Reminder: The Samsung P2 Still Pwns

samsung-p2-pwns.jpg

When I went to CES I carried a bag filled with the latest MP3 players. At various dinners and events I would pull out this magical bag of MP3 players for show and tell. It is one thing to read users’ reactions to MP3 player, but to be able to put one in their hands is when you really get quality feedback. Out of all the players the one that never ceased to impress was the P2, especially when I showed them how I could dial their phone without my Treo in sight.

I like all of them, am still impressed (review) and even more so with the second firmware updated dubbed “BlueWave 2” which adds improved functionality, features, and games. It’s not over yet, there is still a BlueWave 3 on Samsung’s roadmap. Even though the firmware is “unfinished” it is still extremely stable, much like how Microsoft handles the Zune firmware updates- adding stable updates on top of stable firmwares.

We have a growing P2 community, so if you would like to get real consumer feedback, hacks, and latest info on the BlueWave updates; check out our very helpful Samsung P2 forum. Also compare the P2 to the Touch, it can definitely hold its own.

I just wanted to give you a heads up. I was comparing the Zune 80 to the p2 and noticed that under USB connection you put "Standard USB" for Zune when it's actually propriety.

And for the p2 you put propriety, I don't know if that's right though.

i killed an ipod and am proud of it on February 1, 2008 5:44 AM

the P2 owns.....
infact i did a whole report on the p2 for my computer core skills assignment at university.....
its just awesome...

Doesn't "own" for me:

- No support for Ogg Vorbis
- MTP only, no MSC/UMS
- LCD when OLED looks so much better (and saves battery)

Lex on February 1, 2008 2:12 PM

Too bad it still uses primarly touch controls. Sad to see that Samsung is moving in that direction and it's the reason why I won't buy their players for a long while now.

"...“BlueWave 2” witch ads improved functionality..."

Hey, I love your website and articles, but I was somewhat dismayed by that part of the sentence. I don't know if you have some weird spell-checker, but you ought to change the phrase. "Witch" ought to be "which," and "ads" ought to be "adds." Not trying to be a grammar freak, but there are certain things that just ruin the professional image of an article.

spikeless on February 1, 2008 5:17 PM

Scott R - you are misinformed.
- The P2 supports Ogg just fine, as well as aac and of course mp3.
- It also supports both MTP and UMS, just choose the correct firmware (check the abi forums for details).
- OLED may be the best tech but the P2 screen is simply stunning (much better that the iPod touch LCD) and the battery life is a very respectable 30 hours.

Check your facts before bagging a device you obviously don't even own.

EnzoTen (Grahm) on February 1, 2008 11:15 PM

@ScottR - OLED do not look better, trust me. They dont display colors correctly. The AMOLED looks stunning (like on the Clix2) but still does not look correct as far as color.

@Lite - thanks i fixed it. I know it looks bad but I have not editor and im dyslexic. so no matter how many times i read it i wont see the mistakes. I just try to do my best with it. =)

nywytboy68 on February 2, 2008 6:10 AM

Hey Enzo, keep up the good work! I have a D2 and would get this IF they up the capacity to AT LEAST 16gb (I know,......... It's coming) but I really need a min of 32gb. Damn, and this is SOOOOOOOOOO sweet. But I do have 1 question. I have a Sony nwz-s618 and it's the best sounding player I own (better than my 8gb D2 - bought it even though it's only 8gb - DAMN IT!!!). If I get this will I notice a big difference in sound quality? The sony is why I started looking for better sounding players in the first place. Sorry I've gone off topic.

nywytboy68

The sony you have has better sound than the P2 or thats my opinion. i have the nwz-a816, i had a P2 before but i returned it to the store and swapped it for the sony never been happier =D

nywytboy68 on February 3, 2008 7:52 AM

Kinda' figured. Thanks for saving me the trouble, now I just can't wait for Sony to release their new walkman in the next quarter (I hope).

Doesn't "own" for me:

- No support for Ogg Vorbis
- MTP only, no MSC/UMS
- LCD when OLED looks so much better

add this to the list

-no wifi
-no third party app support like ipod touch (not that i have one)
-no full html browser like safari

this takes a back seat to ipod touch, ipod touch is still the best touch/flash mp3 player because of features

NoComp on February 6, 2008 10:12 AM

@Sahil:
And my DAP makes some good Espresso as well, but unfortunately it sounds like crap.
Hey, wait a moment!
What is the purpose of a digital "AUDIO" Player in the first place?

Well, I listened to some songs on the SAMSUNG P2 and the iPod Touch with some good IEM's recently and the iPod Touch sounds like a 20$ mp3-Player - even worse than all the other iPods.
Generationmp3 thinks the same btw and they`re not anti-iPod at all (Samsung P2 is among the best sounding DAP's here):

to bad for the ipod touch that the sound sux :/

mudkips on February 6, 2008 8:15 PM

Yeah this mp3 player owns! The only problem is that the software sucks almost as much as windows media player or I-Tunes, You can't do fuck-all in it. And for some reason I cant open the mp3 player memory as a mass storage device on x64 even though the software can open it...

spikeless on February 10, 2008 5:03 PM

@Sahil:
As previously mentioned, the P2 does support Ogg and UMS and and there seems to be some opinion that OLED does NOT look better. The P2 screen really is beautiful.

As far as WiFi goes - this is completely pointless unless you live in an area with municipal WiFi, which 99.9% of the world do not. Ditto for the browser - no municipal WiFi, no point.

I will concede the third part app support though. It would be nice to be able to brew up some apps for the P2 but I can live without it.

Last thing to remember - the P2 is a lot cheaper that the touch.

@mudkips:
The software really does suck... I use MediaMonkey, much much better.

mudkips on February 17, 2008 11:42 PM

Thanks Spikeless, I hope that works on 64-bit. I will try it out and let you guys know.

mudkips on February 17, 2008 11:47 PM

Also, does anyone know how to get rid of the one second delay between songs? It kind of ruins albums like Fortress by Protest The Hero :S

EEain on February 19, 2008 1:29 AM

I was excited about this until I saw the UI walkthoughs on youtube and saw how clunky and slow it was. (reminds or trying to type on my garmin) Does it have a pressure sensitive screen?

I am totally antipod but after using the touch damn does it do soo much right. The UI and construction are perfect.

Why samsung? why toshiba? why sandisk?

Sams Club the touch (updated) is $230

@EEain:
The UI could be a little finicky in the first release but subsequent firmware releases have improved the responsiveness and gestures immensely. I certainly would not call it clunky now.

Where might the S5 review be on these boards?

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Samsung P3
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 was a success and the P3 is a very welcome and substantial update. Samsung has paid close attention to users on P2 issues and made great strides in addressing and improving most of them. The best feature of the P3 is its native video support. Most content you thow at it will playback without conversion on the great looking screen. Stop by the Samsung P3 forums for more details or check out our indepth P3 review.

  • Microsoft Zune 120
    Samsung P2

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. You can check out the latest Zune 120 & 16 review or stop by our Zune forums for the latest.

  • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely. Check out our review.
