iRiver clix Review
The Clix is iRiver’s updated version of their U10. Although they share the same form factor the insides are slightly different with a faster processor and a faster easier to use interface. The new Clix also comes with more memory at a better price point than the U10. The U10 is a great player but did not sell too well in the US due to the premium price. Now, the 2GB Clix comes priced competitively inline with high capacity flash players like the Samsung Z5, iPod Nano, and the SanDisk Sansa e200.
Check out the iRiver Clix Forum for discussion and help with the Clix
Quick Specs

- Rated Battery Life: 25 hours
- Other Features: FM Radio, Voice, Line-in (with optional cradle), and FM recording, TXT viewing, Macromedia Lite Support, Games, Date/Time/Alarm, On-the-go playlists.
Accessories
Inside the box you will find the Clix player, standard earbuds with 4 foam covers, proprietary USB cable, carrying case, manual, and software (Windows Media Player 11).
iRiver makes a few accessories especially for this player, like an armband accessory kit which includes a case, arm band attachment, neck strap and screen protector. Additionally, they make a docking station that has features like a wireless remote, line out, line in for recording, built in speakers, and a snooze button so it can be used as an alarm clock.
Design
The player feels solid and is well built from a hard plastic. The design is the exact the same as the U10 but uses a glossy white plastic for the housing instead of a velvet-like finish on U10.
The screen is made of a hard scratch resistant plastic and should not scratch under normal use. This smooth clear plastic face does attract fingerprints very easily especially since you are required to push the ends of the screen for navigation. Contrary to what one may think, this is not a big problem, as they can easily be wiped off with your shirt or the back of the iRiver logo attached to the case which is meant to double as a screen cleaner.
User Interface
It will take you a couple minutes to get up and running with the interface, but after that it is a simple but powerful interface. The menus are fluid, easy to navigate and are pleasing to the eye with little to no lag between transitions. Overall I give the interface high marks being that there is little to improve upon. iRiver pretty much nailed it on this one.
Here is a video of the interface. It is rough and uncut, but it is to give you an idea of how smooth the interface operates.
Almost all of the navigation is handled by tactile buttons located behind each of the screen’s sides. This navigation works well with two hands while the screen is orientated in the horizontal position but also works great with one hand in the vertical position. Dedicated volume buttons are located at the top, with a hold switch on the bottom, as well as power and menu buttons on the right side. The menu button lets you exit from the games and can be programmed for different functions while browsing your media.
Transferring Music
The Clix transfers media though MTP which means you will need a minimum of Windows XP SP1. You can either use Window Media Player 10/11 to transfer files or you can also drag and drop files to the Clix music folder. But again, that this is not UMS drag and drop. Windows XP is still needed and album art is not compatible with the MTP drag and drop method.
I tried to use both “drag and drop” and WMP on the same player and the library got corrupted. Tracks and ID3 tag data disappeared, making the library a big mess. So you will have to use one method or the other to transfer media.
Recording
The iRiver Clix will record FM radio, Line-in (with optional dock), and voice through the built in microphone. What sets the Clix off from the rest of the recording MP3 players is that it will encode at birates up to 256kbps in MP3 format. For the line-in function and FM radio it will record at 64, 128, or 256kbps. For voice it will record at 32, 64, or 128kbps and has gain control for various noise environments.
FM Radio
The radio was as clear as radio gets. But what I found to be most impressive about the radio feature is the interface. It is very easy to navigate though the presets shown by dots on the FM frequency line bar. The auto preset function works great allowing you to skip though all the static.
Games
The Clix is able to play games programmed in Macromedia Flash Lite. The games are mildly entertaining and help kill time when needed, but they are nothing to get excited over. Some games do suffer from slow down on occasion and are slow to respond on the controls. While the games may not be perfect, they do come in handy on time-killing occasions.
Photos
I tested the photos by two methods. For one method I dropped photos right from my 7.1 mega pixel camera to the Clix “Pictures” folder. They all showed up great but there was a typical 3-5 second delay between switching from one photo to the next due to the large file size.
The other method is to run the photos through WMP. This will shrink them to fit the screen and take up less space, fitting about 1000 pictures in about 17MB of realty on the Clix.
Photo browsing is simple and works much like music browsing, where you can create photo playlists and slide shows while music is playing. You can set the slide show interval as well as the type of transition. Overall the Clix is one of the better photo browsers found on an MP3 player.
Video
The QVGA screen is clear and produces colors more accurately, not over saturating colors like other media players. The screen is bright and has 3 levels of adjustment, but like any non-reflective LCD, it will wash out in direct sunlight.
The converted video is played back at 15 frames per second but looks smooth. Using the conversion methods below will result in sharp, virtually no artifact video.
Converting Video
The Clix supports MPEG4 SP so your videos will need to be converted. Windows media player is zero help on this one. I was expecting it to auto convert and sync anything I dropped into the synch list, but of course it did not even try.
iRiver recommends a few different applications to convert video to Clix compatible video. The best one that I used was iriverter which is an open source project that is simple “one click” converting. I was able to easily convert XviD, DivX, and other common file types with iriverter. I also successfully converted a DVD in about the time it takes to watch the DVD on a 3.0 dual core Pentium. It may take some time to convert an entire DVD right from the disc but it is ultra easy.
Audio
The audio sounds very good. Notably, it produces the lower end better than most players. The sound also gets some help from a bunch of preprogrammed EQ settings as well as a custom 5 band EQ, which works very well. The player also has SRS sound enhancements, but I found it to be useless, creating a very unnatural sound with almost any type music.
Conclusion
The Clix predecessor, the U10, was a great little player, but iRiver was swinging for the fences charging $250 for a 1GB U10. But iRiver came back down to earth with the Clix, offering it at a price that matches its peers. If you are shopping for a high capacity flash player you must consider the iRiver Clix for its comfortable eye pleasing user interface and typical but well done feature set.
Even though I give the Clix much praise, it falls flat when it comes to OS compatibility and transferring music. MTP transfers are limited to Windows XP and will only work 100% when Windows Media Player is used as apposed to MTP drag and drop. iRiver can easily fix this by updating the firmware to support UMS drag and drop file transfers.
Purchase
iRiver has pretty good distribution so you will be able to find it at most B&M and online electronic retailers. Check Amazon for a good price.
Pros
- Clean and easy user interface
- Easy video conversion
- Clear video
- Great playlist support
- OGG support
Cons
- Windows XP SP1
OnlyMinimum Requirement - MTP file transfers
- No delete on-the-go

