Noreve Archos 5 Leather Case Review

noreve-archos-5-main.jpg

Noreve is a maker of fine leather cases for all kinds of portable gadgets. Andreas had a chance to check out one of their cases for the Sony A820 and was very positive about it. This is actually my first experience with a Noreve case. I’m not such a fan of cases on my gadgets since I appreciate them more in the raw, but after checking out one of Noreve’s cases I might just change my tune- especially with larger devices like the Archos 5.

Read on for my thoughts and lots of great photos.

The Archos 5 slips snuggly in from the top. The inputs/outputs and buttons are all cut out and easy to access. There is never a need to take it out of the case unless you are using some of the more exotic attachments like the GPS or even the common DRV station. USB and cables will however connect easily though the bottom. Opening up the flap reveals the screen but also storage for your ID, credit cards, or cash- a very nice touch. On the back you will find a “kick stand” for propping up the player while watching videos. This stand is magnetic, so you don’t have to worry about it flapping around.

The leather itself is top notch, something that would blend well in a Coach store. Compared to other higher end leather products this case is reasonably priced. It sells for $50 and is available in black on Amazon. If you would like to select one 12 other colors you need to grab one directly from Noreve USA / Noreve. You can also get them in a rough-textured leather in three different colors for $10 more. To protect a $300+ PMP I do think it’s worth the investment.

Hmm, it actually doesn't look ugly, like those for the PSP. It also doesn't appear to add a lot of bulk, but personally, what's your opinion? I've been meaning to find cases that protect, aren't bulk, and still leave the player functional.

On that note, I take it that the screen itself doesn't have a protector, other than the closing cover?

Well, glad to see they have cases for Cowon, but I just hope they'll make a nice... curved case for the S9 asap.

Does the Archos use a HHD or Flash memory? I wouldn't want a magnet that close to my hard drive.

The Archos has HDD memory, up to 250 GB matter of fact. But don't worry, the Noreve cases (I have one for my Archos 605) uses a snapping type button to keep it closed. I'd definitely reccommend it.

But he said in the review that the kickstand is magnetic, not a snap.

Actually the Archos 5 only goes up to 250 GB where as the Archos 7 can go up to 320.

I just got one and am slightly annoyed by a single design fault. This is that when the kick stand is in place, there is no way of securing the front flap behind the unit so it doesn't remain in mid-air. I've tried securing it using the strap but this makes the fit too tight and it pulls in the stand so it doesn't stand up nicely.

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely.
