Kingston K-PEX 100 PMP

  • Comments
kpex.jpg

News about Kingston Technology's new portable media player, the K-PEX 100, didn't turn many heads when it was announced in early June, but now that it's actually available through various online retailers, it might be worth another look.

With a 2-inch TFT color screen, these 1GB and 2GB gadgets are more than just the average, run-of-the-mill MP3/WAV/WMA/OGG players that support photos (JPG) and videos (MPX/WMV/AVI/ASF/MPEG 1 & 2). Perhaps to compensate for its rather unattractive (not to mention unoriginal) appearance, the K-PEX offers storage expandibility with optional miniSD cards, FM radio, USB hosting capabilities (!), and up to 17 hours of playback time.

Weighing in at a mere 2.3 ounces, the K-PEX 100 is available now at Buy.com, Newegg.com, and of course direct from Kingston.

crap to the max

Michael on August 8, 2006 9:36 PM

For the features listed, I wouldn't say it's crap. I've seen a lot worse players for the price.

Flav on September 9, 2006 5:46 PM

Kingston is VERY good with flash memory... it might be more reliable than a Server HDD. this is a great player... and 17h of mp3 continous playback? that is really cool.

brian warner on October 20, 2006 12:33 AM

hw abt da sound quality?...dus it sound gud?.....

Steven on November 16, 2006 11:46 PM

Yup, the sound of the headphone is really good...and for external speaker..it's mono and sound is average but still nice :P..I got mine and lOVE IT. I'm glad i didnt buy other mp3 player such as Sony E00 series..well the only thing that I dislike is..the charging takes around 3 hours to fully charged...but the overall quality is good :D

Kamus on November 27, 2006 7:09 PM

Has anybody found games for download that work on this thing. I found it this is just a rebranded Cenix GMP-M6, but I couldn't find any games for that one either. Any ideas?

clement on December 6, 2006 4:21 AM

yup. difficult to find working games that work

Axium on December 25, 2006 7:29 PM

Hmmm. Difficult to find working games that work....well, that sounds about right.

Say, speaking of games, anyone got any info on the games it ships with?

K-pex 100 on December 25, 2006 9:29 PM

Kinda crappy games; cellpone games....And not so good quality games. But everything else is good =)

K-pex 100 on December 25, 2006 9:33 PM

I'm also looking for games for the KPEX. I visited this korean site, CENIX.CO.KR, the cenix gmp m6 is the same thing as the kpex, Kingston only relabeled it. I found some games on this korean site, but wasnt able to download them. So...

Hi All,

I'm looking for a usb cable for my K-pex 100. The connector appears to be a non-standard mini-b. Any one know of an aftermarket cable that will work with this unit?

Thanks
RG

Johnny S on February 18, 2007 5:35 PM

This player is really good for its price. The It's packed full of features. Sadly, one that is missing though is radio recording. I'm still hoping that this is a software thing and that they will add it later. Don't know why they let this one out, considering they went through the trouble of implementing direct WMA encoding.

caroline on February 28, 2007 4:33 PM

i just called kingston tech support, and they said that the company that was gonna make the games for this player backed out, so it may be a while before they can make a deal with someone else. BUMMER. but i got this player for my 16y.o. daughter for xmas, she LOVES it, sooooooo, i had to try it out, and i wound up buying one for myself. i love to read and listen to tunes, and i can do them both at the same time with the K-Pex. btw, can anyone help me speed up the boot time for kpex? or change the boot up pictures? the other nice thing about this player is that you can hook up any computer speakers to it and use it outside so the whole clan can enjoy music at the hot tub and pool.

hugzz to all,

Wow i just bough kpex 100 its really cool. good value for money and u can do quite a bit with it... mayb a problem i found with it is not enough games pre-installed lol. but then again its an mp3 player not a gaming console. it looks like it would b a mini psp lols. game quality isnt great but other features are really awsome.

RT on March 12, 2007 2:57 PM

Excellent media player: it condenses my personal 4.3GB
DVDs to less than 500 MBs. Excellent quality too. WMA
can be converted to MP3 files. I know that I can record
FM stereo from my radio (or Internet) by taking the
3.5 mm cable connected on one end to the earphone
jack and hooking the other end to the in-line of the
K-PEX using the RECORD function can record in WMA
format. Using a utility WMA to MP3, the MP3 conversion
works great under the MUSIC files. If you can afford it,
the Altec-Lansing M604 will fill your room with crisp
clear stereo sound with max. 160 watts of power. The
USB/AC adapters (

Kate on March 13, 2007 8:13 AM

look at cenix gmp-m6, it is same as this kingston k-pex. really.

Yes Kate, Cenix makes the K-pex 100 for Kingston.... Enjoy!

rockdude on March 21, 2007 5:32 PM

hi dudes do you know how to erase the recordings on the K-pex

Freaky on March 23, 2007 4:00 PM

Unfortunatly you cannot, you need to have the device connected to your computer in order to delete the files you dont want.

As for the system itself, if it was possible to link an emulator like on the PSP than this would make this system worth alot more to me. The button configuration is close enough that a emulator for Nintendo NES would be the best really.

atack on March 25, 2007 9:07 PM

Actually if you are in the file manager and have the item selected press the mode button on top and then you can delete whatever is highlighted

RT on March 28, 2007 2:07 PM

Was anyone able to get the games listed at the web site to work? All
I got was a blank screen when I pressed select. The language is
in Russian and maybe I did not download the right file for the K-Pex
100.

