Disney Mix Max - Portable Video for the Tots
Disney is not new to the world of digital media. Many months ago Mickey and friends released the Disney Mix Stick screenless, shuffle-like MP3 player that used SD memory and preloaded SD content cards. The player was not suited for anyone who even remotely appreciated music but was more than enough to please the tween demographic.
This time around, the Mix Max will sport a 2.2” 220 x 176 color screen, along with 512MB of internal memory with the option to add up to 2GB via the SD/MMC memory slot. In addition to being able to play your own MP3/WMA and WMV content, you will be able to purchase Mix Max Clips, which are SD cards preloaded with Disney Channel video content. The player will also be able to player the first-generation Mix Clips that contained only audio content.
The player is priced for the tots as well at $100 and will be available at Target and other common mass retailers. Get your kids hooked on gadgets early and stick one under the tree this coming holiday season.

My mom just bought the original mix stick, but it's already out-dated.Where can I buy this,PLEASE!!!

how come no stores have the videos for the max stix in stock????? they are impossible to buy or order. i have gone to 4 stores that carry max stix they have the stix but no videos how. target has plenty of max stix for 99.99 just no videos
Cindy on October 14, 2006 3:32 PM
I have found them at Target for $99.00 I bought 3 for my daughters for Christmas already. Last year I tried to get the Mix Stick and could not get it anywhere so had to turn to good ol' eBay!!! and of course paid WAY more than I should have! Keep checking Target, Best Buy and Circuit City. They all have online stores as well.

Does the software it comes with lets you convert DVDs to Disney Mix Max format? Or do I have to buy a special software to convert DVD to wmv? Thanks
Darrin Brunner on November 18, 2006 3:51 PM
There is no conversion software included. Instead you are instructed to use Windows Media Player to transfer files. While this works fine for the MP3's and JPGs, transferring videos in WMV format seems to take more effort. I haven't been successful yet, but supposedly you can use the free version of Windows Media Encoder to convert to a compatible format before transferring with Media Player.

I am easily able to copy movies to my PSP and iPOD. So far I am UNABLE to figure out how to copy a movie onto my sons Mix Max. I tried the Windows Media Encoder, I have purchased software to convert files to ".wmv" format. I spent 5 hours trying today with no success. This "DRM 9 or DRM 10" thing is killing me!

I bought my 7 year old daughter a mix stick in July for her birthday. Now she has to have a Mix Max! After spending some time playing with the Mix Max I am able to convert our existing DVDs into the correct format. I also purchased a 2 gig memory stick. So far I have stored 4 movies, 40 pictures, 30 songs and still have roughly 1 gig left between the internal memory and the stick. If Disney would have added a didgital camera to this thing it would be absolutely perfect. Now for how to convert files. Before you can use the Windows Media Encoder you have to rip the DVD to a readable form. I suggest using the software at
http://www.godownload.org/ImtooDVDTOPocket.htm
After you have ripped the DVD use the Windows Media Encoder.

Feel free to e-mail if you need help. Good luck.

I have bought my daughter the princess max but I am reallly scared that it will get scratched up and dropped. Is there some kind of carrying case for this anywhere? Has anyone found one?
keith on December 19, 2006 5:33 PM
I found both a plastic/vinyl protective sleeve that comes in purple, blue, & pink and a pink leatherlike case at Target.
keith on December 19, 2006 5:40 PM
If anyone needs help coverting your existing DVDs to a format that the Mix Max will read, I have finally figured it out. I already posted it once here but the post has not appeared. In the case anyone needs to know before Christmas, let me know and I'll repost if necessary.
Renne on December 19, 2006 9:23 PM
I brough the Mix Max for my son as a Christmas gift. I would like to know if this item would be a good gift for his age group or does he need the real thing. I was able to find a real MP3 player for the same price, but I thought it would be too hard for him to understand and download music & videos. I've read some of the messages posted on this site and it seems that the process can be difficult to covert a video ito the MP3. I would be grateful for a response.
Mike on December 20, 2006 8:40 PM
Renee, this mp3 player is fine and songs/videos can easily be freely downloaded from Limewire or learn to get the pro version FREE at youtube.com

Keith, Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction with imToo. Have you figured out best settings to use to make this simpler? I used General Pocket PC Excellent quality. Curious what you used to create the WMV file? I haven't finished yet but was curious if you were able to end up with a single WMV to convert to WMP9? Any help or details would be much appreciated!! Merry Christmas!!

Steve on December 21, 2006 6:30 PM
Hi
I bought the Mix Max and was interested in emailing Keith directly to discuss options.
Steve on December 21, 2006 6:37 PM
Hi
Can you email me at sbaran68@gmail.com. Thanks Steve
keith on December 22, 2006 11:18 AM
My e-mail address is kahowell@accmats.com if you need help.
Justin- Pull up the ImToo software and insert your dvd. Use General Pocket PC (*.wmv) Don't use excellent quality as it makes the file too large and the quality isn't an issue on such a small screen. Click "DVD" to open the DVD. Then deselect all of the checked boxes when the software finishes reading the dvd. Then find the largest (longest time) file in the list and select it only. Then click "rip." Depending on the movie, the ripping can take 2 hours or more.
After the dvd file has been ripped, I usually rename the file the Title of the DVD. Then use the windows media encoder. All instructions and the software links can be found at
http://disney.memorexelectronics.com/downloads/DMP9050_WMV_encoding.pdf
Follow the instructions. It helps to print them out. The encoding can take as much time as ripping, so be prepared to spend 4 hrs or more on total.
After the file has been encoded, you can copy it directly to the Mix Max using the USB cable, either to the enternal memory or to a memory card. I reccommend 1-2 gig sd cards and right now everyone has them on sale. Circuit City and Best Buy currently have 2 gigs for less than $40.
I hope this helps. If not please e-mail me.

