Sony Walkman S600/S700 Series

sony-nw-s700.jpg

Sony was just full of announcements today. In addition to all the Video Walkman talk, the company confirmed previous rumors by inking up the "official" stamp and slamming it down on the NW-S600 and NW-S700 series.

Both flash players feature a 3-line OLED display, MP3/AAC/WMA/ATRAC support, up to 50 hours of battery life, and a nifty 3-minute quick charge that fills the device with enough juice for 3 hours of playback. The NW-S600 will be available in 1GB ($125) and 2GB (more than $125) versions. The NW-S700 will be, too, but it also includes an FM tuner and integrated noise cancellation and rounds out the storage-capacity offerings with a 4GB ($240) model.

The NW-700, dressed up in an assortment of colors, will make its debut in Japan next week. The NW-600 will follow suit in black, pink, and blue on November 18.

Nice metallic colors.. the usual beautiful Sony design.. but album art on a screen this size?? Surely that's some kind of a joke...

chrisb on October 13, 2006 10:14 AM

The unit is 3.43"x1.07"x0.58" (87.2x27.4x14.9mm) per the Sonystyle site. If you look at larger pics of the unit, the album art doesn't look too horrible. The real proof will be seeing it in person.

You can pre-order the 1 & 2 GB units on sonystyle.com. They're expected to ship Nov. 15.

God,i just bought an ipod nano 8gb...now this.

I have to say,i havent been enjoying the nano at all :s its so crappy that it doesnt have any dedicated volume control.
I cant adjust it while im on my bike ffs.

The sound,oh god the sound. As a metal freak ive always used sony before, but was tempted by the nano.
Im telling ya,people who say ipod has good sound should be shot.
And its not the earbuds cuz i replaced em with sennheizers...hell...the sound cracks all the time, when a highpitched voice come you hear it screetching, ect.

Ebay will be getting an ipod nano 8gb next week, and hopefully i can sell it for the price of a Sony S700 4gb model.

I want sony back :((

Looking damn good !
Used to own the nw-e005 and the sound was friggin good, the battery life was awsome...only thing was that you couldnt read it in sunlight.

I'm getting one of these !

Well. its very good as it looks...and already got mine a few days ago, as I compared it to nano's, so sorry, forget the nano's get this one if you're really looking for a real sound!!!
By the the way mine is NW-S706F 4gb with noise cancelling, its cool and sounds more than you expected!!!

Just bought one and I'm returning it. This is NOT an mp3 player. It will only work through Sony's own software - SonicStage 4.3, which is full of bugs and install problems. It will not work with windows media player or any Linux players. This is because it converts mp3s into Sony's own proprietary format as it loads them to the player, so it is not a native MP3 device.

AVOID!!!!

Gotta agree with Mark. Sound quality, design and overall quality are typical Sony...superb. The real issue is that completely crap Sonicstage software. They'd sell a truckload of these a month just on sound quality alone, if they'd ditch the proprietary format and software.

Jamal on June 5, 2007 11:17 PM

I got one of these the other day and although you have to load your music with the poorly designed Sonicstage it will load as an MP3 or at least when I scroll through the menu it tells me that they are MP3. Either way I love my except that it is Pink : (

One thing that is annoying is the cord from the headset to the unit. Its weighted in the middle with a connector, which does lengthen the cord, however, it pulls the earplugs out of your ears. There are accessories to help alleviate this but ... I don't want to sell my soul to Sony either. The sound quality is good, the sonicstage itself is a waste, BUT I only use it when I am transferring mp3's to the unit proper otherwise its inert (the software enables you to remove the application as default).
If I could remake my choice I would have picked a different product however not the iPOD nano.

  • Samsung P2
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 has been gaining quite a following lately and rightfully so. If you are looking for something well designed, innovative, and feature packed; you should look into this full touch screen wonder. The Bluetooth feature set is what I find to be the most intriguing, with the ability to tether to your phone to make calls or wirelessly transfer with no restrictions to other P2s. Check out the review or stop by our ever growing P2 forums to get the latest info.

  • Toshiba Gigabeat T400
    toshiba gigabeat t400

The Gigabeat T400 is without a doubt my favorite flash player at the moment. It does have one major setback in that it only comes in a 4GB, shame on you Toshiba. What makes me love this player is it's ultra slick sexy design, very easy- just pick up and use interface, and killer sound quality that would make Cowon users envious. This player is a must buy for anyone who sports a premium set of headphones. Full review to come but you should really just buy one.

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • JAYS q-JAYS
    JAYS q-JAYS

The q-JAYS are great in ear phones. They offer excellent clarity, silky treble, realistic midrange, and a nice bass response. They're comfortable, incredibly tiny, and come with a huge selection of accessories. While they certainly are analytic phones, they're still fun to listen to. The q-JAYS respond well to EQing, and can be tweaked to fit almost anyone's sound preference. Recommended for anyone owning a good sounding player and well encoded audio files. Check out our review.