If only there was a 4gb version... and we can only hope a firmware update allows for UMS support. I hope this WMP10-11/Urge/MTP stuff doesn't stop companies from implementing UMS the way they should, but it's starting to look bad. I'll stutter along with my Samsung Z5 for now. Nice screen, though. Good review, thanks.

iRiver announced today that they can no longer compete with iPod and are giving up on the digital media player market. This is the last digital player they will manufacture and instead are shifting their business to focus on their portable WiBro gaming console.

I have read these reports about iriver pulling out of the dap market, NONE of them originate from Reigncom, they have just released the E10, Clix, B10. All these are just reports on Reigncoms financial results.
BUY THE CLIX it is the best flash dap by a mile!

Can I play flashmovies (from newgrounds etc) on this player?
I've never seen this stated clear, only heard it supported flash..

Any ideas when will this be available in the UK and/or if it will be a UMS version (and whether Iriver may even be planning UMS firmware)? I know the UK U10 has UMS but apparently the transfer rate is rubbish
EnzoTen on May 24, 2006 11:08 AM
No ideas on the UK reasease. But, as far as the UMS goes, it may be possible to upgrade to ums by using a different firmware. I know that the U10 is MTP in the US but can be changed to UMS by updating with korean firmware.

Kudos to the reviewer. Taking the time and effort show us a video of how this thing operates really is an extra mile for effort. Good work.
As for this player, being WMP only kills it outright. I don't know why companies try to pawn off that festering pile of DMR bloat on consumers.

Although Iriver could not break Apple's Dictatorship over mp3 player market, Iriver have produced and designed many good mp3 players over the past few years. And Clix is one of the best mp3 player I have seen so far. more fully developed then its previous version U10. personally I have used all most all the ipod generation and many iriver's mp3 players. They have cons and pros however, Iriver was able to pull many useful functions built in its unit unlike ipod (ex. FM radio). Also their battery hours are superior to ipod.
There is no doubt that mp3 player functions is converged to cellphones, pda, and camera. Therefore, iriver is pulling out of the market. BECAUSE ITS OVERCROWEDED. I bet anything... apple must come up with new products beside ipod generation to overcome this...
Sonny on May 24, 2006 2:53 PM
K that is a ridiculous statement.
Apple is not a dictatorship, Apple is a market leader. People are not forced to buy iPods and use iTunes, they use it because they choose to. In case you don't remember, companies like rio, iRiver and Creative all had mp3 players on the market long before iPod, but nobody bought them..
When Apple introduced the first iPod it didn't become a hit because it was made by Apple, it became a hit because it was the best product available and the only product that offered a complete and simple end to end user experience with hardware and software integration.. This integration is still the reason for Apple's continued dominance and the very reason none of these other players will ever be able to compete.
Before the iPod, Apple was a company with a measly 3% marketshare of computers.. The majority of the 50 million plus iPod owners have no real affiliation to Apple, like they do Microsoft. Apple earned their lead fair and square. There have always been choices availalbe, and the masses chose iPod.
And for all who complain about Apple's "closed" DRM, give it up already. Apple's iTunes DRM is no more closed or restrictive than Microsoft's Windows Media Player DRM. In fact, competing services that use WMP DRM are actually more restrictive than iTunes in the sense that they are Windows only and won't work or provide support for Mac OSX at all. At least iTunes is cross-platform.
Apple created a seamless hardware and software experience. Why should they have to share it? Nothing is stopping the competition like Sony and Creative from doing the same. Apple has always been a systems company. Hardware AND software is their nitch, they design and provide support for the whole user experience. Macs and OSX. iPods and iTunes.. Get the picture? It is there way of doing things and always has been, if you don't like it, then buy something else, nothing is stoping you.
Just stop calling them dictators because they've developed an extremely succesfull product system. They've earned their lead in the portable player market fair and square. It's a system that struck a chord with the masses. Kudos to them.
Oh yeah, and if you've bought music from iTMS and want to put it on another player besides iPod, the simply burn a cd and import it into your player of choice. No big deal.
Jeremy L. Robillard on May 24, 2006 6:53 PM
I have been thoroughly researching the DAP market for a year, and have been disappointed by most players. By now, I know the majority of the players and their stats. I know this may seem a little obsessive, but I am a well informed consumer. If only we could mix the styling and ease of control of an ipod, with battery life and self replacement options from sony, codec coverage from iaudio, the playback feature of the Rio Karma and the screen from the creative zen. If anything the DAP market needs some standards, and a little more time to get smarter.
I am still looking for a large HD player; however, the Clix is the closest DAP I have seen, thus far, to be a best of most worlds. It has a good screen, solid battery life, innovative control, not great codec coverage, but it does play Ogg, and style to boot. I am going to purchase this player, for an all around portable player I will have with me at all times. Take it from someone who has watched the market everyday, and become a little obssessed with the DAP world: this is worth purchasing even it iriver will not be around for ions -regardless, most people will not have a single player for more than 2-5 years, and by that time there will be a whole new line of players available. Moreover, the market may show more standarized DAP's in regards to features in the future, and will likely by a bit smarter.
Also, great job on posting the video. Hands down, the best and precise review. I got a feel for the player without ever having directly in my hands!