I am having trouble getting songs that we've purchased from itunes burned onto the mix max. I had no trouble with the ones we bought from walmart.com since they are wma format. I changed it to mtp in the connection mode as instructed but now what?
Tim Stone on December 26, 2006 2:09 PM
The only device that can read iTunes files is an iPod. The easiest way I've found to get them on the Mix Max is to burn a CD from iTunes and then rip it into mp3 via Windows Media Player, then they should go right onto your Mix Max.
Kim on December 26, 2006 6:50 PM
Just got my daughter's Mix Max out! She is very excited! We had no trouble putting her music on it, but we cannot figure out how to get pictures on it??? Please help! I can't even get the pictures onto my Windows Media Player? What are we doing wrong? Thanks!
Allison Young on December 26, 2006 10:07 PM
To Tim Stone:
I read your response to Jennifer's problem, which is mine -- except I have a mac. How do I rip the burned cd into mp3 via Windows Media player (which I have on my mac), and then load them onto the Mix Max? The mix max loads on my desktop when I connect to the USB port but, obviously, the windows install disk that came with the mix max is of no value to me.
Thanks!

Is it possible to copy a content card such as Cheeta girls to a backup sd card?
If so, I tried but I am unable to play the SD 1 gig copy of it in the player.

For those of you still experiencing problems with the encoding process, you have my sympathy. I know it can be frustrating. I have received several e-mails saying that the 9.1 encoding option is not available, only 9.2. Make sure you download the correct version of the Windows Media Encoder. What I use is Windows Media Encoder 9 Series, Version 9.00.00.2980, Product ID:69542-821-9321321-04960.

We got 2 mix max players one for a 7 year old girl and 1 for a 10 year old boy. I had no problem helping my 7 year old rip and sync her favorite albums with plenty of space left. My 10 year old figured out on his own how to rip from mp3 rocket. I still cannot figure out how to move the jpeg pictures to the wmp 10- the instructions for that were of no help to me. Any suggestions? I saw someone else asked the same. We have two sd card movies and am looking forward to trying to burn Pirate's of the Caribbean 2 for my son. The cheetah girls aren't his thing. Can you tell me where I might find the SD slot on my modem we have a DELL.
Lesley on December 27, 2006 8:07 PM
Keith,
I have gone back and checked on the encoder. It is not available now. The product code you gave is not listed. The new code is now 69542-465-082932404984. If I try to download the newest 9 series of course I need Windows Media Format SDK 9.5 - greek to me. It's funny how a laptop purchased less than 6 months ago already needs new updates?!
If someone has other suggestion I'll be waiting - my daughter is anxiously awaiting Pirates of the Caribbean 2 as well!
keith on December 28, 2006 12:33 PM
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx
This is the link to the correct Windows Encoder. Use the second one from the top, Windows Media Encoder 9 Series. The file size is 9,450 kb. DO NOT download the BETA/ Latest version which is the first choice.
John on December 28, 2006 4:30 PM
This is very frustrating, I don't how they would ever expect young kids to figure this out. I still have yet to get it to work. Keith all your post are helpful, thank you. I still haven't gave up.
keith on December 28, 2006 4:53 PM
Children (and most adults) would have no hope. I was fortunate enough to enlist an IT department for my help.
On a side note, my wife just called and said that our daughter's Mix Max will not power on. More on that as it develops.
Thomas on December 28, 2006 7:37 PM
I was able to follow Keith's instructions and download the encoder too
and was able to make a movie that plays on the MixMax.
The PDF formatted instructions have to be followed to the "t", but make
allowances for the changes in the newer MS Encoder menus choices.
Plus, Im using the new MS Media Player v11.
Basically, Disney wants this product to support its own movies already
loaded on chips and sold for $20 a pop. I doubt they figured on its
customers using it for their own movie ripping, albiet it can be done.
What this process that Keith pointed us to allows us more flexibility,
effectively to reverse engineer the video process and put on our own
movies into a PocketPC format that is compatible to this MixMax player.
As an electrical engineer in the software industry myself, it took me a
couple of hours to get this all to work right. But I would have given
up if it were not for Keith's reference to the PDF guide.
Start with a small demo avi movie clip and get that to work before you
attempt to do a full length movie. Get the process down before being
slowed down by a huge project like a 2 hour movie.
Thanks Keith.

My daughter received this for Christmas. I initially had to reset it to get it to work and she was able to watch a max clip movie on it. I was able to load some pictures on it for her. The next day I had to reset it again so she could listen to a mix clip. Now when we turn it on all we have is a white screen. The pictures that I loaded on it are still there but we can't get the menu screen anymore since the reset doesn't work anymore. I can't get through to tech support by phone since the line is always busy.I emailed them my problem but haven't received a response. I'm not sure if I should wait for them to get back to me or to just go ahead and reformat. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Amanda on December 29, 2006 9:47 AM
I've successfully coverted a music video and put it on my daughter's Mix Max, but the past few days have been trying with no luck to convert an hour long DVD.
I downloaded Im TOO DVD and it seems to work pretty well. It also allowed Windows Media Encoder to convert it nicely. The only problem is that it's the trial version and is only allowing me to rip the first five minutes of the movie. This is a problem mostly because I'm still not sure if the converter is not working on the file I previously ripped using a different program because of the type of file, or just because the file is too large.
If any one knows of a way to get this thing to rip this entire DVD, I would be forever grateful.
Amanda
Allison on December 29, 2006 9:59 AM
Has anyone figured out how Mac users can load music (not videos) onto Mix Max? iTunes does't work. Thanks.
keith on December 29, 2006 3:33 PM
Amanda: Rip five minutes and then use the Encoder. Transfer that file and see if it works. If it does then you know that you did it right and will need to purchase the full blown version of Im TOO.
John: It probably isn't a software issue. Some DVDs (especially Sony) are protected and the Im Too software will not rip it. Try different DVDs and I bet you will get it to work. I couldn't rip High School Musical and alas had to shell out the $20 for a movie we already own.
Crashing update- All I had to do was reset the Mix Max and it worked fine again. This is after the small one attempted to remove SD card with a butter knife. Not a good idea- btw.
e.d. on December 29, 2006 4:19 PM
Update...I finally was able to get through to customer support. I told them that I had a white screen and that the player will not reset. We tried to reformat it but that didn't work. I was told to return it to the store. I guess if you have a white screen its dead.

