, only got it in after much effort. Also re-soldered battery connector, because I broke it off when connecting the hdd (be careful the hdd doesn't slide down when you are connecting it!).

Player version: 30GB (Firmware: 1.21.02e)
Installed drive: Hitachi Travelstar (HTC426030G5CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Toshiba MK8025GAL (80GB, 5mm)
Status: works
Comments: I did not sand down. Just in case I wanted to go back to original. Carefully inserted the connector but as it is not fully inserted, the overall length is increased by 1mm so I removed the rubber strip inside the player, at the bottom to give it more space and does not put the zif connector under stress. All works fine. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this forum.
PS: looks like Internight did not remove the zif connector. This easily lifts away allowing easier fitting, away from your Zen!!
MK8025GAL bought at www.MoreComputers.com for 63. Quick delivery

Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Samsung HS082HB (80GB, 8MB, 5mm)

Comments: Sanded down the back of the ziff connection. Thought i hadn't even put the ziff connector 1/3 of the way in, but i tried it and it worked! Tried putting the blue rubber things back on but it doesn't close then. Jst left the one on the top on and took the bottom one off. Those little screws are a devil to get back in too!!

Would just like to thank everyone here for all your advice. Been waiting 2 months for a hardrive and all the research on this forum has paid off. Infact 2 and 1/3 times over!! :D cheers

Installed drive: Seagate 60 Gig Model: ST760211DE (Hard Disk failer after dropping the ZVM)
Connector: model PD1580G
Replaced with:
Status: works
Comments: I personaly can't recommend the Toshiba MK1214GAH (120GB, 8MB, 8mm) HD because that the new HD and not the Zip connector did not work for some reason.

New HDD for Creative Vision M 60gb Slim Edition

hi Brett
I also want to replace my 60g harddrive with a 120g harddrive and I read your thread on Abi-forums.I have the Creative Vision M : 60g Slim Edition with the Seagate ST760211DE harddrive and want to replace it with the Toshiba MK1231GAL (120g) harddrive. The same as yours, except mine will be 5mm high compared to your 8mm height. My question is : The old Seagate harddrive's RPM is 3600rpm and the new Toshiba harddrive's is 4200RPM.Will that affect the performance in any way? I m not really so experienced in these things and thought you might know.
Thank you
Lafras

brettreading 04-25-2009 04:34 AM

lafras

to be honest, I don't know if it will affect your performance -I hadnt even realised the seagate was 3600rpm. However, I do find boot up and queueing times take longer than before now....not overly long but certainly longer than with the original drive.

I just joined to say THANK YOU! Worked perfectly for me after a 1 meter drop flat on its back - broke the HDD - and without this forum would have gone to the mp3 player in the sky. It wasn't that hard to put back - gently gently.

One tip - MAKE SURE you put the ribbon cable back in the right way - unlike me who for an hour could not work out why it wasn't working :P Flipped it upside down and reconnected - voila! 60gig - 80gig ($100AU ebay). Rock On!

Player version: 30GB (Firmware before: 1.61.01e / after: 1.62.02)
Installed drive:
Hitachi Travelstar C4K60-Slim (HTC426030G5CE00)
Connector: ZIF
Replaced with: Toshiba MK1231GAL
(120GB, 5mm)
Status: Works

Comments: zif connector not sanded - had a hard time pushing it into place. New hard drive has the Apple logo on it. Its whole metallic side (without stickers) should look toward the battery. I had no difficulty to format, but some problems to load the firmware in order for the ZVM to work again (For details: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=35196)