You know what? Korean customers want to buy Clix because Clix is the advanced version of U10 and it's much cheaper. But it's not sold in Korea. What a pity! You guys can even get the cradle free of charge. It's a kind of privilege. INVU
iPod didn't succeed in Korea because of iriver and other Korean manufacturers. There are few things to do with iPod compared to U10 or other players. You may not be able to judge which is better until you use both of them. The proof of pudding is in the eating. ^^

Hi guys:
I wanted to respond to some of the comments in this review - particularly about MTP and the Clix. I was a member of the Microsoft team that cooperated with iriver/Reigncom on the development of the Clix.
Firstly, 1) the U10 does not support album art, and 2) the Clix will not support UMS. Most devices when plugged into an operating system appear as that device, not as a disk drive (unless they actually are a disk drive). UMS is not an intuitive or user friendly means to get content on to a device for many people, and doesn't support DRM. Sure - lots of folks don't like DRM, but without it the record labels won't let any of us purchase music online, so we need to live with it. MTP enables the Clix device to look like a media player in Windows, enables pictures and music to be seamlessly sync'd in WMP11 and enables DRM'd content to be transferred. Also, MTP is being standardized as a public standard in the USB-IF, so while almost all music players support it today, more will in the future.
There was a comment about Apple's "closed" DRM and Microsoft's DRM mechanism being equally as "closed". I would only point out that Windows Media DRM is licensable and any application developer keen to create a player for the Mac that plays back Windows Media DRM content, could do so. Unfortunately, that isn't the case for Fairplay - which is carefully controlled by the folks down in Cupertino - and so that is why many folks have commented on the "closed" ecosystem that is the iPod-iTunes play. When compared to the multitude of devices, services and mobile handsets in the PlaysForSure ecosystem (or coming soon), the popular alternative is indeed, closed.
Regards, Dave.
chammi on May 26, 2006 7:12 AM
In response to Dave, power users need an option for transferring music onto their players. I agree that UMS is not the sexiest way to get information onto your DAP, but it's not really that difficult if you're already familiar with USB flash drives. I think providing support for NON Windows users is more important. While it's true that Windows is easily the dominant OS, not all of us have a recent version of Windows or are willing or able to purchase a licensed copy just for the sake of DAP compatibility. I don't like the way the DAP and OS markets are converging. Ultimately, it seems too much like a way for MS to maintain its foothold. I think that you'd agree that MS has been throwing a lot of money into WinMedia and DRM and it's obviously because they see digital media as a cash cow. I don't have a problem with MS looking for new markets. That's what any company would do. But as a consumer, I want the freedom to use my DAP on any computer that I happen to be near...even if it's *gasp* running Linux, Mac OS, or a legacy version of Windows. I use all of these regularly, and I expect my DAP to keep pace with me.

DLF on May 31, 2006 6:39 PM
In response to Sonny,
The only kudos most dominant market leaders deserve should come from Wall Street suits for their superior skills at marketing hype. As you point out, several companies made digital audio players before Apple (incl. Rio, whose players had a superior user interface AND feature set, but let down their users on hardware build quality). Several online stores sold music before iTunes ever existed, and several software jukeboxes are better than iTunes to this day. If Apple can be credited with ANY product savvy at all that's not pure corporate B.S., it's that they integrated things that were JUST GOOD ENOUGH at just the right time (when the RIAA had started to sue people). I'm sure that kinda thing impresses a lot of people (just like the weekend box office receipts and weekly Neilsen ratings impress upon them what to watch), but it doesn't mean s*** to me.
But you're absolutely right, they're most definitely not a *dictatorship* and nobody's forcing us to buy a damned thing. Thank you, God.

michael on June 3, 2006 12:42 PM
Are any US retailers going to pick up this product soon? I hate ordering stuff on-line and prefer purchasing it someplace where I can immediately take it home with me and also quickly take it back, if a problem arises.
So far, none of the Best Buy, Circuit City type places carry it and most when asked are clueless.
If iRiver wants to be an iPod competitior, it's to their advantage to get their product on store shelves immediately (right next to those over priced/underfeatured pods) rather than going through amazon.com.

I agree with Michael completely. I had been waiting to buy the Sandisk
Sansa for about six months when it finally was released in stores. I
bought it and after a week and a half, it malfunctioned and had to be

twice a day, seeing if the Clix is available in stores. They say good things
come to those who wait, but after the Sansa debacle, I'm not sure if that
sounds too good.