I picked up one of these units at a Target for 69.98 on clearance. (I'm too cheap to get an Ipod or Zune...)
Anyway, since I have become addicted to the t.v. show, Jericho, I figured I would convert one of the episodes to play on this Mix Max.
Using the pdf instructions above, it worked perfect!.....Well, except for the ratio. The video was too tall for the width.
Since Keith has been a real help to most here so far, I hope that he can help me too.
The original video is 608x336, how do I reduce the size to keep the proper aspect as it was recorded from hdtv in the widescreen format.
Any help on cropping this to display correctly would be greatly appreciated.
Props to you Keith for your help so far!
Dawn on December 30, 2006 8:45 AM
To Keith and other posters: Your posts have been a godsend. I'm not very technically oriented and I've been able to rip several dvds and get them on the mix max. I've got a few things to add. I purchased the IMtoo software after trying the trial version and it's worth the $30. When using the encoder, I too found that there was no option for Audio 9.1, but chose 9.2 and its working fine.
As Keith mentioned, I've also found that some DVDs just won't rip and cause the machine to shut down. I'm glad it's not a problem on my end. I had this issue with High School Musical and Over the Hedge so I'm guessing it's just as Keith noted - protected DVDs.
Here's one puzzling thing --- when I rip Star Wars movies (original trilogy), the beginning frames where the story scrolls up skip around a lot and show English, Spanish, French and replay over and over again. Once you get past that section, the movie actually plays just fine. I told my kids to just fast forward past the beginning, but that get's frustrating as the Mix Max doesn't fast forward very well.
Finally, thanks again to Keith and the other loyal posters. I'm so glad I found this site and it's quickly becoming my new addiction!

I just got a mix max for my daughter for Christmas. I got an ipod as well for Christmas. I see that itunes has several of the Disney shows for downloads. I only see that these are available from itunes (ie, The Suite Life of Zach and Cody and Hannah Montana). My daughter is dying for me to download these and put them on her mix max. I have downloaded some music through itunes, but I haven't been able to get it onto her mix max, so I don't want to download the tv shows if I can't get them on her mix max to watch. Also, the CD enclosed w/the mix max will not allow me to choose the top option "Install the Mix It Plugin" and the bottom option "Windows 98 SE Driver" gives me the error msg "This installer only supports Windows 98 Second Edition". What am I needing? My computer is a Gateway if that helps.

Target had the accessories at Christmas time. But I have yet to find them since, I should have just bought them then. Try www.Disneyshopping.com they might. I seem to recall best buy had a few accessories but not any mix max players, again this was at christmas time. Walmart stores only carry the Mix Max stuff online. To DS MixMaxers:
Im ripping StarWars IV-VI right now via a program called:
DVD to PocketPC 4.0 (makayama.com). Runs pretty fast under 30 mins to make a movie for the PocketPC format.
Ive been using this program for over a year to put DVD movies on to my HP IPaq 4355 when I travel.
From there, the procedure to encode to the MixMax format will be the second part of the two step dance.
I think its pretty funny and the American Way that someone is jumping on the opportunity to bundle the software and process outlined herein.
Instead, Ill use my software and Keiths flow and thank him for his contribution without profit.
2GB SD memory chips can be had for under 25 bucks if you search for them at sites like FRYES ELECTRONICS or STAPLES etc. I think my wife just picked up a 2Gigger for $10. Caveot Emptor peeps.
keith on January 5, 2007 11:05 AM
If there is a chance to make a dollar, someone will find it. I'm glad I could help anyone with their issues. I know being a parent can be frustrating enough without complicated gadgets.
I expect that SD cards will continue to increase in storage capacity and decrease in price. That will help us in our quest to load and store every dvd imaginable without limiting ourselves to the few titles Disney currently has for the MixMax.

I am also looking for a way to erase and clear the internal memory on the mix max. I bought 3 for Christmas and 2 of the 3 are great, but my son's won't loas more than 30 songs and I removed them (i thought) at least when you go to songs on the mix max menu it says "no songs", but now that I try to load again like I did the other 2 players, I get a message stating that there is not enough free space. Ugh.....

Does anyone know what causes the clock to reset to 5:33 a.m.? Has anyone else seen this?
I now have a second princess version that I purchased for my daughter for Christmas. I returned the first one because neither of the pre-loaded SD movies would play on the Mix Max. I just got "file not supported" messages when I tried to play the movies. With the new one, one of the movies plays, and the other gets the "file not supported" message. I have had no problems moving music from my PC to the internal memory, but this SD movie thing is annoying. I have reset the Mix Max, and the clock and movie problem still exist. Can the movies on the pre-loaded SD cards go bad?
I plan on trying the customer support number tomorrow. Wish me luck!

to delete MP 3's Sync to the Mix-Max with Windows Media player
underneath the back button is the media player category button, make sure you have music selected.
Go straight down from there and click on Mix-max. It should open several choices like recently added, Artist, album, songs etc. I click on songs and right click on the song i want to remove and select delete. You can delete out of any of them whatever works best for you.

Thomas on January 8, 2007 6:23 PM
Erasing data off the MixMax...
You can also put the SD memory chip into your PC, assuming you have a SD slot on it (if not you buy USB external ones from SanDisk) and manage your files manually.
But Id recommend the proper method that John described via the WMPlayer interface.
Paula on January 8, 2007 9:37 PM
You can also go to My computer with your mix max plugged in, click on it then under the heading- devices with removable storage click on the mix max it will then bring up everything that's on the mix max and you can right click to delete on each individual song. I've tried to delete through the windows media player 10 and it didn't work but this way did. I also recently downloaded wmp11 it is very nice compared to the wmp10.
I still can't figure out how to put pictures on the thing. I bought three 512 gb sd cards at walmart today for 12 bucks each still cheaper than the 1gb for 50$. any help with the photo thing would be appreciated. I've learned alot here.
Thanks to all the pioneers who have blazed the way and imparted knowledge freely thanks!
bill on January 9, 2007 9:10 AM
copy and paste the pictures just as you described with the songs.
might help to resize the pictures to 220x176 as the smaller files are faster to load up. you might want them in jpeg format also.
keith on January 9, 2007 2:57 PM
As Bill said, just copy and paste. I put our pics in jpeg format.
512 sd cards will still hold alot of songs and quite a few pictures. I think you will only get 1 movie per card, maybe two if you are lucky. But go whatever route saves you the most money.
bill on January 10, 2007 9:26 AM
i have a 1gig card with "the philadelphia experiment" and two 40 minute t.v. shows with 370 meg to spare.
i figured out how to keep the "widescreen" formatting on the mix max. even with the movies in the "220x122" format, the video still looks pretty good. i am really impressed with this player.
i just wish encoding these movies was a faster process.

