Sony NW-E013 / E015 Simple 1GB and 2GB Flash Players

sony-nw-e015.jpg

Sony is bringing another stick-like player to their lineup in 1GB and 2GB sizes. With a built-in USB plug, the player follows the typical minimalistic approach of the stick form factor with a 3-line OLED screen that disappears when off. The player supports Sony’s ATRAC format as well as MP3s natively. Unfortunately, you are probably still stuck with using SonicStage to get music onto the player.

The player is appearing on all of Sony’s European websites, but has yet to appear on their US site. It will probably make it to the states; just give it a an extra month or so.

I though it doesnt have screen but it has it.

But it still sucks becuz it still uses ATRAC.

Deso on March 2, 2007 6:09 AM

Previous versions of sonicstage do suck

Nowadays you can use connect software, very small program that enables drag & drop on the player in MP3 format so problem solved.

Tom on March 2, 2007 9:46 AM

It supports more than ATRAC including AAC, MP3 and WMA.

Man today, most gadget site writers are all biased.
Latest version of SonicStage is pretty good supporting most music formats: AAC, MP3, WMA, PCM, ATRAC Lossless without converting.

I just bought a sony nw-e505. I've been trying to *use* it for days and SS just does not work! MP3FM from sony doesn't work either. many podcasts can't be converted or listen on the player.

I mean, this e505 is the most gorgeous flash-based mp3 player (besides the newer NW-SXXX series) out there but do I need another useless gadget around?!

SS can't convert any mp4 in other frequency beside 44Hz. can't convert aac, etc etc... and I'm using the latest 4.3 with vista support.

Oh i didnt read that...it includes other format...

Reo on March 2, 2007 11:19 PM

Yep, it has been more many years since Sony supporting other formats.
Current DAPs from Sony supports MP3, AAC, WMA, PCM, ATRAC lossless without converting to ATRAC.

Also, latest SonicStage gives you option not to put DRM when importing songs (default is no DRM on songs).

If I buy a player, I want it to NOT be software dependant.
Doesn't matter if its SonicStage, iTunes or whatever else for that matter!

Having the freedom to put anything on there (not just music) take it with me where ever I may go, whack it into a mate's computer and go from there.

Along with not having to be dependant on the Micro$oft Window$ operating system too!

ATRAC sound doesn't suck. I use it more often than MP3 or AAC on my Sony NW-E002 player.

Sonic Stage is a very good program, it just takes a little understanding of how it works... i've over 130GB (yes 130GB) of ripped CD's, MP3s etc and it really works well. u can put any walkman on the pc and sonic stage lets u copy over no problem. Also, Sonic Stage is great for use as a juke box, much better than itunes as i can have all my CD front covers listed on the HDTV and select from the comfort of my couch!
As for the ATRAC3 format, it's really spot on, i have ripped most CDs in 320Kbps and most MP3s are at least 192Kbps (with the odd exception), both sonic stage via the computer and the various walkmans i've used always make the sound quality good - acceptable even at lower bit rates, (personally i try to have the best quality all the time).
Give Sonic Stage a chance and try learn it, it is good.
Another good thing about these new music formats (AAC & ATRAC) is that they dont leave great holes in between tracks, 99% of music is non-stop listening with no track breaks, unfortuantely with MP3's, unless u have one huge track, you get skips between them. Not so with ATRAC and others.
i guess if you're a mac user you can't use sonic stage, but i guess you wouldnt find a mac user without an ipod now, would you?!

Dare to be different with the Walkman, people are like sheep and ipod is at the front of the herd.

Hi, just wondering, what program is it that allows you to drag & drop. I have the NW-S705F, i'm using Sonic Stage but it uploads all my trax and I can't select whole folders manually, the trax are therefore all over the place and not in wonderfully useful folders. Help!

MacUser on November 15, 2007 6:21 AM

I've just searched the net and it appear that SonicStage CP 4.0 (on the japenese website) is available to download...i'll try that out now...but this is what I thought in general...

Just as a comment - I have brought this MP3 player from Sony but I'm also a recent Mac user - finding that Sonic Stage is not compatible with the Mac (along with other software) is a pain since I want to use my products on a Mac (including my MD player and voice recorder) - but it seems that Window's has a monopoly on the Market. I'm considering returning it since I can't find an alternative.
Therefore, the only reason Mac users have the ipod is because it is Mac and Windows compatible.

It's so annoying that MP manufaturers force us to use their own software instead of using accepted standards... If I'm not able to access my player on Linux, or at work, or during a holiday, then it's useless to me.

Hang in there MacUser! You will definitely find proper UMS MP3 players. They probably won't look as good as those Sony cuties though...

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Samsung P3
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 was a success and the P3 is a very welcome and substantial update. Samsung has paid close attention to users on P2 issues and made great strides in addressing and improving most of them. The best feature of the P3 is its native video support. Most content you thow at it will playback without conversion on the great looking screen. Stop by the Samsung P3 forums for more details or check out our indepth P3 review.

  • Microsoft Zune 120
    Samsung P2

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely.