Notyu Aviosly on April 11, 2007 6:52 PM

Yeah, they are really nice games. what file were they?

iceberg on April 14, 2007 11:44 PM

Argh! Mine's all buggy. Can't get all the buttons to work... oh, well... back to the retailer :(

RT on April 18, 2007 12:13 PM

Would someone please provide detail instructions (or another web site) to download the following games: Aiolos, Blocks, Godori, Majak, SoulSword and TresureHunter for the K-Pex 100 in English. I have a friend who speaks Russian and says that it has to be downloaded in the English version and it will run fine. Unfortunately he is limited in his Internet access and only has telephone modem speed. The "Immortal" site has various selections and I cannot figure out which selection to choose to properly download the games or the method to use for the downoad to get the games to run correctly.

I know that the K-Pex games that come with the PMP have starter programs which load the games. Does anyone know: Is there a starter program for these web games, too?

Notyu Aviosly on April 21, 2007 12:38 AM

i have found a site with a guy who is making a game called "k-petris" and i have downloaded the beta. from that, i ask the following question:

HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE GAMES!??

Notyu Aviosly on April 21, 2007 12:41 AM

also, anyone here can help post links on here. so, please add links to kpex game websites and any information that you find, k'?

somebody should insert emulators in the software so people can play nes gba (record=R mode=left) and maybe even snes on this thing. you dont have to convert the games, as some people might think, just edit the settings somehow, i cant hack it though cause i dunno how

Roy on June 15, 2007 11:08 AM

Do a reset with a paper clip in the reset hole on the end of the player. There is two holes on the end of the player, check the manual if you are not sure. Then go to the Kingston web site and upload the firmware update file. Then the next time you boot-up the operating system will be corrected. I have not had a lock-up since I installed the firmware. The files are located at Kingston Home Page under Support then K-pex player as the device.

Notyu Oviosly on June 19, 2007 8:36 PM

locked? what kind of locked? there is a locking switch on the bottom XD but if you mean it's frozen, do what roy said.

Jeremy on June 27, 2007 2:14 PM

I'm thinking about buying this thing but im wondering how good the video playback is... first of all, when files are converted to mpx does it change the size or quality? and also does it ever skip when playing video or music from the sd card? i have a micro sd card in my cell phone and it skips all the time, which is the reason i wanna buy a new one

does anyone know of any website or stores i can but accessories for the kingston k-pex? such as an armband for running with. i've looked online and haven't found anything. perhaps an armband you've used yourself and could recommend. anything would be helpful thanks!katie

RT on August 3, 2007 2:11 PM

X - Reference to accessories for the K-pex 100:
This little leather case may work:
http://www.eforcity.com/premium-universal-rugged-leather-case-w-magnetic-flap-large-cothxxxxlc33.html
It says the size is 4.5" x 2" x 1" - K-pex is 3.74" x 1.79" x .57" for $15 plus shipping & handling. Based on this, it should work, but you may have to use a punch to make a hole for the headphone plug. Since you are going to be paying for shipping you may want to get the Universal USB travel charger for another $8.39 to charge your K-Pex without the computer.

Jeremy - Reference to video play back quality. I would say outstanding quality when converting home DVDs!!!

See RT's note dated Aug. 3, 2007 concerning the universal USB travel charger which uses the standard house current. It works fine.

hey guys, can you please tell me what specific type of universal USB TRAVEL CHARGER is compatible with the k-pex 100? i really travel a lot and i find it hard to charge on a computer every now and then.. i just got this awesome player.. please help..

RT on November 16, 2007 2:53 PM

Hey Raymond,
For the Univ. USB Travel charger use this website:
http://www.eforcity.com/dothusbtcad1.html
This one works excellently and
it even has a lite on the back to let you know it has current.
The current price is $6.29 plus shipping.

sars on December 24, 2007 9:15 AM

excuse me but is there any way to transfer files from PC to the kpex without even waiting for the battey to be full?? i mean i have to charge it first to full before i can transfer files... unless of course using the host cable... is there anyway to charge and to copy files at the same time??? it sucks to wait for the kpex to get full... help anyone???

pinkbob on January 2, 2008 3:59 AM

ya, i experience the same thing. once you plug the unit to your pc it does charge the kpex unit first (even it is still fully charged). and it usually takes 3 hours to finish the charging only then you can download files from your pc to your kpex. that's long time.

how can i get youtube videos watched in my KPEX100?

Jeff on January 21, 2009 2:50 AM

@Rico
1. copy the youtube URL
2. go to www.file2hd.com, you can download the video there in flv or mp4 format.
3. convert the video

Rico on January 25, 2009 8:49 PM

convert to what?

Jeff on January 27, 2009 12:34 AM

- convert mp4 to mpx
- mpx is the playable format in your kpex100
- if you can't convert it directly using your transcoder (included in the cd when you bought the unit), you can convert mp4 to avi first using other converter like xilisoft etc... then avi to mpx using the transcoder

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Samsung P3
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 was a success and the P3 is a very welcome and substantial update. Samsung has paid close attention to users on P2 issues and made great strides in addressing and improving most of them. The best feature of the P3 is its native video support. Most content you thow at it will playback without conversion on the great looking screen. Stop by the Samsung P3 forums for more details or check out our indepth P3 review.

  • Microsoft Zune 120
    Samsung P2

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely. Check out our review.