For a $100 gadget aimed at children, I have been very impressed. There are a few things I wish they would change (anyone lost the plastic piece intended to cover USB slot?). But overall I am very pleased.
I agree with Bill, I wish the encoding process was not so time consuming. But it still beats buying the limited clips.

Just picked one up at target on clearance for 49.00. Also got 2 movies at 13.99 each. highschool musical and cheetah girls. This is the target in clairemont mesa...in san diego, CA. There were about 10 mix max's and 6 of the mix sticks...around 30 movies..and 3 protective covers for the max..

http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1634484spriggig post helped me lots
Darrin Brunner on January 13, 2007 10:06 PM
I have two of these, the first one, bought back in October, developed the 5:33am clock problem AND it would not show video file titles (all that showed was the little icon on the left, the video played, but you had to guess which one you were picking) on the 1GB SD card add-in but would show the titles of the files on the internal memory. I was able to exchange that one at Target.
Now, the second one, bought in November has the 5:33am clock problem. I have not tried to exchange that one yet.
I'm disappointed with the tech support from Disney. I hoping for a firmware update to solve this problem.
BTW, I'm "spriggig" and I'm glad to hear that someone was helped by the guide I posted at videohelp.com. It's a PDF that follows the same procedure as the "official" guide, but shows how to save the settings so you don't have to re-enter them every time and also shows how to increase the quality of the video compression.
sharon on January 14, 2007 4:29 PM
do you have to go through mix it plug in when putting music on the sd cards. I have been putting music on them and the player keeps saying loading and it is only 13 songs
Darrin Brunner on January 16, 2007 11:44 AM
I emailed Memorex about the 5:33am problem, here is their response:
"We are working on the problem. We do not have an answer yet."
@Sharon
The mix it plug in "analyzes" the music files and then uses the analysis to create a playlist when you press the "mix it" button on the mix max. It is completely optional.
david tom on January 17, 2007 4:54 PM
I cannot get the software from then disk to install on my computer. The "install mix-it-plugin" screen appears, im clicking install and nothing happens.
Can i be doing somthing wrong?
I called consumer support, they stated that i have bad disks(since purchased 2)
keith on January 18, 2007 5:18 PM
David- Are you attempting to load the disk that came with it? Or are you trying to load Mix Max movies or songs on your computer? Because if you are just trying to load the basic disk, my advice is just to skip it altogether. As long as your music is saved as a Mp3 file on your computer you can just drag and drop into the Mix Max without going through any other steps.
See Darrin's message. "The mix it plug in "analyzes" the music files and then uses the analysis to create a playlist when you press the "mix it" button on the mix max. It is completely optional."
Mark on January 19, 2007 8:34 PM
I got 2 of these things for my kids in December and both have the clock issue (resets to 5:33am), great idea but poor quality. If anyone gets a fix for this problem please post.
Sarah on January 20, 2007 9:47 AM
I need help, too! I've been reading all your comments and they have been very helpful. Glad I'm not the only one that is feeling "stumped" here. I'm thinking that maybe Keith can email me directly, if he doesn't mind...and give me help? Or Can I email you, Keith?
But, anyway... Here's the problem we are having. [Our System is a windows xp.]
I was able to get a movie onto my hard drive. I guess you could say that I was able to decode the movie. I found the folder it was stored in, and there were quite a few files there to choose from [don't know what any of them mean either]. I then found the "largest" one, as I was told to do, and then I encoded it with the Window Media Encoder. That seemed to work. But, when we went to try the movie it only plays 25 min. of the movie and NO sound. What am I doing wrong? How do I get the whole movie? I do have a "profile" in my encoder for MixMax, that I found someplace on the web...and the setting seem to be correct. Our sample movie was Ella Enchanted, it was the first movie I grabbed [and isn't a clip i've been able to find at the stores ...besides...we own it already on a DVD...like so many other Disney movies]. I'd like to add more movies to our "collection" so that we can play them in the kids players. Any help would be great.
Also...We were told at Target that these players are a "seasonal" item. We just picked up Mix Max players at Target for $49.99 each. The Mix players were going for $24.99. The clips were $9.97 each. Not all Targets have them on clearance yet...and you have to look for them. You know how target puts items on the end caps...look at all end-caps.
Sarah on January 20, 2007 2:56 PM
Okay...I'm going to start all over. I've deleted anything on my computer that deals with the "ella" movie. So, I'm starting from scratch here. I've downloaded a decoder software. do I have to use the one mentioned, i've got one called dvdshrink. I've got my wm encoder downloaded. Now what? Anyone out there today that can help me. My DH is starting to give me looks here. This is so frustrating...way to much time spent on this project. Maybe I'll have to wait for Disney to come out with more...hate to do that, but, what's a mom to do. Good thing my kids have Disney stock!
I'm able to get music on/off the internal space, and even onto a SD card...But, video, that's another story. I shouldn't say that. I actually have 2 small video that I had on my computer of our past family vacation. They seem to work okay. Don't ask me how I did it tho. Still haven't tried pictures yet.
Dave on January 21, 2007 1:37 AM
Thanks Keith for all your help and input. My daughter got a MixMax for Christmas. I just followed your process for converting DVD to MixMax WMV via ImToo and WME, and it was successful. It was a pretty straight forward process. The only thing I noticed was when I play the video on the MixMax, the audio is slightly out of sync. Sort of like watching a Japanese movie. Have any ideas?
I too am seeing the 5:33 am problem. Hopefully, we'll see a fix soon. I am working on figuring out how to convert Disney shows I purchased from iTunes onto the MixMax. I may have to record them onto DVD, then convert, per your process.
Thanks again for all your help.
Sarah on January 21, 2007 11:43 AM
Tried to post a follow up...but, it isn't showing up. So, I'm trying again. After following Keith's advise...I've downloaded both programs and have tried all his steps. I did get my "5 min." trial version movie to work when I tried it on one movie. Thought of going ahead and purchasing the program...but, going to try with another movie before actually purchasing it. Want to make sure I'm comfortable with the program first.
I did try posting a question tho...can i delect everything that was saved during decoding/encoding once I've renamed a movie with my title?
michellee on January 22, 2007 12:28 AM
Hi, new to this mix max thing - bought 2 on clearnace at target for my 2 kids.
i followed the steps that keith (thank you!) gave & was able to get the dvd converted, etc. but when I transfer to the player the sound is distorted. i thought maybe i did something wrong, so i put the kids high school musical songs (from our windows media player) onto the darn thing & it sounds awful too.
i dont want to open the other one to try it out to see if it is better, because then I am afraid i will get stuck with 2 sucky players.
let me know if this is something i am doing wrong or if maybe i have a bad player - or is the sound quality really poor & I was hoping for more than it can provide??
i feel so dumb, I am supposed to be part of the computer-age, but this thing has me pulling out my hair!! argh!!
keith on January 22, 2007 3:30 PM

