Sony Bean Review
The Bean (NW-E307) is one of Sony’s flash players that takes on a unique organic shape. Sony gave you 2 different capacities and 4 different colors. The 512MB version is dipped in white or blue and the 1GB version comes in black or pink. A self contained USB plug pops out of the top to plug directly into your computer, saving the hassle of carrying around an extra cable. The impressive feature is the Bean’s 50 hour playback time. Also, Sony added a FM tuner for good measure.
Sound good? Keep reading- the Bean has a darker side.
Accessories
The Bean comes packaged with earbuds, a USB extension cable, and software. The only other accessory (not included) that I am aware of is an armband that Sony sells on its website. On the top of the player is a hook which would have been a useful feature, if Sony had included a lanyard.
Software & Transferring Media
This is where it starts going down hill. I have written time and time again about how horrible it is to get music onto any Sony MP3 player using SonicStage, the included software. It’s not just me- all critics will agree that SonicStage is a really poor excuse for a media player and it is a plague on the good things that come from Sony’s MP3 player business.
For a while SonicStage was your only option to get music onto your Sony player, but two different (not well known) applications have risen from Sony.
The first SonicStage alternative is made by Sony and it is called Vaio Link. It is a very simple program which will allow you to drop MP3 files into a window to make the transfer to the player. But that is all it does. You cannot manage media with Vaio Link, nor can you transfer music back to you computer.
The next app called MP3 File Manager is probably the best solution. It is minimalist but still allows you to somewhat manage your media. The program is one screen which will allow you to drag and drop tracks to the window. It will then immediately, but slowly, transfer the tracks to the Bean. But unlike the Vaio Link program, MP3 File Manager will allow you to delete media from the Bean. But that is all the features you will get out of this application. However, it is the best that Sony has to offer as far as transferring music to your player. The nice thing about this applications is that it is not installed on your computer, the exe file resides on the Bean so you can run the program on any Windows computer that supports UMS devices.
Build Quality
The Bean feels like a toy- light and flimsy. You almost feel like you are going to break it just by pressing the buttons and espicially operating the pop out USB plug. But I will say that the unique shape of the bean contours comfortably to your hand. It is a treat to hold whether your hands are big or small. User Interface
Yes, the Sony Bean is a treat to hold, however it is not a treat to operate. The 5 way navigational pad is too small and too delicate. Simply trying to turn the volume up was a difficult task. Many times I would accidentally hit skip or pause/play when adjusting the volume or vise versa. The only way to describe the user interface is that it’s extremely frustrating to operate.
If your hands are small enough to use the tiny navigation stick, flipping through folders and files is fairly simple. However it is difficult to read longer file names on the one line OLED display.
Battery
The batter life on the Bean is impressive. On a full charge it is rated at 50 hours of playback time. I did not have the patience to evaluate the battery life of the bean, but you can safely count on between 40-50 hours. You can also quick-charge the player for 3 minutes, giving you a 3 hour playback time. This is a great grab and go feature.
Audio Playback
The audio playback is very good, much like all of Sony’s MP3 players. The sound is very clear and crisp, but at times it may not play back loud enough for some people. I have yet to come across a volume hack to take off the volume restriction.
Conclusion
The Sony Bean has a few good things going for it, like its 50 hour battery life, 3 minute quick-charge, built in USB connection, and crisp sound. SonicStage really puts a hindrance on this player, but therre are a few SonicStage alternatives so transferring music is a little easier to swallow. The navigational controls however, are not as easy to swallow. They are nearly impossible to use for someone with normal to large hands and still difficult for people with small hands. Even after a few days of becoming familiar with the Bean it was still a daunting task just trying to change tracks or adjust the volume.
If you are in love with the design and you have small hands then you could possibly consider this player. Otherwise, you should take a look at Sony’s two other flash based players, the Circ or the Core or pretty much any other flash MP3 player out there.
Purchasing
The Sony Bean is available at almost any online or brick and mortar retailer that sells MP3 player.
The Good
- Good Sound
- 50 Hour Playback Time
- 3 Minute Quick Charge
- Built in USB Plug
- UMS (Data Only)
The Bad
- Poor Build Quality
- Tiny Flimsy Buttons
- UMS Does Not Support Music Transfer
- SonicStage
- One Line Screen
- Lack of Included Accessories

