Good article but it only confirms 1 thing - with all the good choices coming available as of late will this just add to the confusion? And , even though MS is trying to stay competitive, will they FINALLY give the features and battery life consumers has come to expect from their devices? Custom EQ, 30-40 steps to keep volume more precise, a simple CLOCK!!! well, here's to wishful thinking. They ARE heading in the right direction - the inception of games and the 2.5 update prove it.

@nywytboy68: Well, it's sad to say, but every time I think of buying a successor to my Sony NW-HD5 (I have been doing this for almost a year) and start browsing the internet "what has the market got for me today?" I alway have to find out that there are sadly few devices over, say, 80 GB (while having a reasonable size and price); because it needs HDD, not flash. Even Creative abandoned HDD so what's left? The Zune 80 and the iPod Classic (and some big and expensive Archos bricks I don't feel to care about). And iPod has double the size. My point is: not only marketing makes iPod that successful... unbelivably they also seem to know better what the customers need.

(I mean, don't get me wrong, not every iPod product "knows better" what the customers need, but Apple strangely manages to meet some demands no other company does)

I'm making the point that MS has a unique UI and that there are OTHER players out there, that Apple is not the only product on the market, that MS doesn't NEED to rip off the ipod interface (which, is actually OWNED by Creative ;-0). If you believe yourself that they know what the customers "NEED" then why did you stoop so low to have purchased a Sony product? It IS inferior, is it not? since it's not an ipod, and they DO know better, why did you not succumb to the all knowing and ALL SEEING Apple?

@nywytboy68: I'm sorry if you felt my comment a retort, I didn't want to be insulting nor did I want to praise Apple or anything. You are right, I bought a Sony product back then, and I still like it: it has very good sound quality and battery life, it's compact and blah blah blah AND it's capacity is 20GB! Even iPods didn't have much more back then (there was a 40GB version, but it was very expensive, to my recollection).

But that's exactly what I'm talking about: I wanted an MP3 player, I had certain needs, and I there were plenty of players to choose from. In 2008, 3 years later, I want an MP3 player, I have certain needs AND I have to choose from Zune and iPod... now why don't the other companies "dare" to release their HDD players too (especially Creative with such a great - but sadly old - player like the Vision:M), that's a big misery for me. I didn't mean to say any of the players I mentioned are better or worse -- I obviously have several reasons to not want to buy an iPod (I don't like it's UI, for example =)), but I didn't want to talk about that -- only about the choice itself. I wanted to comment on the current product palette: that's one thing that Apple done right.

wow a zune touch huh sounds great but it copies Apple by far lol. how about something Apple doesnt have now that would be even better. well it sounds like a great idea and all and would make zune a little better considerning the zune 30 isnt really muck. i own one and there ok i wish i would have gotten a zune 80 for the touch pad cus clicking buttons sucks lol but its all good. hope this works out. also when is this ganna happen??? keep us zune holders updated. also the zune 30 originals need more stuff not much you can do with them ya know lol thx peace.

I'd love to see a Zune product do something outside the iPod Touch specs. Maybe a hard drive based player... I'm not sure but I am sure that simply rehashing the iPod models will not move the brand ahead.

This looks pretty cool...but to the people wondering if its HD or flash...i highly doubt they could fit a hard drive into a player that thin...i could be wrong but i'm just saying...

I can hardly see MS making the same mistake that Apple made with the ipod (I hate saying that name) "Touch. The thing is obviously a movie player why did they not make it with the memory needed to hold movies. It was hardly big enough to hold ones music collection. I don't expect the Zune "Touch" to be made w/o a hard drive version... they may make a flash but I'd like to say that they will not. It is designed with the screen in mind and thus encourages it's use as a movie device. It should have the capacity to hold more than 10 movies (unlike its competitor).

*movies are assumed to be 2 hour films encoded such that they look good but are not bloated.

They themselves don't make and do not have any plans to make a phone, but this doesn't mean someone can't make the phone for them. Apple does not "make" the iphone.

I bought a Toshiba Gigabeat S60 about 18 months ago, which is basically the Zune 30 minus Wifi and MS branding, a 60GB hard drive and cheaper, and I'm still happy with it, but I find myself drooling over the new Zunes every time I see them.
It's just unbelievable how smooth that interface is - Out of the players I've seen, only the iPods come close, but then they don't have the tactile buttons for when you need them. And the Zune Originals are just amazing...

Anyway, if they did make an HDD-based Zune "touch" (that's very likely not what they're gonna call it if they have any sense), honestly, I'd be all over it.
But I wouldn't really hold my breath for any kind of web browser unless they somehow manage to tie in Opera. I mean, have you tried using IE mobile?

