Microsoft Brings Games to the Zune

joystiq-gdc.jpg

Looks like one of my "8 things I don't want on the Zune" can be crossed off. I can't say that I'm excited about this since I have been quite adamant about keeping the Zune as a music centric device but I will have to see how it plays out when released. My previous opinion may be swayed.

Update: Cesar from Zune Insider stresses that the Zune's primary focus will still be wireless music and video playback. That makes me feel a little better.

Microsoft has announced at the Game Developer's Conference that developers will be able to target the Zune as a gaming platform. It could be cool in that home brew games will run rampant making an interesting community. The controls may be unfriendly to a gaming platform but it is interesting that there is a multi-player wireless aspect on the table.

More info to come when I get my hands on the official press release..

I don't think I'll ever use the feature, beyond trying it out to see what it's like, but I don't really have a problem with it. Potentially it could distract development from other issues they could improve, that's the only worry, but it does at least show that they aren't standing still, hopefully they have energy invested in improved the Zune software as well (Divx/Xvid would be nice too).

I think its actually pretty cool. Now if they could get an eq on the hardware (claims of not being supported on the 80 are bull, its just a feature they removed & made me return my Zune80) and take care of the software I'd buy 1 back NOW and skip the Sony I'll have my wife KILL me over. Then again,............ if sony upped it to min 32gb like I'm hoping for the future!!! Hmmmmmmmmmmmm,........................ sorry about going off topic.

I agree on the Divx/xvid thing in the future. Microsoft blessed the xbox360 and I am still happy and impressed. Some decent games would indeed move units. The Zune's menu system is dead-on usable and their entire product line has WiFi. They can evolve.

I only considered getting one when i heard they were adding this. It will become cluttered and most likely not practical, but I still( for some reason) want to see a web browser on the Zune...

  • Samsung P2
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 has been gaining quite a following lately and rightfully so. If you are looking for something well designed, innovative, and feature packed; you should look into this full touch screen wonder. The Bluetooth feature set is what I find to be the most intriguing, with the ability to tether to your phone to make calls or wirelessly transfer with no restrictions to other P2s. Check out the review or stop by our ever growing P2 forums to get the latest info.

  • Toshiba Gigabeat T400
    toshiba gigabeat t400

The Gigabeat T400 is without a doubt my favorite flash player at the moment. It does have one major setback in that it only comes in a 4GB, shame on you Toshiba. What makes me love this player is it's ultra slick sexy design, very easy- just pick up and use interface, and killer sound quality that would make Cowon users envious. This player is a must buy for anyone who sports a premium set of headphones. Full review to come but you should really just buy one.

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • JAYS q-JAYS
    JAYS q-JAYS

The q-JAYS are great in ear phones. They offer excellent clarity, silky treble, realistic midrange, and a nice bass response. They're comfortable, incredibly tiny, and come with a huge selection of accessories. While they certainly are analytic phones, they're still fun to listen to. The q-JAYS respond well to EQing, and can be tweaked to fit almost anyone's sound preference. Recommended for anyone owning a good sounding player and well encoded audio files. Check out our review.