You mention "The nice thing about this applications is that it is not installed on your computer, the exe file resides on the Bean so you can run the program on any Windows computer that supports UMS devices."
Yet you list as a bad, "No UMS Support."
How does that resolve?
EnzoTen on February 1, 2006 8:25 AM
Sorry I wasnt so clear on the UMS thing.
The Bean is UMS, but you cannot transfer music just by dragging and dropping. It must be encoded to the device using the various software programs.

i'm using it for my hd5 because i cant stand that horrible excuse for an application called ss.

is there a case for this mp3 player?? its good.
Sam on February 12, 2006 3:15 PM
Hi, do these two named Programs also work with other Sony Products like the nw-hd1 (with mp3 enabled)?
mike on February 16, 2006 7:37 PM
I had a few glitches from the start like downloading, control button, carrying case, easy to break headphones(one backhand playing tennis). If you download sonic stage, be more patient with the control button, make a carrying case, be careful with the headphones and you will be successful. No other player out there will give you good quality music for a long period of time like this one. I turn the jukebox on at work and it plays all week long without recharge(40hr work week). This is great! Be patient and you will find that sony connects with people. You will be able to hear tons more music with great quality than any other player out there!

I purchased the Sony bean last week. Upon reading the comments here I was somewhat concerned when I started transfering purchased music onto Sonic Stage for transfer to my bean. But thankfully I was relieved when I discovered it was not that difficult or complicated. This is my first experience with an MP3 so I am a newbie but I found by doing ONE song at a time it was easiest rather than trying to transfer several songs at once. The sound quality is phenomenal. I would
like to know if anyone knows if Sony - or anyone else - makes a device so I can play my Sony bean via my car stereo. I have a CD player in my car. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Aca on March 14, 2006 6:08 PM
Is it loud enough? Because I will use it wnen I drive scooter.
Kate on March 16, 2006 4:32 PM
The sound quality is great and the volume goes up very loud. I am deaf in one ear from a younger age so I tend to like to turn the volume up louder to compensate for that - plus I am a middle school teacher and all the kids have MP3 players - I have allowed them to listen to mine and they all agree - the volume is great. Be careful it doesn't hurt your hearing.
Kate on March 16, 2006 4:35 PM
I would like to know if any of you have used the item you can buy to play your Sony Bean through your car's FM radio. It plugs into the outlet in the car and the music from your MP3 player will play through the car radio? Please let me know if you have tried this - what the sound quality is like and how easy it is to operate. I would like to know these things before I invest the $30 to buy this item. Many thanks in advance.

NONE OF THE FILES INSTALLED ARE READABLE. HOW DO I GET THE MUSIC FROM ITUNES TO THE BEAN?
mary on May 2, 2006 10:10 AM
no where in the booklet does it tell you how to shut the "Bean " off. what's the easiest way whether you are tuned to an FM station or listening to music.
old rocker on May 12, 2006 11:00 AM
I too would like to know how to shut it off. Also, sometimes when I try to use mine after it has been sitting for a while it shows "hold" in the window and I have a hard time getting it to work, what is that?
I do love my Bean, got it about a month ago and love it, love it.
Krista on May 20, 2006 8:26 PM
Don't even try to use the Bean in your car. Hooked up as to an auxillary audio port on my car cd player, I had to turn the volume all the way up on the Bean and almost all the way up. The sound quality (at that volume) is terrible.
You shut it off by pushing the play button again (so that the track stops) and that's it. It shuts itself off.
Qi. on May 23, 2006 2:03 PM
exactly! u dont need to shut it off... got mine a few months now and i honestly dont see all the downsides. I have no trouble with the buttons. i can manage everything with one hand easily when im jogging. Turning the volume up or down is no problem. the slider to unlock/lock is really really great! had other mp3s that were frustrating compared with this one..
great radio and 50!!! hours music time.. havent seen another one like this . I love my bean =)

