SanDisk’s View of the PMP Market?

In January SanDisk introduced their first PMP, the Sansa View, which was expected to be released in the first quarter of this year along with the Express and the Connect. The View’s 4” screen, 8GB of memory, decent codec support, and full-sized SD slot all for $300 looked to create a valid position for the player in the video market.

Five months later, a SanDisk representative declares that a review of the View will push its arrival into 2008 as “the market is changing fast and furious and we want to shift our efforts to develop a PMP that will meet the needs of the market versus pushing out the wrong product. So we're taking another look.”

Primarily being a flash memory supplier, and the world’s largest at that, SanDisk will have an immense vigilance of the sensitivity that the internal and expansion memories will bring to the product. Perhaps SanDisk is simply waiting the year out, not wanting to become one of the many companies to rush into the portable video market at the present time and risk their product being overlooked. Least of all, they will avoid sacrificing the ergonomic value of the View by implementing a noticeable feature merely to draw attention in the overcrowded market.

Although it is never enjoyable to wait for a product to be released, we can be glad that when the Sansa View finally hits the shelves next year, we are more likely to see a product that has reached its potential.

I believe SanDisk will come out with a great product sooner or later. There has definetly been a rapid change in MP3/4 technology and therefore, can't wait for the added features other branded players and SanDisk are going to introduce.

man, this sucks... I was really looking forward to buying this... Oh well, i'll just buy the Creative Zen Vision W instead...

great, another disapointment. sandisk should have not show the product at CES. Now, I am pissed off at Sandisk for hyping me up and then slapping with a new saying, "You will have to wait until 2008." What are they freaking serious? Around 2008, IPOD Video will be taking over. I think it is better to release right now to compete with the current version of IPOD Video, Zen etc...

    The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it.     The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice.     JAYS q-JAYS

    The q-JAYS are great in ear phones. They offer excellent clarity, silky treble, realistic midrange, and a nice bass response. They're comfortable, incredibly tiny, and come with a huge selection of accessories. While they certainly are analytic phones, they're still fun to listen to. The q-JAYS respond well to EQing, and can be tweaked to fit almost anyone's sound preference. Recommended for anyone owning a good sounding player and well encoded audio files. Check out our review.