Pictures are actually the easiest thing to load to the Mix Max. When you have it plugged into the USB port, open up my computer, you'll see the icon for the Mix Max, just drag your picture files to it. Worked like a charm on mine. Now, my question, Target discontinued all the stuff for the Mix Max, any ideas where to get accessories and movies for it other than ebay?
Deb VanHouten on January 26, 2007 12:07 PM
Not all Targets have discontinued them. I have three local stores that have them at regular retail price (chicagoland). Plus you can still get stuff at disneyshopping.com
Deb VanHouten on January 26, 2007 12:20 PM
Also, Best Buy still carries them. I just bought an AC adapter at Best Buy yesterday.

Hello I am new to the posts here but I am sure I have some info to share with a few of you, I will not get into great detail tonight as it is 11:30pm here but in the morning I promise I will help hopefully as much as Chris, my experience with the mix-max has been just as aggravating as I see many others shared my disgust with this product, but I assure you, you are not alone those of use that purchased a PSP have been working on these same problems for over two years now and have to contend with Sony changing things up constantly..... But as far as the Mix-Max goes my experiences with the PSP helped me to quickly solve the same problems you are facing when I purchased three 2 for my kids and 1 for my younger sister and so far have kept all three of them happy with content and I have even managed to automate some of this into a script which I will publish to a web site I am building or should I say have been working on for over a month now, FREE of course as I am sure all of you are not interested in investing any more cash it these "children’s toys" I will be posting programs needed links and downloads for these to ease the pain I will also be including some tips and tricks and how - to's on acquiring the media you plan to place on the MIX-Max all legal of course.
Michellee may I ask when you say sounds horrible if you could elaborate a little such as is it choppy, static, low volume or erratic play back
Bernard on January 28, 2007 1:23 AM
I need to retract my last post as I have surfed a little research and as it turns out the tools I have used in the past have sense been taken off the market due to people using it to pirate movies, so this will delay my web posting of the info as I will need to figure out plan B, but if by chance any of you purchased dvdxcopy before it went illegal the encoding of movies to the MIXMAX should and is answered via previous posts

Sarah on January 28, 2007 9:27 AM
One thing that I've been doing is breaking movies in to "parts" or sections. With the player having a "slow" fast forward option...it makes watching the movies easier for my kids. If they have to stop watching a movie for some reason or another...they don't have to watch past parts that they have seen...they can just jump to the next part of a movie. I try to break the movie into 30-40 min. sections.
Deb on January 29, 2007 2:33 PM
I purchased the full version of ImToo, but it only seems to be ripping half the movie. It is 39 minutes, but it completes after 17. Anyone know what I have wrong? This also happened with the trial version (supposed to get 5 minutes, but I only got just under 2 minutes). I am assuming it is a setting somewhere but I can't seem to find it. Please help!

Kristen on January 30, 2007 6:07 PM
Hello! I have read all of the postings and they have great info! However, none answered the question I have: has anyone found a good website to buy and download Disney music videos? My daughter wanted this to play all her favorite music videos that she sees on the Disney Channel. I have an iPod and use itunes (which I know is not compatible). When I set up my mix max, it gave me a choice of stores, none of which have age appropriate music videos....I learned that videos under the genre "babes" doesn't mean "kids". I made the mistake of browsing "babes" very briefly, my 5 year old was sitting next to me and was shocked at what she saw! Anyway, does anyone know where to get disney music videos (other than the mix clips)???
Thanks! Kristen
Linda on January 30, 2007 7:41 PM
Kristen,
Hello yes you can go to limewire.com and get all kinds of Disney Music. Most of the same songs that come on the Disney SD music cards. And best of all they are FREE.
Linda on January 30, 2007 7:55 PM
Deb,
Hello! When you open up ImToo are you clicking on the DVD and bringing up the movie you want to rip? It will take a while to bring up all the information that is on the CD. Once it is done doing that you will see that all of the files are selected. unselect all of them and just find the longest running time one and select it. Hit Rip and you should be good to go. Have you went to http://microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx You need to print out a copy of that for the windows media encoder. Follow the instructions and La La you will have a full length movie.
If you need anymore help you can email me.
Linda
Mike on January 30, 2007 8:47 PM
Go to lime wire you can use the free version but don't do it with the kids around because as with all free down load site. Their is alot of inapropreate material with the good stuff. Make sure you click on the Avi or WMV formates it will save you a step. Then you wll have to use the windows encoder as described in other postings. Also it can take a long time so I suggest down loading late at night then letting it run at night for both the download and then the encode steps. It all dose work but take alittle time. Good Luck

Hey, I've got a Mix-Max player, and I've been unable to get playlists working! I can't transfer playlists from Windows Media Player (using the directions in the manual), and I can't create custom playlists while I'm using the player, either (by selecting a song, and holding down the play button). No matter what, when I open the Playlist menu on the mix max, it's always blank, there's never anything there. Is there some trick to this? Has anyone else had this problem?
Carlo on February 2, 2007 3:39 PM
My added 2 cents, I used Tivo Desktop and purchased the Tivo Hand held media version for $25. I can bring recorded shows from my Tivo to my PC then use the WMV encoder like above and load any recorded show to the MixMax.... You can get all the disney shows you want...
Sarah on February 3, 2007 8:00 AM
Just a note: I've tried to deselect all, then just selected the "longest one". However, it doesn't always work. More times than not, it doesn't for us. So, most of my movies have to have each chapter selected...then, ripped, in order to do the movie. This has been fine for us, since we have started to convert in "parts" [part1, part2, etc]. This actually makes it easier for the kids to just "skip" to the next part of the movie. Also, my young one loves the videos that have "short movies" on it, or DVD with mult. episodes in them. Example: DragonTales...5 episodes a DVD...equals 5 mini movies to watch. [Much better for her attention spand.] In this movie, we weren't able to select "longest one", so, did each Chapter alone. We then renamed each chapter the episode name, and now she has 5 shows to watch.
So, if you are having problems with certain movies ripping "longest one"...try selecting by chapters. Just remember when using WMencoder, you will have to encode using mult. "sources". Also, make sure you change to "roll over to next source" after each.

