The Zune HD is Official

zune-hd-black.jpg

Not too long ago we saw leaked images of the next generation Zune- today Microsoft has spoken on the details. The Zune HD will sport a 480x272 OLED multi-touch screen with a web browser over wi-fi. We do know that the browser it up and running since Skipdeez lays claim to the first Tweet from the Zune HD.

It will embrace the HD badge with HD radio and 720p HDMI out with an optional dock. As far as features that is about all that has been said in the press release. We are still missing quite a few details such as capacities, pricing, games, additional features, ect. The official release is still fuzzy and is said to be “this fall”.

In addition to the new hardware there are a few details on how the Zune will play into Xbox. Next week at E3 we will have a chance to see how the Zune brand integrates into the Xbox Live.

I would say that according to the pictures and the website zunehd.net that there is a possibility for removable hard drives.

Minhquan Nguyen on May 26, 2009 11:46 PM

I am all for it if they've made the browsing and file organization a little more intuitive. I also think their software was somewhat buggy. And it would be great if they finally supported foreign characters--I could never read any of my Chinese, Korean, or Japanese music on the Zune I had...that was one of the major reasons I had to regretfully return it; it was a rather nice device.

Zhalfim on May 27, 2009 12:54 AM

is it still not available (easily anyway) outside of the states?

Austin on May 27, 2009 1:21 AM

its out in canada. can go to any store now and find it (sorta) DEVICE LOOKS AWSOME. IMA SOLD

The DarkSide on May 27, 2009 7:39 AM

Now this is a real reason for me to return my S9!!!! Wow, this device is gonna' take '09 by storm!!!!

sim on May 27, 2009 8:44 AM

im curious about the construction...

jkj1962 on May 27, 2009 9:25 AM

@Cody:

Please note that "zunehd.net" does not appear to be a Microsoft site, hence their disclaimer, "We are not associated in any way with Microsoft." The "HD" in their site name refers to "hard drives" not "high definition". They are simply a site that sells aftermarket hard drives that work with the Zune 80 & 120, nothing to do with a ZuneHD.

Wouldn't "personal service via email" be an oxymoron?

nimicitor on May 27, 2009 9:35 AM

I'm looking at the screws at the back and wondering why they haven't mentioned hard drive captivity.
Can you put your own drive in?

jkj1962 on May 27, 2009 12:01 PM

@nimicitor:

The supposition is that they are flash-based, with possible capacities of 8GB, 16GB or 32GB. This is aimed at competing with the iPod Touch.

Anybody else notice the "Model 1126" on the back in the photos? That's the model number of the Zune 80 I believe.

dave on May 27, 2009 12:07 PM

I like being able to plug-n-play any mp3 or mp4 player... I have having to install software to transfer mp3's

Jessica on May 27, 2009 12:50 PM

just saw on generationmp3 that it's only flash.

and if it has an EQ and something more interesting to offer over the sony.. (games and perhaps a better web browser and video experience) then hm...

however the new itouch will be out too so... I may cave and finally get an itouch.

Tario on May 27, 2009 12:56 PM

News is that it's only a 3.3 OLED screen. I'll pass, HD video on that tiny screen? What's the point?

http://gizmodo.com/5270945/zune-hd-is-real-has-multitouch-web-browsing-oled-screen-and-hd-video

Guess I'm still without a player at this point. & HD video with only 32GB of storage? Again, what's the point?

ballincolin on May 27, 2009 1:32 PM

I like the idea of HD radio in a Zune. @Tario 3.3 sounds huge to me, being a Fuze owner. But I realize that it really isn't that big.

Tario on May 27, 2009 1:47 PM

I realize that in your case this would be a step up, but I've used 4 & 4.3 inch screens for a while now, I just can't go back.

matt on May 27, 2009 2:45 PM

idk but i think just mabey the screws are just for show. and the zune hd may be compareable to the ipod touch for now, but when apple announces the new ipods in september, the ipod will still be better than the zune. just my thought tho

Zen on May 27, 2009 4:19 PM

@Zhalfim: if the rumors are true, the zuneHD will be the worldwide debut of the zune (ie it will be available outside the US)

H3O on May 27, 2009 6:37 PM

Not a pretty device, but that not what matters.

But after two years of neglecting Europe, I don't think MS is gonna pull a 180 turn. Europe is gonna be a market where they collect cash from their customers and then proceed to ignore them and their complaints.

The DarkSide on May 27, 2009 7:37 PM

Surprise surprise, I thought that "HD" Meant high def, I was wrong I see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hd_radio

Fallstar on May 27, 2009 9:42 PM

"The official release is still fuzzy and is said to be “this fall”."

According to Paul Thurrott's SuperSite, he has a ship date of September 5.

dragnandy on May 27, 2009 10:10 PM

so pretty....

Zhalfim on May 28, 2009 3:54 AM

@Zen - I'll believe it when I see it, the coming of the ZuneHD was more of a lock than seeing an international release (though congrats to Canada for apparently getting access to it finally)

Andy on May 28, 2009 11:18 PM

Even though it does look good, I cant help but thinking why you would need something this large (I'm assuming its bigger than most mp3 players) that just does music and video.
IMO you may as well get a smartphone to save pocket space and have a dedicated mp3 player for the gym etc.

M Cornea on June 3, 2009 9:27 PM

For the love of god, Microsoft, please do not make it necessary to use Zune software to transfer files. It is too tedious and annoying to have bloatware on my system when I could just boot up my Linux partition and drag-n-drop from any media player I choose.

We should start a petition and write to Microsoft about this.

Other than that, I'll hold out from buying the S9 for a little longer.

slym on June 29, 2009 5:46 AM

Microsoft Zune HD is already late to market, ipod and iphone have definitely early mover advantage. In this market apple have a very strong image while with old versions of Zune, Microsoft carries a bad image thus it will be really tough to penetrate through the market. Real success will lie in the price of product and value delivered at that price to the ultimate customer.

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Samsung P3
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 was a success and the P3 is a very welcome and substantial update. Samsung has paid close attention to users on P2 issues and made great strides in addressing and improving most of them. The best feature of the P3 is its native video support. Most content you thow at it will playback without conversion on the great looking screen. Stop by the Samsung P3 forums for more details or check out our indepth P3 review.

  • Microsoft Zune 120
    Samsung P2

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. You can check out the latest Zune 120 & 16 review or stop by our Zune forums for the latest.

  • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely.
