Creative Slims Down 60GB Zen Vision:M and Vision W

vision-m-sd.jpg

Creative's Zen Vision:M DAP and Vision W PMP have always been one of the chubbier players on the market. And up until now, we always thought Creative liked them that way. You know, more player to love, that kind of stuff. Well, it turns out that the company has fallen prey to the "thin is in" mentality and put the M and W on a rigorous diet and exercise regimen. It worked, too, because both 60GB players have shed 15% of their bulk!

Available in late March, the "slim model" 60GB Zen Vision:M is now 0.75" thick (down from 0.87"); the Zen Vision W, now 0.87" (down from 1.04"). Prices in Japan are set at about $295 and $380, basically the same as current models, so it looks like keeping up with the skinny Joneses won't come at a price.

what a waste, how about better batterylife or more codecs those are more important.

saminthehat on March 12, 2007 12:23 PM

Even MORE codecs?

Utew on March 12, 2007 4:34 PM

Agreed, roger767,

AC3, H.264, Ogg Vorbis, AAC.. all would have been welcomed updates..

Tack on a better viewing angle LCD and a couple of new color combinations and crown it as new player. The slimmer HD is nice, but Creative missed the boat in making this a relatively cheap (to accomplish) revision, with some substance... I would have jumped for a revised model..

Atrax on March 12, 2007 4:36 PM

Wouldn't this sacrifice battery life?

james on March 12, 2007 7:46 PM

it better not sacrifice battery life... I'm looking to buy a "slim version" Vision:M 60GB.. the slim is nice... this means that the new slim 60GB will be thinner than the current 30GB model at .79" thick.

markuz on March 19, 2007 9:27 AM

i am looking to buy ZVM and this is great news to me i am planing to buy the 60gb version though. so i guess i might be paying aout 300$ on net.

i want to know if 60gb will be on diet or not?

is so today is march 19th.. i can wait 10 more days and when its really out i can cop it..

i hate ipods. ;)

Zephkiel on March 19, 2007 6:58 PM

This is great and all, but is this coming to America?

Dave on March 28, 2007 9:18 PM

Only for the 60 GB models? :[

iwantone_soooooooooooon on March 29, 2007 6:21 PM

How did u get to know that? I've tried to get the insider info of the release date in the US from the forum admins and mods on Creative and they didn't leak a hair line info saying its confidential.
Freaking shchiiiit ..... i've been waiting for ever on this just for the 0.2" less of a brick.
Creative .... pls ship 'em out soooooooooooon.

F on April 5, 2007 3:54 AM

I know the slim model is out in Japan, but is it available in the rest of the world? (Europe? America? Asia?)

Chad on April 6, 2007 12:53 PM

If you look on the US Creative site, the dimensions are the same for the 30GB and 60GB models. I don't know if that's a clue to whether they are coming out with the slimmer model soon, or what? As of right now, I don't think anyone has a clue, but I'm waiting to buy a 60GB slim model (don't know how long that's going to take).

Simon on April 7, 2007 2:35 PM

Had the Zen Micro, then the Zen Vision:M 30. Loved them both. Had thought about the 60 when it came out, but the increased size turned me off. Now someone has stolen the 30 right off my desk at work! HAVE to replace it, so it looks like a 60 for me ... as soon as I can find that slimmer model!

Eivind on April 10, 2007 3:42 PM

But the question is; does anyone know if Creative will come with a new slimmer 30 gb version. Because I just bought the 30 gb version.

Simon on April 11, 2007 12:03 PM

I contacted Creative Labs regarding a release date for the slimmer Zen Vision m: 60 in the U.S., and this was the response I received this morning:

"I would first just like to thank you fro contacting us here at Creative Labs. We have not yet heard as to if we will be selling the Slim version of the Creative Zen Vision:M. We truly apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."

This did not fill me with confidence.

Joe on April 12, 2007 12:37 AM

I guess Creative is playing its Marketing tricks to sell out old players first. The slimmer versions are already being sold in Japan as I see on the Japanese website and painstakingly translated using babelfish.
I'd hate the bastards 4 ever if they betray us in the US. Its already long due I had one and I'm sick of checking all the websites for more info.

Selling the ZenMicro 6GB at $99 instead of $199 etc.

Simon on April 14, 2007 4:12 AM

I agree with you completely. I am already disgusted enough that all the new accessories Creative is making are first for the iPod, and then maybe someday for their own products. I have been browsing website after website trying to find the slimmer 60, but worried that even when its released there will be confusion when buying one online -- are they selling you the "new" Zen Vision M: 60 or when it arrives will you find its the fatter one. I have even been tempted to buy one of the Zen Micro's just to get me by until something new comes out on the market!

Phil on April 16, 2007 8:42 PM

Shoot .... sorry to vent out here ........ I'm hating myself for looking up websites like this for ever and ever (every freaking day since the initial news broke out). I'm finally on the verge of giving up and go buy the "fat bastard" as Creative is likely to elude the slimmer version from US and stick with selling them in Japan being a Singaporean company. Not taking sides but its mysterious why its already released in Japan and being tight-lipped about even the talk of it in other countries. Is US sales not the major factor Creative is still #2 behind Ipod??????????
All I wanted was a good player. Let it be .15" thick.