I bought my Sony bean nw-e205 the week before, and a had before a creative muVoTX..it had more functions but i love the new bean. It has a very realiable shape. I had some problems with the sonic stage, but I downloaded the file manager so it is OK. It just that I don't like the small display. So in general it is great. I love it :)

I used it for a few minutes and it wasnt that hard to control and I dont see why you should work with it often, only things I do with my mp3 player is start/stop en change volume :p
BeanHelper on May 24, 2006 8:14 PM
In order to turn this device off you can play your music, stop it, and wait for 10 seconds or so and it will automatically shut off. When you hit the play button the music will play. I suggest when you shut it off put it on 'hold'. After putting it on 'hold' the device will turn back on but wait another 10 seconds or so and it will shut off.
TOMMYBOY on May 29, 2006 11:54 AM
I baught this because it is pretty cheap now, $120. So now that I have it i have no complaints about sound quality. I am using atrac 3 132 kbps and it sounds great. I even pluged it into big speakers (they usually bring out the imperfections in the audio but it sounded better than mp3.
The thing is that It doesn't feel like an mp3 player. I had an ipod and that felt like a peice of technology. But this is a serious auio player.
The radio works great (I wouldn't have baught it if it didn't have radio)
I thaught that I would have hated the overall design but i dont. The 5 way button works great ( true it does take a little bit of conciousness to use) but I don't have anything to complain about. It feels sturdier than the ipod and I KNOW it wont break.
The only thing that could break would be the battery in time.
And the slider is not flimsy and everything about the player including the hold mechanism is inginuitive and well thaught out.
oh i have 25 CD's on it and betery life is amazing! And one thing no one talked about is that the player is fast and not buggy unlike the ipod and so many other players.

to those who are having problems turning the bean on: My friend had the same problem with her bean. She couldn't turn it on, but when she connected it to a computer the display would go on. To fix it, she reset the bean and everything was fine. It's a lil tricky to reset it. You have to use a pin and push the pin into the reset hole for about 5 to 10 seconds. Make you are are pressing down on the button that is inside the reset hole. You can kind of feel it when you're pushing the pin inside the reset hole.

old rocker on July 19, 2006 2:53 PM
When I press the button to turn off the music 'hold' comes on then normally when I turn it back on again 'hold' is still in the viewing box and the music will not play, SO I have found if you slide the little cover open then press the button it will start playing, then just slide the cover closed and enjoy! I STILL love my bean.

I received a bean for Christmas to take to the gym with me. It didn't have a case, so I fashioned one out of some fabric elastic bands & velcro. Actually works pretty good. I dropped it onto the floor which damaged the control stick. Sent it back to Sony and they replaced it under warranty. I have had no problems since then. The battery life is great, and using the SonicStage software, I have over 400 songs on the 1GB player using the ATRAC format. Since I use it in the gym, and not as part of my home system (BTW, my songs are ripped from my CD collection) the sonic quality is as good as I could ask for. If people are having trouble turning on their beans and all it says is hold, the cover on the USB plug is probably in the hold position. This will actually lock all the controls during use so an accidental bump wont change the song or volume. If you slide the cover all the way closed, and then slide it towards open just a little, it should work.
Lord of the Bean on July 27, 2006 10:33 AM
I bought some tunes from the Walmart music website and I was successful in importing them into SonicStage 4.
However, when I tried to transfer the tunes to the Bean, it told me that I was not allowed to transfer these songs. Is this a copyright issue? I paid for the tracks from Walmart.com What can I do about this?
Is there a Forum board for this thing hosted anywhere? One with threads for tips/tricks etc. I can put one together if anyonelse is interested. If you are interested in a Forum for the Sony Bean, send a quick email to LordOfTheBean@moremail.us