I don't know if David is still monitoring this thread, but I'd SURE like to hear some follow-up on those questions.
Drag and drop is not an intuitive way to load music onto a device? Really? If people don't know how to drag and drop files to folders, it seems like they're going to have difficulty using Windows in general. I think having to navigate through Windows Media Player is not likely to be intuitive for some customers. It certainly feels tedious to me some of the time.
I've seen many, many users with extremely low experience levels with this stuff take advantage of mass storage capabilities, to pass files between computers (including between Macs and Windows). By disabling all UMS features, that's now impossible on the newest devices. Can you explain why that's a *good* thing?
I'd also like to challenge this assertion that MTP / PlaysForSure could work on any operating system other than Windows. I'm not a media player software engineer here, but I actually HAVE spoken to people who are who couldn't find a way to get DRMed content to play on Windows or Mac. This sounds like this would be a really massive job if it's technically possible at all. Now, David, you'd know a lot about exactly whether this is possible, so if you're still out there, I'd love to hear an argument for why anyone could license a player on Mac. Given that Rhapsody and Napster have tried porting to Web browser versions, it sure seems like they'd be interested -- my sense is that it's not practical. I'd love to be wrong.
In the meantime, I'm going out to buy a U10. I've been burned by bad experience with MTP, and I'm not wasting my money on a device that I can't use in the cross-platform world in which we all live.

Hi guys:
Yup - still following the thread, just was offline for a couple days. And great discussion by the way - always happy to respond to questions, comments, challenges, etc... :)
Firstly the comment by Chammi about power users. I think we'd all agree that most people on here are power, or semi-power users. And yes - we "get" how this stuff works and we automatically associate a DAP plugged in and appearing as "G:\ - iriver XXX" to be our music player.
But, frankly building a player to cater for this market and ignoring the masses who don't automatically make that connection and who expect to see an icon for a music player that looks like their device (and is labeled as such - not as a disk drive), probably isn't real smart.
Those of us that have been in this industry for a while understand that DAPs are just portable storage and before Windows had a way to differentiate these devices, they just appeared as disk drives. But think - would Apple have ever done that? Would they have ever labeled an iPod that plugged in without an iPod icon, just with a "G:\". No. And this is to speak nothing of DRM'd content - much of which simply can't be transferred with UMS.
Let me also make a comment about MTP - while developed by Microsoft, it is and always has been freely available to implement on devices (as evidenced by the multitude of devices that support it) without royalty or fee. Further, Microsoft is presently submitting this technology to the USB-IF for standardization as a global standard because of the demand for this protocol. As I think I said in an earlier post, there is no reason why anybody couldn't go and build an MTP host for the Mac, and I know there is an implementation for the Palm Treo phone too (the Palm OS one, not the Windows Mobile one).
In response to Peter - lets differentiate between the protocol and implementations. MTP is capable of all that UMS is, and then plenty more. Allowing a device to enumerate it's capabilities (vs. UMS where the OS has to examine the contents of a device), allowing control of the device, support for all kinds of DRM, support for firmware updates, MTP is file system agnostic, etc... are just some examples. I think, though, you raise some good points as to the _implementation_ of MTP.
Drag and drop is a very intuitive way to get content on to a device, and MTP fully supports this. So does WinXP+WMP10/11 with what we call the "shell extension" - double click on an MTP device and you can drop files on it just like UMS. You don't need to be in WMP to transfer content - only DRM'd content, which you can't transfer with UMS in a drop/drop manner anyhow.
Additionally, Microsoft doesn't *require* that vendors entirely disable UMS support on devices in order to achieve the PlaysForSure certification - just that UMS, if supported, must either be automatically switched on the device (so less experienced users don't have to face a choice of which protocol to use) or found in a "safe mode" for device recovery purposes. Any device implementation which goes further than this and, for example, doesn't support UMS at all - is a design decision of that particular vendor.
As for Peter's comments about DRM on other operating systems - absolutely. Motorola and Microsoft made announcements earlier in the year at 3GSM about support for Windows Media DRM on some of their media phones (which don't use an MS OS), and Nokia has made similar announcements even earlier. Very few devices run Microsoft OS's in the DAP market - and most support WM-DRM. Could someone license WM-DRM and build a Mac player? Absolutely - I suspect the reason they haven't is that iTunes pretty much has that market wrapped up. But could it be done? Sure.
Oh, and while I can't go into specifics about what the license fees are - lets just say that any such fees would never be a barrier to entry for such a potential player.
There are plenty of web browser based music stores that sell WM-DRM'd content, but they all use a small downloaded app to actually issue the licenses. The reasons for that are functions of how WM-DRM works, and isn't worth going into here - but certainly web based music stores (that would work on Macs or PCs - which a separate downloaded app for each platform) could definitely work. See music.msn.com, buymusic.com, etc... Again though, I suspect market forces have dictated why there isn't a big Mac play here, not the technology.
David McLauchlan (MSFT) on June 4, 2006 7:10 PM
Oh - and I forgot to answer the question from Michael about big box retailer support for the Clix.
The answer is - absolutely. You'll see at least two major retailers in the US stock the Clix very, very soon. There've been a couple hiccups - were it not for which the Clix would probably already be there.
BTW - we had a small ship party last Thursday night to celebrate finishing the Clix. The iriver boys came up to Redmond and we kicked back with a few drinks and stories. While they're as keen as anyone to see the Clix in brick and mortar retail, they're absolutely stoked with online sales so far - here's hoping this continues once it hits Best Buy and the like.

hi guys! can you tell me when iriver will release the clix in europe, especially in germany? I need a new device because I sold my igp 100 few days ago... (damn! I expected the clix would be available but there is no information about the launch in ger - so now I'm without music :-()
ps.: forgive me for my simple english ;)
a_ferret on June 8, 2006 11:09 PM
Just wondering if a lack of UMS support means that no non-music files can be stored on the device.
On another note, i am sad that iriver is?/has?/will? (go(ne)) out of business or at least stopped making new mp3 players. (shakes fist at iPod and commercialism and brand names, and uneducated consumers, and restrictions, and marketing... and uh... well i think thats enough)

To a_ferret> My Clix came in from Amazon last week and I confirmed Dave M's comment that you can drag-N-drop music, JPEGs, and AVI videos from Windows Explorer straight onto the appropriately labelled folders on Clix icon.