Simon on April 19, 2007 1:14 AM

Gave up. Bought the Archos 604. Still very nervous about it, it should arrive on Friday. I loved my Zen (and so must whoever stole it off my desk at work), but once I started looking for what to buy to replace the stolen M:30, I got discouraged with the slimmer M:60 not being available in the US, and the new x-fi stuff being released for iPod -- shudder!

Lindsey on April 30, 2007 7:26 AM

Reply i received a couple of weeks ago:-

>

This implies they will be coming to the US/UK eventually, although not sure if I can wait that long... :-/

sam on June 2, 2007 12:09 AM

hey guys if u wanted you could check it out on ebay. some "online stores" based in singapore would sell it. i just flew back in for the summer and they just released the slim one here. they made sure the stocks for the fat one ran out first though. cause i was trying to buy one and everywhere i went it was out of stock. waited a week and suddenly its all about the new slim version. cool stuff.

latino dude on June 12, 2007 8:36 AM

sam

How much slimmer is the new one, I'm working in the middle east and buy most of my things on-lin and therefore don't get the privilege to see latest electronics first hand. I haven't seen the 30gb either so I can't compare

Does anyone have an idea when it's due to come out in the US market?

Symbiotic Infection on June 14, 2007 3:42 AM

i have the 30gb ZVW and i need to know what i need to do to replace the HDD with a better one. if anyone knows HDD dimentions it would help. if you have info on this process please e-mail me as i do not spend much time looking at forums.

Nick on July 6, 2007 10:11 PM

I just shot Creative an email asking about a release date for North America, and here is the response:

"Unfortunately, we do not have a release date for the slimmer version Zen Vision M 60gb. We are expecting to receive this model, but do not expect it for another 2 - 3 months."

I don't know if I want to wait that long. I may just ebay it.

andy on July 30, 2007 12:28 PM

The fatter version has run out on both Creative's and Amazon's website. I phoned them up to ask if they have any more coming in, and the woman said maybe a week or so. She remained tight lipped on any new versions though, only said that "we generally release something new each year or so".

But perhaps the running out is a sign of new things to come???

mark on August 4, 2007 12:20 AM

I just keep visit visiting this blog for any updates and I've never waited so long for something that seems trivial yet important to have the not-so-sleek-as-ipod-but-ok-thing instead of the big-fat-idiot, already carrying a bulky phone in one pocket. I just wish Creative were playing better with releasing stuff in US or may be they waited for the iphone buzz to cool off and sell off their own refurbished junk for seemingly cheap price but many issues.
To all the ah at Creative's decision making brass, kudos to you .... I'll still wait and keep cursing until you release the zen slim soon in US. After all the wait I wonder if its any worth at all .... idiots.

gs6456 on August 8, 2007 7:08 AM

You can already get it on E-bay.

ge3902 on August 11, 2007 10:12 PM

This is yet ANOTHER in a long line of amazing screw-ups and "dont give a damn about our customers" snafus. HOw in hell can anyone associated with Creative at any significant level of authority not understand that they are pissing off potential customers. Announce a date for the slimmer viersions and start listening to blogs and posts about what your customers want. One would thing that the over 200 million customer base of America would warrant more respect than what we get from Creative. Oh well, at least we know the reason they are behind the curve vs Apple. I cant stand the obsessive control that Steve Jobs builds into his products but at least he knows how to market them effectively and how to make a product that is cutting edge. Note to Samsung, Toshiba, and the rest of you guys---The market is HUNGRY for an 80-100 gig mp3/video player that is thin, fully compatible with all codexes and reliable. Hard to believe that companies are this damn dumb

Bravo ge3902, bravo

ken on August 15, 2007 7:50 AM

Still waiting... waiting for the world to change.. and creative labs with their fat players.. oh well now the Archos 605 is about to be released so I think I will go with that instead!

Joe on August 27, 2007 7:27 PM

I feel its on its way to US in a month or two from now just cos Zen 30 GB is on sale at buy.com, dell.com etc after the flurry of sales of refurbs of other kinds of zen.

Creative, pls let us know a date for the slimmer zen in US. Don't keep us waiting for ever. I know there's ebay but want to try it out b4 shelling out my bucks being a student.

Joe on September 26, 2007 5:54 PM

Thanks for making me a fool waiting for the zen 60 slim. I waited for about 6 months delaying my mp3 purchase and now you make me wait for the new 16gb zen till nov.
Kudos to creative. I just lost my patience long back but still keep waiting cursing my bad luck just because Apple's cons are Creatives pros and vice versa.

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Samsung P3
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 was a success and the P3 is a very welcome and substantial update. Samsung has paid close attention to users on P2 issues and made great strides in addressing and improving most of them. The best feature of the P3 is its native video support. Most content you thow at it will playback without conversion on the great looking screen. Stop by the Samsung P3 forums for more details or check out our indepth P3 review.

  • Microsoft Zune 120
    Samsung P2

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. You can check out the latest Zune 120 & 16 review or stop by our Zune forums for the latest.

  • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely. Check out our review.