Well...1 of the 3 MixMax players now has the "clock issue". Will need to check the other players when the kids get home from school. Anyone found a "fix" yet? It's not that big of an issue, but, it would be nice to have it working, right? Disney....come'on...let's get a "fix" here!
To the person that posted on how to change the time, Thanks...but, with this "clock issue"...that process just doesn't work. It, for us anyway, goes right back to the 5:33a time.

hmm.. I was the one who wrote for the "clock issue" thing so I'll try to help out here........ Look on the paper work and papers that come with the mix max, and I THINK there's a number to call to help with mix max problems. Try calling that and if that doesn't work... Sorry! Good luck, sarah, and everyone else with the "clock issue"!

Hey everyone,
Today my mixmax player started the 5:33am thing and also says "Free 4mb of space to build music library" when you press any of the buttons. It won't play any music/videos even from the mix clips. Anyone have any solutions yet? I still haven't figured out how to add videos to it using my mac computer -- very frustrating! My daughter eagerly awaits using it. If anyone has any solutions....PLEASE let me know! Thanks!
Not telling my name on February 10, 2007 8:54 AM
Hmm.. Jennifer, sorry to say, maybe you have to return it and get a new one. I mean, if the buttons don't work and all.... Sarah on February 11, 2007 10:57 AM
My advise is to read thru the topics above that are posted by Keith. He has some great advice on how to get movies to play. Decoding/Encoding and all that stuff. All his advice has helped us out here. [THANKS KEITH]
It now appears that all three of our players have the "clock issue". I don't dare try to call Disney for help, since many of you have already tried and have gotten nowhere with them. Hopefully someone at Disney starts working on it...so all our players start working again. My advise is: bookmark this website and when someone gets advice on how to fix the clock issues...POST THE RESULTS and "FIX".
Sarah on February 11, 2007 11:17 AM
Deemtee...are you using the programs that Keith suggested? If you are, and are deselect all...then pick the "longest one" and it doesn't work. Try this: deselect all, then check only the chapters in the "longest one" section. That's what we had to do. Most of the "longest ones" checked, that we did, wouldn't work...crapped out and refused to rip...till we did each chapter listed in the "longest one".
The only other thing we had to do was when we did the WMencoder... Once we were ready to add the source, we had to add each chapter as a source...then after each source, chose the option to "roll over to next one". Continue doing these steps till all the chapters are on there. Continue with the rest of Keith's steps in the WMencoder, before choosing to start encoding. It took a bit longer to "set up" the encoding...but, it worked.
Hope that helps for you. Good luck.

I have had a similar problem with the encoder as some have posted. I do not have the option of windows media audio 9.1, only windows media audio 9.2 which will not work. I have unistalled the Winodows Media Controller and reinstalled it, but WMA 9.2 is the only choice. Does anyone know how to roll back or install the windows media audio 9.1 on the medial encoder??

Sarah on February 13, 2007 1:38 PM
Kevin:
This is how mine reads, or how we have it set-up. This is what we have "set", per past post instructions..and for us...it works, on our player. My computer is running Windows Media Player Version 11, but,
we are using the following setting. The movies even play in version 11 player.
Audio "row" says:
Mode CBR
Codec WM Audio 9.2
Video "row" says:
Mode Quality VBR
Codec WM Video 9
Hope it helps. I, too, didn't have any of the options, have uninstall & re-installed...etc.
Maybe find Keith's post...and email him directly. He was kind enough to offer help.

Not telling my name,
I didn't take offense at what you posted. I am by no means the Mix Max Guru. I just found what worked for me and try to help where I am able. As I have learned from others, there are other ways to store and view videos. And as you stated, everyone can't rely solely on me. For example -I tried for a couple of days to help Kevin to no avail. Maybe someone else can assist him. I hope the goal of these posts is to help and inform one another.

Can someone maybe make a like 5min clip or something nad upload it somewhere? Like yousendit.com so I can download it and see if this thing works or not. Ive tried everything posted on here. I converted my avi file first using another program to wmv. Then I loaded the wmv into Windows Media Encoder and followed the settings as mentioned except used Audio 9 since there was no 9.1, I'll try again with audio 9.2. But still it does not work. Says file unsupported.
If someone can please upload a clip of something that you know works on your Mix Max so I can download it and put it on my nephews to see if this thing works at all.
Please and thanks.

Sarah on February 17, 2007 1:21 AM
Not telling my name: [Hey...What's your name anyway?]
No offense taken here either...everyone out here has been so helpful, not only Keith...but, everyone to me. THANKS to all of you and I'm glad we are all here helping each other! I'm learning here too...and everyones input is what makes us all able to use our players and keep our kids happy. The question should be ...Where is Disney's help?
One thing that I did and found NOT to work, was NOT getting the programs that keith [sorry, "everyone"] suggested in the first place. I tried another program first...it was cheaper...free, i should say. I ended up deleting everything, and wasted many hours/time in the process. I started over with the programs suggested. I was very frustrating to say the least. But, once I did what was suggested, it all worked. I took my time, printed everything possible...and followed them, checked and recheck first. Try the decoder, with the "5min." trial. Once you decode it...then encode it in WMencoder. You should get it to work if you have the right setting. I posted what mine are above. [*see below note] Once the movie is done encoding, mine usually ask if I want to view it or something like that. I opt. to do that to get it into our WMplayer "lists".
*I'm pretty sure I got my setting here...but, to be honest...I did alot searching...I don't remember. All I see on my "saved" file is that it was a pdf. file, created on 11-21-06. the person who made the file said that these are the setting that worked for him and that they differed from Disneys. It also was great to have a "profile" for just the MixMax player.
Anyway, if the decoder "5min" works for you, then go ahead and purchase the program. Some movies, most of our that we wanted, I just couldn't decode as "longest"...we had to do by chapters, example Cars...others like Sharktales, worked just fine as a "longest one".
Another tip...do the decoding OR encoding...NOT BOTH and have the computer do nothing else. I tried to decode one movie WHILE encode another...big mistake. Computer didn't know what was going on. I think it needed more asprins than I did. You guessed it...the computer froze and back to square one I was again. I never said I was smart...
Sarah on February 17, 2007 1:51 AM
Okay...found the site. It's http://www.videohelp.com/
Do a search on their site ... disney mix max. This is where I got the "profile" settings for our players. Author/poster is: spriggig
But...read them all. Maybe something else on that site will help.