"I'm not wasting my money on a device that I can't use in the cross-platform world in which we all live"
I don't think I live in your world. Cross-platform in MY world means compatibility across multiple DAPs.
I use Z/OS, unix, linux and Windows on a daily basis, but I don't see the need to keep song repositories across multiple OSes. However, I do love to compare gadgets and get whatever hardware works best for me. In Steve Job's world everyone uses an iPod. If I buy his device I can only use his music store. If I buy music from him I can only use his device. That is autocratic if not dictatorial to me.
(And btw burning CDs and re-ripping does NOT count as an alternative, coz it works equally on all DRM, FairPlay or PlayForSure. And I don't understand how folks who complain about lack of drag-n-drop, can suggest burning CDs in the same breath.)
David McLauchlan (MSFT) on June 10, 2006 8:16 PM
Thanks Cuban8 for posting your findings re: drag'n'drop. To follow up on a-ferret's comments - sure you can drag and drop non-media files on the device as well in Windows Explorer. No problem.
In fact, I use mine to carry important docs from my My Documents folder as well as my music/pics/videos.
Also, there have been many comments on here about iriver going out of business. Don't believe all you read and certainly don't expect that buying a Clix will destin you to a life of support-less Clix usage. My personal opinion is that if they keep churning out awesome quality products like the Clix, they will be around for a long while yet...

I think it is worth pointing out that about one and a half years ago Apple bought iriver. This took place after they released the H series. Despite this it does not mean that apple is now creating iriver devices, they are still run under their own people. Anyways i just thought i would clear up your debate you had early.
All the best,
James

Hi guys, does anybody know whether Iriver will be releasing a 4gb or 6gb version of the Iriver Clix in the near future?...
Matt H. on July 3, 2006 5:25 PM
I purchased the iRiver Clicks 2Gb about a month ago now from Mwave.com $189.11 no sales tax.
I love almost everything about it, all my friends with iPods are jealous. My brother actually returned his iPod Nano with no video that he paid over $200 for and purchased a clicx too. It is the perfect size and the interface is great.
You can transfer any files to the player through the icon in "My computer". The only thing that sucks is you cannot transfer album art unless you use Windows media player to sync you music. I locked up during a transfer once and I did have to use a paper clip to clear the flash memory and rest defaults but wasn’t a big deal at all.
The battery lasts a really long time I use it all day everyday at work for MP3s or radio. The radio works perfect and picks up more channels than my car radio. You can browse all the menus while still playing MP3s but not radio.
I didn’t think I would use all the extra features, but I do. The video playback is great, I have actually converted a few TV shows from DVD and watched them on it when I was really bored. The iriverter “http://iriverter.sourceforge.net/” actually decrypts DVDs and re-encodes them on the fly and really fast. You can also pretty much convert any video file but I had problems with MWV.
Not only can it play flash games but you can download almost any flash file and play it back. The only drawback, which really sucks, is if the flash movie requires you to hit a play link you cannot b/c iRiver does not have any way to click it and start the movie, if it‘s a swf that auto plays it works great, if it is too big and complicated though it will be choppy. I played a few homestarrunner.com episodes fine.
Believe it or not I actually use the built in text reader too, just copy any txt file to it and you can use it to read a book while listening to music so you don’t have to carry a big paper back book around.
It has a great shuffle options that does not seem to repeat the same songs like iPods do. You can record radio or voice directly to mp3, you can even browse the file system on the device to a specific folder and file then play whatever media type from there.
I just wish it had more space like maybe 4gb and the fact that you can move around on any SWF file but not click it is annoying but more than any other player will do.

ipods = idiots
apple is successful becase people with less than pigeons brain like being spanked by apple again and again and again..
they are so ignorant that don't even know other mp3 players exist. its because of mass advertisements by apple. do u see any other mp3 players advertising so much? apple knows ipods are just pretty looking, that's all there is to it, so they must find a way to fool people and that is keep them in the dark, and excessive ad campaign.
its faken annoying everyone bashes msft for bundling IE and WMP. but nobody has problem when apple forces people to buy overpriced hardwares from apple. even when they force people to buy music from itunes and ituens only. apple should be tried in crminal court before microsoft. at least MSft is not forcing people.
die apple die.
ipods are pathetic excrements for people like trying-to-find-"ANY KEY"-to-press.

It is very doubtful that iriver will update to UMS drag and drop according to some inside sources.
The e250 has quite a few bugs to work out... wait to see what happens to they release the next firmware in the next few weeks. One of our forum moderators is speaking directly to SanDisk so we will know first in the forums.

FYI
The coupon "1M30TR" for -30$ does not work with the bundle. The web site will add the coupon but you will get an e-mail telling you it has been removed and you will be charged full price.
Hello,
This bundle is already at the savings price. The bundle details specifically state "This special bundle offer can not be combined with any other coupons or discounts. Limit 5 iriver clix - 2GB and cradle bundles per customer."
This offer bundle offer saves you $40 as opposed to the $30 coupon.

i also ordered iriver clix (2GB) +cradle bundle for 240 - 30 coupon discount
they never notified me nor gave me an option if i still wanted to buy it for 240 or cancel the order,,
so i ended up calling my credit card company n they told they i can dispute the overcharged amount of 30 dollars
oh yea,, i did try to call iriveramerica to resolve this but they refused to give me credit
neways i love this player,, personally i have 5 different mp3 players,,
iriver flash type 3 years old 256 mb one
Ipod G4 20 G ( my sis threw it away cuz its lcd was broken,, i fixed it by replacing lcd)
pqi mPack 800 ( 80GB so far the best PMP with feautures (its go dual processors)but its quite bulky n heavy
1gb generic flash type mp3 player
2 gb Irver Clix
IMO Iriver Clix audio quality is the best(as good as my mpack800),,
i got this player for 2 reasons
1.flash based type which means i can take this to gym ( u can mess up HD based type mp3 player easily)
2. superior audio quality that no other mp3 players offers
(this mp3 player reminds my of my Audigy X-Fidelity Soundcard on my desktop
cuz it turns rdinary mp3 file n plays it @ wonderful quality)
even though Clix offers all these nice feautures,,
if u really seek after superior quality music playback,,
Iriver is IT!!

