Cowon P5 Gets Official

p5.jpg

The Cowon Q5(W) has been the flagship of all MP3 players for a while, offering and costing more than anything else out there. The successor is now official, and will be called the P5.

The P5 will of course have an impressive feature list, which includes (draws breath): 5" 800x480 pixel LCD haptic touch screen, FM tuner, TV output, speaker, Bluetooth, USB host, games, DMB-T TV tuner (US version will definitely not have this) and optional Wifi module. It will come in 40, 60 and 80GB versions running a 700mhz CPU and a Windows CE 5.0 core. While 14 hours for audio isn't very impressive, the stated 9 hours for video certainly is and the device supports pretty much any audio and video format there is. If and when a US version will come out is unknown, but expect it to be priced like it's predecessor, meaning it won't be cheap. For more pictures and full tech specs check out the product page.

WOW! Successor to the Q5 and looks like a big improvement too! The design is flawless. I am definitely picking one up in the coming future. (Need to save cash from now on haha)

Ok, why are they still using WinCE 5.0? 6.0 has been out for awhile now... Is it a more demanding OS that the device can't handle? So far the only drawback I can see...

Ummmm, and the D3 will be available when? Amazing how they update a failure so soon, but don't follow up their winner with such a thing. And now I'm not really feeling so bad about jumping ship and hitting up an A829.

perhaps win 5 is less buggy than 6 like how xp is compared to vista.

ABI please get a review on this as soon as you possibly can. id like to see some reviews before i make my decision on my next PMP.

I was excited until I read that it uses Windows CE 5.0.

Shorty15c4 on July 23, 2008 4:37 PM

Wow. 40 GB? And look at all those features! Double than what my current player has. Ironically, its a P2. This player definatly deserves the name P5 :D. Hopefully its under $300. Wow, definately a computer.

i want this!!!!!!!!!!

chefgon on July 23, 2008 8:30 PM

You guys are thinking of Windows Mobile, not Windows CE. Windows Mobile (currently version 6) is a separate product built on top of the Windows CE core (currently version 5).

Windows CE itself is actually a pretty stable and well designed embedded OS. Don't let bad experiences with Windows Mobile sour your opinion of CE, they are not the same thing.

Jay on July 23, 2008 9:55 PM

thanks for clearing that up chefgon! So it is using the most up to date OS...

Now this device is right on the money.

darkassasin849 on July 23, 2008 11:50 PM

i might have to sell my archos 504 and dvr station to save money for this if its as good as it seems

Hmm, I see a red flash icon on the desktop on one of the pics on the product page. The red icon always means Flash editor, the silver one means flash player. Does this mean you can actually run Flash on it? If so, it's a must buy for me!

Too freakin' big... not exactly portable.
Any news about a D2 sucessor?

Finally a Cowon I can look at without puking. Maybe I'll buy this, although 14 hours of audio isn't good enough (and a bit weird coming from Cowon)

Typical, I've just bought the Q5 plus spare charger, protective films, leather and hard plastic case etc and now the P5 is coming. If I knew this I would have waited. Shame wi-fi is not built in like it is on the Q5. Does'nt make sense to me.
Wife, you're getting a Q5 soon!!

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Samsung P3
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 was a success and the P3 is a very welcome and substantial update. Samsung has paid close attention to users on P2 issues and made great strides in addressing and improving most of them. The best feature of the P3 is its native video support. Most content you thow at it will playback without conversion on the great looking screen. Stop by the Samsung P3 forums for more details or check out our indepth P3 review.

  • Microsoft Zune 120
    Samsung P2

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely.