Has anyone had their player "crash" and not go to any of the options? We reset it and nothing changed. The clock is "wrong" but not stuck on 5:33. Is their a way to restet the firmware? If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
By the way, we used all of Keith's ideas and got 2, 2gb disks full of movies...the one thing we had to do first was decrypt using dvd decrypter and it worked perfectly.
Thanks!
Ronda on February 17, 2007 9:57 PM
Ok...aparently it isn't crashed, the center button is just not working. If we put a card in while it is on, it finds the card and starts the movie. It won't pause and it won't let us acess the menu (even through the home key). It will let us scroll through the card with the down arrow. Has anyone had this problem? It works, just little functionality without the select button!
Oh, I did try to get onto the disney electronics website and it is not functioning at all. Has anyone else found this, too?
Thanks!

Bought 2 mix-max's for my 8 & 10 yr old for xmas. One working fine; the other is "stuck" on LOW BATTERY please recharge. I've tried plugging it into the wall adapter and the computer and NOTHING happens; the battery charge icon doesn't show up and the unit just shuts down. The main menu comes up as soon as I plug it in to either; however, if it's plugged into the computer, it's not detected. Suggestions?

Ok, this is the third unit from Disney that crap out on me again. After synchronizing music and pictures, and attempted to upload video with WMP 10, the unit displays "Free 4mb of space to build music library" message. Checked the internal memory & SD Card. Music & picture files are there. But when you press any of the buttons, it won't play any music or pictures. Reset the unit, but it still doesn't work. Does anyone have solution to this problem? Keith? Please help!
By the way, Disney (memorex electronics) tech supports are incompetent. Called them couple of times. It's a waste of my time.
Jess on February 19, 2007 2:00 AM
I managed to get about 4 files converted and playing. But osmetimes it will encode the first pass from start to end then start the 2nd about in the middle. You'll here sound from the begining when playing it but it starts the video in the middle.
Anyone have this problem? I also found a pgoram I cant afford to buy yet that does Mix Max. I posted about it but after a day or so someone deleted my post. Let me know if anyone wants to know it. I plan to get it as soon as I can.
Jennifer on February 19, 2007 11:29 PM
Henry,
My mixmax did the same thing with the "Free 4mb of space to build music library" message. After several attempts to reset it, I hooked it up to the computer and deleted a few files that I found incompatible, and then reset it, and it worked fine after that. I hope this helps!
Henry on February 20, 2007 12:45 AM
Jennifer,
Thanks for the tips. I'll give it a try.

Is disney discontinuing the Mix Max? It seems that every store is not carrying accessories for it and the only place to find them is on ebay! Target put it on clearance and Best Buy just has a bunch of empty shelf space.
Sarah on February 20, 2007 7:53 AM
Some Target have them on clearance 'cause they are considered "seasonal~christmas items". That is what I was told at our local stores. One Targets, about 25 miles away, told me that they still have their's full price and instock 'cause they still plan on carrying the item...or haven't been told to "clearance" them yet. Best Buy, on the other hand, said "It's very popular...can't keep the item in stock".
One of our local Super Wally-Worlds has the Mix stick and mini-sticks in stock, along with the music clips. They have no spot marked for the Max or the likes...no other accessories tho.
Ebay might be an answer, if you are looking for stuff. As for movies...in the long run...ripping your own, after getting the "listed above programs", might be cheaper in the long run. With ebay price, plus shipping for one movie, you could spend as much as the program above. If you just go ahead and get the program...you would be able to do additional movies...and ones "you want" as well. Just a thought.
Haven't had luck getting on http://disney.memorexelectronics.com/html/support.php
Getting error message. Says: DB Error: connect failed
Anyone else wondering what's up with the site & what's going on with them ??
Rellie on February 20, 2007 3:52 PM
Thanks, to Keith and Sarah....I got mine working and so far so good....My first mix max crapped out on me sort of. I got the mix max jam stand and I don't know if leaving the mix max on it did it in....I called the support from that memcorp place and did get an answer. If the clock is stuck on 5:33 am, then the mix max is a dud. I called Disney and they sent me a new one. So far so good. It does take a awful long time to convert. First I convert from DVD to MP4 (using a DVD to ipod conversion program) because my 123 videoconverter program didn't have the conversion to anything from a DVD. So then I converted my MP4 to WMV and then used the encoder from keith and sarah's suggestion. Then I used windows media player to load the movies to the mix max. And so far so good. I've only been able to load 2 full lenght movies on to a 1gb SD card. I was able to convert CARS, the Princess Bride, Everafter and MARY POPPINS.

Hey everyone! Haven't been on anythingbutipod.com for a while. Keith and Sarah, Thanks for understanding. But I DO take all the bad stuff I wrote back. EVERYONE on this site helps us a lot! Also, I have another question- what exactly IS a mix max jam stand? THey are like 30 dollars, i want to get one, except I have no idea what they are! What are they?
I will now reveal my real name, lol. My real name is Anna.

