Creative Zen Neeon 2

creaitive-zen-neeon-2.jpg

Creative has a page up for the forthcoming second release of the Neeon line of players. Unlike some iterations of the Neeon 2 is strictly flash based coming in 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB sizes. The player supports MP3, WMA, and WAV on the audio side and an AVI format that will need to be converted by supplied software. Finally, JPEG is supported on the photos side. The small 81 x 42 x 12.5 mm player manages to squeeze in a 1.5” color CSTN (basically less expensive to make LCD) screen with 128 x 128 pixels.

Other than the larger screen the Neeon 2 doesn’t offer too much more than the recently released Zen V and soon to be released Zen V Plus. Based on how Creative has released MP3 players in the past we probably won’t see this one for another two to three months. You can also expect the price to be in the vicinity, but probably less than similar flash players at their respective sizes.

That's dapreview, not dapreivew ;)

I think Creative is basically updating some of their older lines rather than getting rid of them. the form factor of the original Neeon was closer to the Nano and others than the rounder Zen V. People will complain of the similairities between the two, as well as the controls for this player but I have a good feeling this one will be popular. It has better battery life as well in comparison. Finally, UMS support is a big plus.

bladedah on August 2, 2006 10:44 AM

I do not understand why the dap business do the things they do. This sounds like bad marketing, because it seems like creative is giving consumers too much of the same thing to choose from... from an already oversaturated dap market. This is basically the zen v except better with different-better interface and -looks.

Also, can anyone explain to me why iriver disables the FM tuner for the CLIX wireless cradle? Thank You

quiksliver on August 2, 2006 11:21 AM

Yeah its a crying shame that creative is run by monkeys, because thier products are great.

They REALLY need to axe alot of thier old players

Louis on August 2, 2006 12:37 PM

Gizmodo lists it for more, as in more expensive, than the comparable capacity Nanos. Good deal if you want FM and recording, I guess.

EnzoTen on August 2, 2006 1:59 PM

Gizmodo is a misprint, they listed Singapore dollars. It is indeed less than the nano.

Louis on August 2, 2006 2:03 PM

Correct! The S$309 is actually US$199, so a 4gb model is cheaper by $49 than the similar Nano.

thesam on August 2, 2006 6:59 PM

You forgot about UMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EnzoTen on August 2, 2006 8:31 PM

There is not mention of UMS on Creative's site and it says that Windows XP is required. I highly doubt that creative has implimented UMS on this player. Any mentions of UMS are probably referring to the UMS storage capability not UMS music.

sentient on August 3, 2006 2:10 AM

This player seems to be just what I've been looking for; can't wait for a review on it.

Erik Persson on August 3, 2006 2:39 AM

From the features page... http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=15609&nav=0

" Easy transfer
Simply drag and drop your data files between ZEN Neeon 2 and your computer. No complicated or messy driver installations necessary."

Happy Dance!
The "windows required" probably refers to the encoding required for the avi files.

It even has line-in recording!

Michael on August 3, 2006 4:40 AM

Enzo, a few reasons why I'm guessing it's UMS and mentioned it that way at Dapreview and epiZENter

1.)

For the Zen V Plus it says:
Mass Storage Device: Yes. For data files only

For the Neeon 2 it says:

Mass Storage Device: Yes

Now when you choose to do a a comparison of the two at Creative this is what you get:

Storage Media:

1.) Flash Drive (for Neeon 2)
2.) Yes. For data files only (for Zen V Plus)

Wouldn't "Flash Drive" indicate the fact that its MSC?

2.) The player does not say it supports WMA Protected files (aka DRM files). Wouldn't an MTP player have no difficult playing these? I know with UMS players it can be a little more difficult.

3.) The Zen Neeon line was a UMS player

4.) If this is directed towards an Asian market, it most likely is UMS/MSC. They definitely prefer those to MTP devices.

This evidence isn't certifiable beyond a reasonable doubt, but I'd say the fact that tehy said Flash drive for one and not the other is a good indication of that. . What do you think? I'll be contacting Creative and seeing what they say

EnzoTen on August 3, 2006 6:45 AM

@michael

I think you could be right... Those do look like good indications that the neeon 2 is UMS. I have my fingers crossed. I hope that this is the beginning of a trend for Creative because that is usually my only complaint about thier players. Thanks for the info.

Michael on August 3, 2006 3:01 PM

Ok, I just got a reply from Edvarcl Heng over at CNet Asia and this is what he said:

My preview was conducted with an engineering unit of the Zen Neeon 2. Based on my experience with it, the prototype unit is an UMS device. However, it may not be the case with the final retail unit. I have emailed Creative and will get back to you once I have the answer.

Joel on August 21, 2006 6:19 AM

Does anyone know whether the Neeon 2 will allow users to skip to a particular letter? Cos' its really irritating to have to scroll through dozens of songs to get to the song I want. It'd be great if I could just select "L" and all the songs beginning with L showed up.

Kpnut on October 4, 2006 9:33 AM

Joel, that's why folders were created! ;-)

Their website says the same thing about the ZEN V, too, but the ZEN V is MTP, not UMS.

Hi I just buyed this mp3 player and I really don't want to syc any songs and I really don't want to use windows media player or install the disk that came with the player is there anyway I can just explore it?

Uday on May 1, 2007 9:23 PM

Hi guys,
Neeon2 voice recording. Can it record in stereo?
Thanks,
Uday Shivamurthy

Randy on May 29, 2007 8:28 PM

I bought this a few months ago and I do most of my recording jobs on this tiny player.

On the mic it records in stereo but saves it in WAV
but only at 32 kbps in 8 Khz.
Not much but good for voice recording.

On the Line-in recording it saves it WMA
but there is an option for 64, 80, 96, 128 kbps.
great for plugging it in a mixer.

Sorry no A-B mode
only Normal, repeat track, repeat all, shuffle, shuffle repeat, Track once.

I highly recommend it.

Cons: DRM and prone to scratches.

Top MP3 Players
abi Editor's Choice
  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Samsung P3
    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 was a success and the P3 is a very welcome and substantial update. Samsung has paid close attention to users on P2 issues and made great strides in addressing and improving most of them. The best feature of the P3 is its native video support. Most content you thow at it will playback without conversion on the great looking screen. Stop by the Samsung P3 forums for more details or check out our indepth P3 review.

  • Microsoft Zune 120
    Samsung P2

Sure, many of us are not big fans of the walled garden, but there are a lot of great things going on with the Zune- sturdy hardware, ultra easy to use user interface, and a media player that is worthy of editor’s choice. The best part of the Zune is the constant firmware and software updates virtually giving you a new device at each major refresh. You can check out the latest Zune 120 & 16 review or stop by our Zune forums for the latest.

  • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • Phonak Audéo PFE
    Phonak PFE

Phonak Audéo PFE offer outstanding clarity and precision; natural, dynamic mids and treble, and decent bass for a single armature in-ear phone. They handle dense, complex music very well. The PFE work well with most acoustic and some electronic music genres, but bassheads might have to look at other alternatives. They're great for sports as well, since they fit very securely.
