Android 1.6 on the Creative Zii EGG [HD Video]

zii-android-main.jpg

Today Creative Zii Labs released the first Android firmware for the Creative Zii EGG based on Android version 1.6. The firmware is very beta and really only for the developers to start working on the OS for the Zii EGG. The basic Android applications are there but some things like the camera are still not working. Also, some elements of a phone are present such as 2G options and signal strength icon are still present, so Android still needs to be cleaned up and targeted to the specificly to the Zii EGG. Android marketplace was not available but I was able to download and install AndAppstore and successfully install applications from that app library.

Even though it is still very rough around the edges and far from a consumer ready device it is exciting to see progress. Still no word on when this device will launch for the consumer market, but don’t hold your breath since I would guess that date to be well into 2010 considering the current state of firmwares.

Below is a video demo of the Zii EGG Android in action.

Looks like an Ipod Touch with Android.
If someone hacks this and turns it into a phone it would be sooo cool.

Looks like this:

Has creative added DRM support to the Zii Egg Android ROM?

not sure on November 2, 2009 10:29 PM

a={a}. Can't wait .. any longer, it feels like signing a lease with a two night stand then waiting it out due to pride? Maybe some retail therapy (Droid) is in order until non-kinda sorta IT folks turn this into the greener grass that is anticipated to be on the other side. Granted there will be weeds to tend to but I really hope the 'final' version has an LED flash and user replaceable battery. Kudos Creative, if you were Viagra I'd be at the docs office, 'cause it's been longer than four hours.

If you've got any comments about how well AndAppStore works on the Zii feel free to let us know.

We're keen to support it so we'd welcome any tips or pointers as to how we can improve things for it.

I don't care about having Smart Phone. DATA plans rip off!

My ZenVisionW got stolen and I need replacement and waiting for this device and its not out yet.

What would be cool for me is have Zen Like UI MP3, support Podcast, download podcast via wifi, a2dp, GPS with built in map software(I buy the maps), and run Andriod Apps.

Android 1.6 firmware to capture it on video. They report this firmware is the first Android firmware to make it to the Zii EGG so it is very buggy and more of a proof of concept. You still have to give ZiiLabs major props for releasing Android 1.6 while other companies struggle to roll it out to their devices based on Android 1.5

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Samsung P3
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 was a success and the P3 is a very welcome and substantial update. Samsung has paid close attention to users on P2 issues and made great strides in addressing and improving most of them. The best feature of the P3 is its native video support. Most content you thow at it will playback without conversion on the great looking screen. Stop by the Samsung P3 forums for more details or check out our indepth P3 review.

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely.