How long will the iriver clix will last good? Meaning how well people will be pursuaded to purchased it and keep using it for at least 3 years without breaking it or for other reasons? Worth it in general for most but for how long will it suit people's taste and especially for the inconvenient competitors as such as ipod........How would I know that iriver doesn't plan to come up with a 4 gig space flash drive or simply as an physical upgrade like a portable flash memory in hand extras or simply abandoning the 2gigs clix then pay more for a newest i clix with more space flash drive??? YOu know like cell phoneS which are coming out differently or simply similarly to a model depending on the company! Add this, upgraded this and spend more for this becuz one thing extra addedd to an electrical gadget..... technology can be a ripp off sometimes or most of the time for those who are on a budget but loves techno..... Please comment on this to help me figuring out what to do and what to buy or if i should wait?:)

all, i just picked up this DAP based on comments from this site and other sites that reviewed it. this DAP is killer. it has all the functionality that a flash-based DAP should have and then some. i travel alot and hate using my laptop to watch movies and tv episodes on long flights. the clix plays these back flawlessly. i'm not sure what people's beef is with 15fps. on a 2.2" screen it is great. i've had this thing for about a week now and have no compaints.
best buy has it on sale this week for 179. at that price its a steal. check your local walmart to, they are starting to carry them. this won't topple the ipod for the top spot due to the market share that apple has, but for anythingbutipod this is the best flash-based DAP for the money.
i'm sure they'll come out with 4 and 6 gb versions. hell at that point throw this one on ebay and get $100 for it and upgrade. no worries...
cheers.

I have several questions: First, how can I transfer photos? Will i be able to move them from CD right to the IClix folder without using WMP?
Also, how many songs/photos/videos does 2 gb translate into?
Brad Twitty on August 23, 2006 12:14 AM
I bought a clix last week from Best Buy and I am not returning the unit. The only reason I am returning it is because it is way too small (storage). 2GB, I just wasn't thinking when I bought it. 10 CDs, a few video podcasts, and you are done. I have an URGE subscription and since I can have all I want, it really makes me want more storage. Toshiba Gigabeat S, here I come.

Hey Everyone!
I've never used an MP3 player before. I was getting tired of the cd player I was using so I decided to invest in an MP3 player. After reviewing all the different MP2 players out on the market, I decided on the IRiver Clix. I LOVE IT! I was able to download 16 cd's onto it and pictures from my last vacation and have only used 1 GB. The transfer process was easy for both the music and the pictures. I love the graphics and especially the sound quality. I would highly recommend this to anyone. The only problem I haven't figured out is how to download the album art to the song list. If anyone knows, I would appreciate someone forwarding my the "how to".
Also, I'm amazed how much reception the radio gets. At times, I get more stations on the Clix than I do on my car radio.

how and what kind of videos can you put on there??
need a reply.
bsilver on October 15, 2006 12:41 PM
^ you can put any videos on there, but they have to converted using BADAK or iriverter. It takes like 4 minutes to convert a 30 minute tv show.
Now, I must say that this player is a real dream come true. I have the Z5 too, but it is missing a lot of things my very first mp3 player had, like FM radio, voice recording, and custom EQ. Iriver Clix solved all that, with video playback on top of it! And the sound quality is better than iPods, the screen is the best screen on an mp3 player out there (im serious, its the best screen), and video playback is very sharp and smooth at 15fps, i see no difference compared to a 30fps that is used on tv.
This is the Ipod killer. it has innovative design too...i love how the screen is the navigational button.

matt on November 4, 2006 8:03 PM
just bought it and its great. the firmware update for mts transfer is inevitable. ignore sonny's apple-loving posts. consumers shouldn't feed into the dominant market share just 'because'. the clix does everything and anything better than the apple nano out of the box as is. this should be the reason enough to purchase.

hey, i just started reading all of your comments just today nov 15 and i started from the top to bottom. you guys got some pretty good comments and ideas. but it comes down to features, looks, innovation, easyness or Great GUI, and price. ipod nano vs. iRiver Clix. ipod nano has 4/5 including looks, innovation, easyness, and price. ($199.99). which is good and all but. iRiver gets a 5/5 including features, looks, innovation, easyness, and price ($199.99) guess what we can now make it official that the CLIX 4GB model is the ipod killer. with better features including video, pictures, fm recordablility, voice recorder, etc etc... at the same price point and GB. Apple is in some serious Shit. because it is being hit at all points with the iRiver Clix 4 GB and Microsoft's Zune. But people are still people and ipods do have 80% market share but we are really just getting started arent we. What i mean is that we had to wait a few years for newer technology to come along so we could get this Clix 4 gb model. and now that microsoft is in the market i think apple will fail if not this Christmas probally next Chrismas when the Clix is better and Microsoft turns into a handheld portable gaming machine. But we never know what apple might have in store with the billions made off of the ipod. But they still dont have as much money as microsoft. iRiver Clix 4 GB with the black back and not the white back is still going to be awesome and i will be buying sometime before X-MAS.

