Toshiba Gigabeat S30 Teardown

gigabeat-s-teardown.jpg

I disassembled the Gigabeat S series for two reasons: to see if the battery is easily replaceable and to see what kind of processor is inside. It turns out that the battery is indeed replaceable with what looks like an off the shelf Toshiba battery. It is fairly easy to get to with the removal of five small screws on the outside and two small screws on the inside. A novice with tiny Philips screw driver should not have too much difficulty replacing the battery. However I wouldn’t recommend going any further, because things get a lot more complicated…

Also check out our indepth Gigabeat S30 & S60 review.

Replace the Battery

  1. Remove five screws: two on the side, two on the bottom and one on the back behind the lanyard hook. When that screw is removed, remove the lanyard hook insert.
  2. Slide the metal backing down as shown in the photo. Then pull it straight up.
  3. Unhook the ribbon connection attached to the metal backing by lifting up on the brown flap where the ribbon is connected. The ribbon will then slide out.
  4. Pull the hard drive back as shown in the photo.
  5. Remove two screws near the bottom of the player. One is on the bottom and one is on the right side near the battery switch.
  6. The battery is now exposed. You can disconnect it by gently pulling on the red and black cables.

Complete Disasembly

The main processor is a Freescale MCIMX31LVKN5.

Does this mean you're done reviewing it?

doug on June 8, 2006 6:09 PM

Great break-down, but are there higher capacity batteries to replace with?

green on June 9, 2006 9:46 AM

Great pictures, many thanks.

Give a full list of chips beside the main processor if you can. Just want to know what audio chip they use in particular. Samsung, SigamTel or others?

RedFro on June 9, 2006 6:53 PM

I'm with Inflatable Dragon on this one...will their be an upcoming review of this player?

Is that eletrical tape I see holding some things down!! Thats pretty cruddy. Correct me if im wrong but is that really electrical tape holding stuff down!! In my opinion the Creative Vision M is built much more solidly internaly speaking with more padding and rubber to protect the hard disk from impact. Plus the ZVM has a lithium polymer battery thats bigger and better than that one.

Hey are you going to try to upgrade the battery on this thing? If you are can you tell us the results?

James on June 27, 2006 7:01 PM

I'm still interested in knowing if there's an actual replacement battery. My unit is dead and no longer under warranty. I have removed the battery and tested. Volt-meter shows no energy levels. Is the battery replacement a dead issue or is there a purchasable battery that works?

Thanks in advance

What about the display it seems that my gigabeat has a backlight problem and cant seem to find a place that can fix it. Would any electronics stores like bestbuy or circuitcity fix it? But i fear it may be more than the MP3 itself...

urmom on October 22, 2006 10:47 AM

I love this mp3 player, pictures look great (I love the way you plug your mp3 and your camera together to transfer your pictures directly), Audio is good (although the EQ is useless), transfer is fast (1200 songs in 15 minutes) and the interface is great. The only thing is the battery life, what type of battery should I use to replace the existing one?

p.s. If you want a gigabeat s, buy it on ebay, I saved $100

Question? Has anyone had sync problems with gigabeat after battery change? After sending unit out for battery change (because of warranty), I am no longer able to sync audio files to the unit (eaudiobooks). Anyone have a similar experience? Anyone have a fix?

steve j on October 29, 2007 4:15 PM

Team,
How do you replace the toshiba gigabeat F40 battery as there seems to be no screws and I am not sure how to get inside?
It turned off one day and I cannot revive it.
Thanks
Steve J

Hello I'm wondering if anyone can help me out there? I think I screwed up big time. I opened my gigabeat to clean the dust under the screen. I couldn't get the lcd component completely out but I blew it out pretty good with and air compressor I did do it carefully. But when i put it together it will turn on but the screen is like a blueish Grey color and it wont boot. I can hear the hard drive clicking but nothing more than that. I tried connecting it to my computer and syncing it with media player. NO LUCk! PLEASE HELP!!!

Marco on January 22, 2008 11:28 PM

hey, just wondering if you knew of anywhere to buy replacement LCD screens for the s30? Mine cracked and the screens just screwed.

