Do not ask where to get Gameboy ROMs, Doom WADs, etc!

Please refrain from asking where to download GB/GBC/Chip-8 ROMs, Doom WADs and other content that might be protected by copyright.

The doom wads are mostly opensource, so that shouldn't be a problem, but the GB roms should defiantly be avoided.

dfkt 04-22-2007 02:58 PM

Are you sure about ID Soft's original WADs or other commercial addons? I know that there are lots of FreeDoom WADs and similar, but I guess not everything WAD is free.

Anyway, here's a link to several legal resource sites for anyone who's looking for WADs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_WAD#External_links :)

OddBob 04-22-2007 03:57 PM

Far as I know, only the WAD for shareware Doom 1 is OK to download. I don't believe ID has made the WADs for Doom, Doom II, or Final Doom available as PD files.

Not that it's hard to find them online, of course. It can actually be harder to find legit copies.

Cruleworld 04-22-2007 04:40 PM

the stuff for doom isn't copyrighted cause if it were it wouldn't be on the
rockbox
site they do not allow stuff that they don't have rights to.

dfkt 04-22-2007 04:45 PM

Sure it is illegal to play copyrighted WADs and ROMs you do not own... Rockbox only provides the framework for playing these files, but not the actual game files.

Cruleworld 04-22-2007 04:58 PM

no the fiels fro doom are on there site.

dfkt 04-22-2007 04:59 PM

Those are FreeDoom WADs (and the free shareware versions of Doom), not the official full version files...

Cruleworld 04-22-2007 05:00 PM

oh didn't know the difference

OddBob 04-22-2007 10:50 PM

To play Rockbox Doom I had to install the WAD from my legal copy of Doom first.

dfkt 04-23-2007 07:24 AM

It seems this needs some more clarification. WAD files are simply "level files" (more or less) for the Doom engine. The original full-version ID Soft Doom levels are copyrighted and you may only play them on Rockbox if you actually own the game. The shareware versions of Doom WADs are free, and also many people made freely available levels anyone can download and play legally.

A lot of users are very happy with http://freedoom.sourceforge.net/download/ which is linked from the body of the Wiki article, but not in the external links section.

Perhaps the original post could be edited to point users to the free/shareware WADs? Like, a brief guide to obtaining WADs that are legal?

wow1012 05-22-2007 08:37 PM

why should gb roms be avoided?

OddBob 05-23-2007 03:11 AM

Because asking for them is a copyright violation and against the law (well, maybe not asking, but telling definitely would be). If the board doesn't stomp on that they could possibly be held liable. This applies to any roms or ISO's of copyrighted software, not just GBA roms, BTW.

venumx 06-08-2007 01:53 PM

if you get bored with the regular doom levels online like i did, you can always make your own, heres a guide http://www.doom2.net/doom2/mapediting.html and yes if you make the level yourself im sure its perfectly legal to play :)

Honis 06-13-2007 05:22 PM

I remember reading on a site that offers ROMS free to download,

Your allowed to keep the ROM for 24 hours and are then required to delete it if you do not own the original game. Something about demoing games.

I'm sure everyone who downloads from them deletes the ROMs on time...

I still commend the admins on nipping this in the butt before it could get out of control. I'd hate to see this place shut down, threatened to be shut down, or see mass bannings of users when the law started rolling around here.

jeff043 06-16-2007 11:15 AM

Nah, that 24-hour rule is a lie made by rom site owners to try and keep themselves out of trouble. You are not allowed to own roms even if you have the original game (although this never stops people from doing so:p )

I believe Gameboy Color is all that is supported, although I do not use Rockbox for playing Gameboy games.
To play, download the files, save them to your sansa, and select them in Rockbox. See also: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie.../PluginRockboy

You just earned yourself a permanent ban. Congrats. Let this be a lesson for all.