could someone report on the speed of the 4gb version. I have the 2gb and if I let the backlight go dark and then push a button, it takes like 5 to 10 sec to turn back on and allow me to make any changes. this is probably my only gripe with the clix
jells on November 29, 2006 9:08 PM
My main concern with getting this is physical durability. I have a Rio Cali carabinered to my beltloop all day feeding me netcasts and audiobooks while I bang around my workshop. It's held up but with some major screen cover dings. I was going to get a Nano and an aluminum case before I discovered this site.
What's covering the screen? I presume if it took a hit it will crack. I would have to machine a custom case with a thick polycarbonate screen for this thing, but figuring out how to control it through a case will be quite a project. does the whole front of the case rock when you push the corner?

Hey everyone, I really want to get one of these babies but I was just wondering if you guys could help me with three things
1. I read that the iriver never actually turns off? Is this true and what does this do to the battery life?
2. Is this better than the Creative Zen V Plus in terms of audio quality, radio reception, data transfer?
3. I'm not really sure what UMS/etc types of data transfer is...can you use this MP3 player using drag and drop? If not is it a hassle putting music onto the player?
Thanks so much in advance!
fahmeed on December 3, 2006 12:07 PM
Donny
1 It can easily turn off by a button on the side of it
2 never use the zen
3 i always drag and drop music, videos, and games
Nodspy on December 4, 2006 8:58 AM
The whole front of the clix moves when you click but very very little.
The speed of the frimware on the 4GB I find to be fast with no delays.
It is better than the zen (bigger screen, the radio reception is better than my home or car radio, dont know about the data transfer tho but the clix is really fast (i put 2gb of video on it in about a minute) use iriverter to convert the video for clix (its easy to use and is pretty fast.
Now all I need to know is if their are any kickass accesories for it. I know about the cradle but is their anything else (dose the clix do video out with a cable or something?)

I'm thinking of buying the 4GB model - but I want to know this:
A)Is this still a flash drive? Originally I was thinking of buying a larger mp3 player (like 20G) but I want to be able to jog/run with this and not worry about skipping or breaking.
B)Is iriver the best vs anything else that's not ipod? I like the radio feature for variety...but what I really care about is that I want the most storage and the least amount of glitches and no skipping/breaking when I run.
Thanks!!!
Matt on December 6, 2006 2:51 AM

It is a flash drive 2gb with white back and 4gb with black back. Well if you are thinking of getting a hard drive player. You might want to reconsider. unless you are planning on storing like thousand of cds and videos. But for me I think having 2-4 videos and about 1000 songs is more than enough for me and Pcitures and Flash based games with 13 free downloads on their website. iRiveramerica.com. Hard drives will eventually be replaced by the non skipping, Jogging safe, workout safe, flash players, right now were only at max 8 gb players but by this time next year we should be seeing 10-12 gb players. and eventually 20-30 gb players which would be in like 4-6 years or so. But to me personally I don't like going through thousands of music on my hard drive player it takes to much time. To your B question. iRiver is as of right now the best flash based media player. It would also be the best hard drive based media player if they made one. But they don't so If you or anyone is considering a hard drive for some kind of reason. (only reason for most people is because they want to store all their dvds and cds and thousands of pictures and podcasts) I would suggest getting (And I have done alot of research on all media player) The Creative Zen vision: M For hard drive people and iRiver Clix for Flash drivce people. Trust me you won't be dissappointed. Thanks

you apple people must be very brave or very stupid to try to put the ipod in good light at a site called ANYTHINGBUTIPOD.com ... seriously... go somewhere else and talk about how great you think your ipod is! and keep telling yourself that i-pod, i-tunes, i-dock, etc, isn't the absolute lamest series of names for overpriced under-featured products EVER!
i believe iriver existed first and all of a sudden apple comes along and starts putting an i in front of everything!? whats with that? if you want to try to convince me that another device made by a company like sony is better then i will listen but when i come across comments from people who feel it is their duty to swarm across the web and defend their ipods at sites like these it ticks me off. I don't want to hear about the ipod because i am not going to buy it no matter what you say! if this were my website i would be very tempted to delete your posts, but half of them just wind up making the ipod look dumber anyways, so hey, whatever.
Gooodbye, I am going to buy the clix. ;)

I just bought the 2GB Clix. Looks awesome. Can't wait to convert and watch some episodes of the Simpsons. Wanted the 4GB model, but they don't sell it in stores in Canada yet and I won't order it online. I can't believe some of the stupid messages left buy iPod fan-boys. The iPods are so overrated it isn't funny. My aunt just bought the 80GB iPod Video for my uncle for Christmas and he doesn't even have FM reception on it. You have to pay extra for that.

