Zune 120 On The Horizon
Long Zheng over at IStartedSomething is reporting that the Zune 120 has passed the FCC’s radiation tests with flying colors. This is fantastic news since I get a sense that many users are looking for more capacity, especially in hard drive players. One of the reasons the Zune 80 is a staple in my gadget travelling ensemble is because I can sync my entire collection without having to make a decision on what I feel like listening to in the future. While I haven’t filled my 80 yet, I’m getting close.
One of my sources says the hard drive will be a Toshiba MK1231GAL- this is a 5mm drive so the Zune 120 be sized the same as the Zune 80. As far as price I would go agree with Long's estimated price of $300.
thanks Cruleworld

120 seems an odd size. You'd think they would have gone right for the 160 to compete with Apple.

Sounds OK, but there's still a 160GB iPod out there...
Of course, with an iPod you must select how much is for music and how much is like a portable drive.
Can the Zune do both without having to partition the drive?

You can't use the zune as an external HDD

This is great because a Zune was on my list of "wanted players" but I knew that the 80GB would be filled up after about a year, and i wanted something with a larger capacity higher than 80, but not an iPod, and hopefully it won't be as expensive as the Archos 605 wi-fi 160GB

You can use the zune as a portable drive if you use the zunesuite software. It allows you to copy files to your zune, like any other hard drive would. Works well actually, but you cant look at the files with your zune obviously.

radiation tests? what does that mean? will it have wi fi?

All the Zunes have WiFi.

Hey, another 40 gigs and they'll almost be competing with Apple.
I really hate Apple but this is just stupidity on Microsoft's part. Anyone who wants more than 80 Gigs is going to go for the 160GB iPod, especially at a similar price point. I know Microsoft is completely oblivious to what consumers want most of the time, but this is just stupid.

I originally thought I would miss not being able to use my Zune as a hard drive, but with very small high capacity flash drives, I don't. Besides, I would have to carry around my USB sync cable. Better to use a small portable hard drive for those purposes.

I'm also puzzled by this. Anyone wanting to go larger than an 80gb dap will, for the same price, go for the higher capacity 160gb ipod. What is Microsoft thinking? ARE they thinking?
Further, I've read rumors on sites that the 80gb ipod is being discontinued and the 160 will drop in price to the $250 range. This along with the new Archos players and a rumoured 64gb flash touch and the Zune 120 already looks dated, and it hasn't even been released for sale yet.