Anyway I just picked up the 120gb zune and love it a big up from the 80, for the SAME Price too- actually exchanged my 80 which I was loving at best buy cause I got a prp when i got my 80 last summer so win win for sure. I've used ipod and after using my zune I'm not going back.

Well, something better than just a touch-screen would be to implement it along the current pad and buttons of the Zune. We all know some people, including myself, would hate a complete touch-screen device.

well it sounds amazing! this year i couldn't decide between the 130 zune and the itouch, and this sounds like a perfect solution (if it is infact true). my problem was the zune had radio more memory,the zune pass option, and less expensive... but the itouch had a larger screen, has more usefull applications, probably has more music options... and just looked nicer. I pretty much gave up on the decision, but if this is true it seems like the perfect option!

Ya a touch zune would be sweet, but am I the only one who thinks products such as the ipod touch is straying way to far away from a basic "mp3 player" idea? I mean yes zune has to keep up and compete with apple since that is their goal, but I think if Zune kept their players how they were and just kept adding new functions in the new software pakages, zune would overcome apple by a long shot. How i see it is that why should zune make a touch mp3 player, in which to compete with apple, when zune has the ideas and technology to beat apple with basic software updates to their current players.I think downloadable games and music right to your mp3 player is a good idea, but whats the point of an internet browser on an mp3 player when you can go to your computer and do the same thing with better quality and function. Call me old fashioned, but i think zune is right where it wants to be and will continue to make changes to their software without having to build whole new models like ipod.

dude...have you played with an ipod touch? there amazing! and apple is amazing for making it . therefore if msoft made a touch zune everyone would buy one and then everyone will have a zune and ipods will DIE.

They need to make this more like a pda. Let it run Windows Mobile and run the zune software on top of that. That way it could use that fancy hardware for things other than just playing music.

its rediculous hearing these kids saying ipods are good when thats the only thing theyve owned. i had 3 80gb ipods in one year (thank god for best buy giving me that shitty ass plan that helped me 1 out of the three) before i went with a new 80gb zune and still the zune is the best thing technologically i have bought. i know two apple store managers that have zunes, and most people have said that if you like accessories=ipod, you want a great mp3 player and risk accessories = zune. and apple really hasnt come out with anything good. and the iphone! what a p.o.s. the only good thing was the macbook pro, but thats $3000. i have dropped my zune on pavement, snow, and water. turns right on. microsoft kicks ass, and i will be getting one of these :). apple kids....come out of your little ipod world, i finally did lol

In case you iPlotters don't know, Apple did not invent the touch screen. Sorry to blow your egos. PDA's using Windows Moble have been out for some time now. Eventhough they used a stylist many times I just use my finger. As far as a Zune Phone is conserned...I have a HTC Windows Smartphone. It has 2Gb storage (I could up it to 8Gb). I have music, podcast, video and photos on it. I also have a bluetooth headset that I use listen to music with. MicroSoft is right not to comeout with a "Zune" phone. They already exist.

I think they both have ups and downs. Apple obviously wins the size comp, However Zune wins the space competitions. Apple for efficiency, and i say this because my Zune never plays a song completely with out freezing. This might even the odds(if it is actually that cool).

I don't know. I am a hardcore Zune fan. I would love to have a touchscreen Zune. I actually really like touchscreens (if they work well, which all new ones seem to do), and I'm used to using the one on my phone. I've got an 80g Zune. My boyfriend actually just got a failTouch (I thought about breaking up with him). But the thing is, if Zune sacrifices storage for features, I'm going to be horribly upset. I know the failTouch only holds like 8g or something. I can't deal with that, I have FAR more than that on my Zune.

This will only be worth the buy if they change the menu screen. There's no point in getting it if it is the exact same as a normal 120gb soon but just touch. What i am trying to say is that they should change the menu style around or how you view the menu. Cause if they do not change a thing, it will be like having a normal zune but you get to touch it instead.

Thank God. It's about time Microsoft gives Apple some real competition. I will have this the day it is released. And show all the iTouch users that my new toy is cooler than theirs. Then I wonder how long it'll be before Apple comes out with a holographic iTouch with - wait for it - a built in microwave. Seriously, will it ever end?

So when does it come out, and what features does it have? I own a second generation ipod touch, and apple's starting to piss me off (i.e. trying to get me to pay $10 for a firmware upgrade, when iphone owners get it free). I'm going to sell my itouch and either get this or the new psp that comes out this fall. I'd like the zune touchscreen to have an internet browser, play videos, music (obviously lol), and have games on it, like the ipod i own now does.

This is a complete copy of the iPod Touch. If you say "So what about apple," well, without apple, you guys wouldn't have had any of your Zunes you love so much. Zune is a complete copy of just about every product apple made. iPods have much better quality, looks, and overall performance. I would definately recommend iPods over Zunes. The people down at apple invented excellent music players, and no way will Zune win the competition.