Hello, I have just bought a 4GB Clix and it is really great. There is nothing about the device that I do not like and I am rather critical from time to time (depends very much on the manufacturer).
It is fun to use it every day, the wallpaper color changes at midnight, telling you, that you have been working late at night again. The user interface is intuitive and convincing, even if there are some minor mistakes in the German localization (the English version is OK).
Yes, it is also great fun watching videos on this device, unless you like romantic comedies and do not go for speedy action thrillers. But it is really worth to give it a try.
For the European market you should have a look at irivernordic.com. They are very friendly and will be shipping the device from Sweden, which means you do not have to pay any extra income taxes for the EU. Yes, it is rather expensive, but that's Scandinavia.
There is one thing that is not very much stressed by the iRiver marketing: the Clix supports Adobe Flash Lite 2.0 (including loading and parsing of XML) which might be interesting for developers.
By the way, I do not recommend to use the Windows Media Player 11 Beta which comes with the device, but to use WMP 10 instead which will work as well. There are some minor differences regarding the presentation of the Clix in the Windows Explorer, but you will be able to copy whatever content you want onto the device (yes, also without opening the WMP).
The problem with the Windows Media Player 11 Beta is that it demands full administration rights for the Internet connection which is not recommended because of security aspects. WMP 10 works with user rights, even if you make the connection to the Internet which I do not.
The sound is fantastic and I really like the user interface as well as the reduced and cool appearance of this device. Go and buy it, I think you will not be disappointed.
Merry X-mas iRiver!

Great quality of display, U can send music, etc. using explorer or wmp, U can the same time browse music like in ipod - but of course u have normal folder browser es well like in old series ihp100 or 300!! 10/10 - in 6, 8 GB version - PLEASE! This player is better then i thought.

To get the album art. When you are in your music library right click on the spot where it says paste album art here. A list of things will appear such as find album info click on it. Windows media player will search an find the album. Once it's found click on it and it will be in your library. To get it on the player delete the song off and then click and drag it back on.

What’s up everyone? I have been down Iriver for sometime now. I brought the Iriver ifp series 899. I then brought the T10, U10 and now I have the Clix 2g. I’m now looking to upgrade again as my player is full. I brought all from Best Buy as they offer the 2y extended warranty/upgrade program. I have noticed Best Buy don't have the Clix 2g on there website any more and currently don’t have the Clix 4g and I was wondering why?
Second question I'm also thinking about maybe getting the Samsung K5. If you had to compare the Iriver clix 4G to the Samsung K5 4G. Which would out do the other and why please explain?
Thanks

I LOVE my Clix. I wanted the 4GB, but I couldn't find it in Canada yet and I'm not going to order from the US. The first thing I did was rip the first 6 episodes from season 1 of The Simpsons. Even though the screen is only 2.2 inches, it's very sharp. Well done, iriver !!!

Do yourself a favour and upgrade the firmware from iriver's site. That way you're not shackled to WMP.

A friend of mine has this Iriver Cilx 4G this thing is CRAZY. WE downloaded, songs, games and movies in matter of minutes. It's mad crystal clear. The sound is amazing. Who ever is not down with the Clix is foolish. This is by far the best MP3 on the market. My Ipod Nano is history.
Ralph on January 5, 2007 4:37 AM
I like everything about this player except that the battery life isn't what I expected. 25 hours doesn't seem realistic as so much battery power is taken by the screen (superb quality). Since I like to scroll a lot and jump songs the screen is activated a lot of the time which reduces my batterylife. Combine that with a little video en it lasts just 2 days (without constantly playing), not such a big deal really but my former Iriver lasted 40 hours (about a week without charging) so I have to adjust.
Besides that this player rocks and I don't believe that the ipod lasts longer playing video and music.

I was just wondering what the deal is with the Clix's battery. I'll be listening to it on the bus etc during the day on monday, leaving me with 2/3 of my batterylife as it indicates. But tuesday evening when I go out and I want to listen to my Clix the battery is completely flat, while it just sat there all day, not being used, in the off position. It just loses batterylife when it's turned off, that's not really very good. As it is now I'm charging my clix more than listening to it.

I have the 4gb clix and love it, BUT... same problem as Ralph on Jan 22: I can't get it to give me more than 4 hours of music after 4 recharge cycles on my computer!! And, it will have 1/3 battery remaining showing after only 3-4hours use. So I turn it off. Next time I turn it on after overnite being off, it will now show that it needs recharging!! What's happening here? It seems to be discharging when off! Could I simply have a defective battery? I bought it thru Amazon - how do I return it? Thru the Amazon dealer? Please help - thanks, goranbev@yahoo.com

I think the 25 hours is calculated playing music without skipping tracks so the screen stays darkened all the time. Cuz such a bright screen demands a lot of power. Developers of mp3 players are often very optimistic when they calculate the batterylife. I sent my commens to iriveramerica support but I don't know if they'll answer.

When I added it all up, the negatives outweighed the positives.
No MSC support.
No user replaceable battery.
Battery gets drained because it takes a day to actully shut off.

Aw, I wish they would sell the iRiver Clix more prevalently in Canada.
However, the iRiver Clix2 8GB is coming in April...a month away...in the US, I shall be able to order it as soon as its available. I want it so bad, the colours on the screen seems to 'pop'...it will be so worth the wait and the money.
1. Does anyone know if iRiver Clix and Clix2 have the ability to store random files on board? Like zip files...and I hear both are flash drives. Or MS Word documents which you can transfer on to another computer?
2. Does it install a new removable drive on every foreign computer you use? I had problems with the Creative Zen v Plus because of this...it would not show up under My Computer and was basically inaccessible...another problem with the MTP also.

I've owned the clix for a few months now, and I'm happy with it. My wife has a Nano and the clix beats it for sure. I'm not talking about just features, but usability through the menus and playing music. It's a much richer experience. Too bad it's only 2GB, though you can try to find the 4GB model. I miss carrying more, but it's perfect to use in the car for those short trips or commuting.

There was an earlier discussion about MTP vs UMS. You can use either with the new Clix 2.
Also for the person who said not to buy Iriver because the hard drive of one of the other models crashed after the insurance expired, I don't know many companies that cover problems with no insurance. You can get the hard drive replaced at misticaudio.