Thanks

I also took the gigabeat apart, because my hard drive is apparently no good. Where can I get a new hard drive.

susan on January 25, 2008 9:51 PM

can you tell me if the mini b ports (not sure what they are called and where the cradle attaches) if that can be replaced? I noticed the ribbon attaches but does it easily dissconnect to be replaced?

Chri on February 6, 2008 6:09 PM

I dropped my gigabeat f20 and there is no backlight anymore. I can very faintly see the songs, but I have to hold it up to a light and look at it from a specific angle. Is there anyways I can somehow fix the screen?

Sam on February 19, 2008 4:12 PM

I tried to open up my Gigabeat. I succeeded in that. I took apart the harddrive. I also tried to take apart the whole circuit, but couldn't. After that I put everything together and now, when i turn on the player, the whole screen is grey. It shows the gigabeat icon at first(grey shaded) and then the screen goes completely grey. I am able to connect the player to PC and see the files.... Please somebody help me with the grey screen!!
"Sean P. on November 24, 2007 9:15 PM" ... I believe we have similar issue, were u able to fix your grey screen and if so, how?

Aj on February 21, 2008 12:56 PM

Does anyone know where to buy a small screwdriver that fits into the screws on the gigabeat s?

Younos Aboulnaga on March 5, 2008 8:42 AM

I tried to completely disassemble my Gigabeat S to take out the cracked LCD in a try to fix my newly bought PMP on my own (How could Toshiba sell us out lie that and stop support so soon? Is it all because of Microsucks that can't build a player on its own and thus needed to buy somebody else's very well designed PMP and call it Zune?? DAMN). Anyway.. I couldn't take out the circuit and free the LCD because I can't free the metal chasing over the buttons from the outer frame... how can I do that?

Another thing.. what is the LCD part number? and is there any compatible LCDs available?

parth on March 6, 2008 10:30 PM

Great Blog,
I have a question that people here seem to be tech enough to help me with.
I want to disconnect my GigabeatS30 form my computers usb port but it does not show up under the disconnect harware icon. Typically I wait until a PC shut down to disconnect. Anyone have any tips?
Thankyou.
Bob

    Samsung P2

The Samsung P2 has been gaining quite a following lately and rightfully so. If you are looking for something well designed, innovative, and feature packed; you should look into this full touch screen wonder. The Bluetooth feature set is what I find to be the most intriguing, with the ability to tether to your phone to make calls or wirelessly transfer with no restrictions to other P2s. Check out the review or stop by our ever growing P2 forums to get the latest info.

  • Toshiba Gigabeat T400
    toshiba gigabeat t400

The Gigabeat T400 is without a doubt my favorite flash player at the moment. It does have one major setback in that it only comes in a 4GB, shame on you Toshiba. What makes me love this player is it's ultra slick sexy design, very easy- just pick up and use interface, and killer sound quality that would make Cowon users envious. This player is a must buy for anyone who sports a premium set of headphones. Full review to come but you should really just buy one.

  • SanDisk Sansa Clip
    SanDisk Sansa Clip

The Clip has a fantastic little form factor; cheap in build quality but very rugged. The interface is simple and relatively straight forward. The features on the clip are more or less average, mostly identical to the Sansa Express. However, what earns this player a spot in Editor’s Choice is the superb sound quality; you will not find another player at this size and price that can match it. Read the full review or go ahead and buy it.

  • Cowon iAudio D2
    Cowon iAudio D2

The D2 is a fantastic sounding PMP with a very nice looking screen and a tone of features. One of the best features of the D2 is the SDHC slot allowing you to add another 32GB to this small wonder. The touch interface does not lend well to on the move operation, but it is not enough to keep it from being an editor’s choice. You can find usually find it at Amazon for the best price and before to check out the review.

  • JAYS q-JAYS
    JAYS q-JAYS

The q-JAYS are great in ear phones. They offer excellent clarity, silky treble, realistic midrange, and a nice bass response. They're comfortable, incredibly tiny, and come with a huge selection of accessories. While they certainly are analytic phones, they're still fun to listen to. The q-JAYS respond well to EQing, and can be tweaked to fit almost anyone's sound preference. Recommended for anyone owning a good sounding player and well encoded audio files. Check out our review.