"3" Cheers for Rellie...we have all helped another one! I'm happy that it's working for you and you got movies to convert & play. I'm not familar to the one program...but, heck, if it works...use it.
Glad you got support Rellie, not many seem to get anywhere. What/Who/etc ... did you call to get the help you needed/replacement/etc? I'm just to cheap to sit on "hold" or the likes, at my expense. My guess...you were lucky, and I'm glad for you!
Sarah, I checked too on the website...got error messages as well.
I've did emailed Disney, and they said they are looking into the problems that I'm having...the "clock issue", customer support [lack of it], and now no web support thru Memorex Electronics. They said they will get back to me.
Here's a thought: Maybe, just maybe, if we all blast them...something will get done. I do find it strange that the links on there site, Memorexectronics, never go to this player or show it exists in there list of products they make/made. An only recently, no links work, except for one dealing with the "battery" of another one of their products. I even had a friend try the link...didn't work for her either. If you think you have help...or know numbers/email to use...let us know. Otherwise.. I'm guessing that it appears we are "one our own". Don't you just love the support that we are giving each other tho?
Here's for memorex... company:

Emily...
Since you are only 5...maybe, you should ask your mom/dad to read thru this board for you. They should be able to find you the answers you need. There is alot of info here...and I'm pretty sure your parents or an older relative can help you get yours to work the way you want with the songs that you want. Good luck.
Welcome back Anna! So that's your name! I've read thru a few and I was wondering too. I'm pretty sure they are like a speaker type machine, that also charges. See past posts...way back [Dec. sometime]. Someone posted on this. We just use regular mini speaker, that they plug into the player. We use to use them for our port. CD players. We charge our Mix Max players at night...via the computer, so we didn't think we need the speaker/charge.

My daughters MIX MAX quit working. I cannot find the direction for the life of me, does anyone know how to reset the unit?? Thanks!
Rellie on February 20, 2007 7:42 PM
1) The mix max jam stand is a speaker / charger for the mix stick and the mix max. It also lights up with the beat of the music. I got mine at best buy before Christmas. Kids sleep to music and the fact that it lights up doubles as a night lite. They had one also available for just the mix stix....but that one was a dud...Not worth it. Mix max jam stand was a definite improvement.
2) I found the number on the warranty/registration card that came with the mix max. Here it is. Memcorp (954) 660-7026
3) To reset, there's a recessed hole, at the bottom next where you connect the usb cord. Take a pin or needle and push it in. that should reset it. If it doesn't then you have a dud. Hope it helps.
Jess on February 21, 2007 7:14 AM
Rellie when you say if it has the clock problem it is a dud, do you mean it will eventually break down? Or is it just that the clock will never work? I got my nephew his on ebay and I doubt Disney would give me any help or support. If it means the clock will never work well we can live with that. But do you mean it has other problems as well?
I cant afford another, and would hate for it to die so soon. My nephew has just been so thrilled with it.

You must be a pretty smart "cookie" to have found this site in the first place. It took me forever to find it. I know my 5 year old wouldn't have been able to even log-on with out an older persons help-let alone read what she typed and even know that her question wasn't answered. I'm always around when my kids are on the computer, as a "just in case" person. Do you have someone there to help you, too? Asked whoever helped you search for this site. If you can't read the what the above comments say, your "helper person" should read all the "remarks/comments" above or print them out. They should help you to get songs, etc on your player.

I'd be interested in the answer too. We can live with the clock not working right...but, do you mean it will have additional problems? Let's hope not. Glad we got ours pretty cheap. [We too got it on clearance at Target]
We just found this site and it has many great helpful tips! Didn't even need to post my questions. We printed out responses, all of them, and looked through them first. Bingo...my answers were there! Thanks everyone.
Rellie on February 21, 2007 2:28 PM
I should have clarified. What I meant was that the support person I spoke to said that when the clock gets stuck on 5:33, then it is a defective unit. I guess that was the freeze clue....5:33 am. Mine got stuck on 5:33 am and I tried to reset the clock but it wouldn't reset at all. I could have lived with that except that about every so often, it will freeze and I would have to reset. The songs would play then cut out. After a few times of resetting, I figured that it was just not worth tinkering with it about every hour it seemed like. I also just got a pink princess one for my daughter. I have not yet received it and I'm crossing my fingers that it's not a defective unit. Even if I only spent $45.00 on ebay ( brand new factory sealed) then it was $45.00 wasted. If I bought it at a retail store, at least I would or may have some recourse....but that's 20/20 hindsight. For those of you who have the clock problem, I sure hope that that's all it is. Mine extended to freezing quite a lot. My replacement one seems to be OK.
keith on February 21, 2007 2:53 PM
It seems to me that the 5:33 issue would have already been addressed by Disney. But as I have read, their support is very limited.
We also bought the Mix Stand and have been very pleased. Our 1 1/2 yr old loves to listen to the music with the lights off and watch the colors on the stand. She is particularly fond of George Clinton and "We Want the Funk."
It is nice to finally put a name with "Not Telling My Name." =)
It appears that most of the people currently posting have finally determined how to rip and load movies. I urge each of you to enilighten the newcomers as they show up. That keeps one person from having to respond to a dozen people a day. (maybe listing your e-mail address not such a good idea- just kidding I'm glad that I was able to help those I could)
I will state again what Sarah postedonce before. It has been my experience that if you try to rip and encode at the same time, or really do anything else on your computer, the process will not work. Maybe the CPU doesn't understand what to do with all of the files going and coming. I don't know for certain, but it always crashed on me.
I plan on deleting the older version (9.1) and downlaoding the newer version of the Encoder to play around with to learn its ins and outs so that I can help new folks.
It's great to see such positve posts.
Rellie on February 21, 2007 3:20 PM
I just thought of something. It might be worth a try. Disney did not give me a hard time exchanging my mix max ( though it might have something to do with that they have a record of me buying one from them), but the bottom line is that these mix sticks and mix max originated from them one way or another. If it's defective, see if they may exchange it for another one. The worst thing that could happen is that they say no. I almost had to exchange my mix stick for another one because I thought it was defective. The original mix stick jam stand didn't work well and I thought it was the mix stick mp3 player. As I researched, it turned out to be that the jam stand was the thing that had the problem. The usb connections were not too sturdy or tight that's why it didn't work well. They sent me a new one and I sent it right back and kept my old one which is still, btw, working fine. Anyway, Since, so they say, Disney's main priority is to make their customer's happy, then they just might try and correct yours by replacing it no matter where you bought it. What have you got to lose?

Thank you everyone for helping my daughter, Emily with her mix max problems. :) I didn't even relize she was writing this! I have no idea how she even found this website, but I read her the posts that you all put up and thank you all very much. Hello, Emily! It looks like you wrote that you are 5111 years old, lol but I think you were trying to write 5!!!. You can hold 240 songs on a mix max. And like what "friends helping friends" had posted, maybe you should ask a parent to help you, they would probably know what to do and help you get songs on your mix max and such. Emily, you se