Yoshi on August 12, 2006 1:03 PM
Hi everyone. Just thought I'd share a lil of my experience with my bean. Just got it a couple of days ago, and have already experienced some of the "issues" most ppl had.
For the issue of deleting songs off the bean, you will need to use the software provided on Sony Support website. Have used the Sony SonicStage 4.0 as well as a MP3 File Transfer program which will be installed into the bean. Both softwares are able to add and delete files from the bean.
Another issue I faced was that the bean couldn't start up at all. The seller I got from said perhaps this could be due to overcharging issues. Thus, I performed a reset (pressed on the reset button with a pin for abt 5 - 10 secs as per ebBaby) and then it was working again. And my music files were retained in the bean, not deleted after the reset.
As for those going on vacation, I think I've seen a nifty device / gadget which acts as a portable power supply and allows you to charge your mobile phones and/or USB devices on the go. Another solution would be to go for the in-car USB charger which connects into the cigarette lighter port. You can then charge any USB device in the car!
Hope the above info could help someone out =)

Thank you Yoshi. I am in the process of tracking an in-car USB charger.

What's with all the morons asking how to turn the Bean off? And asking "Why does it say hold?" Did you even glance at your instruction manual? Also, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to just figure it out on your own.
Candy on August 18, 2006 9:06 AM
I bought my Sony Bean at the beginning of the year and as a complete technophobe I have found it really easy to use on sonicstage just following the instrutions in the pack to add/delete etc. It is the perfect size to fit in my handbag or in my pocket and I love the colour - pink!
My only concern is that it does turn itself on quite often as it gets knocked in my bag, and I am struggling to find the 'armband' to use for the gym or a case to keep it in whilst its in my bag. Like many people I am also making my own cover but to be fair it looks a bit naff!
I have been searching today online but can't find anything other than a million brightly coloured covers for the ipod....does anyone know a site I can use.
Cheers!

Also, i haven't bothered to make my own case cos theres little need to, i've dropped it a fe times and it still works fine and looks kl, oh yeah, also, i just made my own strap for it using a bit of string (alternatively u can just use a strap of some old device or bye 1 for another device and just use that)

I have an ipod and it is easier to use, most of the time. The bean has a terrific design, I can hold it in the palm of my hand comfortably while walking, this is what sold it. I has songs on it and after it was formated, I get error message when I try to download to it, device need to be authorized? It also looks up lock up my computer, another Sony product. I ve even got a message screen telling me the drivers are incorrect. Other than the shape I hate it. It should just download songs from any pay and download company.

This might be a stupid question but..... Can you download an i-tune or pos cast to this thing? Or are those strictly for the ipod?

My bean suddenly stopped being recognized by Windows. When I plug it into my USB port the bean read out flashes between "USB Connect" and "Access". Also, I get a popup error message which states that USB device not recognized. One of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. Any suggestions?

I purchased a remanufactured NW-E307 a couple of months ago (at a heck of a discount, I might add) and so far it's been performing quite well. I'm used to the SonicStage software (I'm using version 4 with no additional drivers), so it hasn't been a painful learning curve for me to transfer files and the sound quality is just fine using a pair of MDR-EX71 earbuds (I couldn't stand the ones that came with it). I really love the form factor and the battery life is unreal.
To all that are having having issues with the jog wheel and hold button, try not to fat-finger them. It's an audio player, not a jackhammer. When using the jog wheel just gently tap the edges in the desired direction and it will respond just fine. If you try and put continuous pressure on it like an analog joystick then of course eventually it will break. If you're having problems with the Bean being recognized or not accessing, read the manual that came with the darn thing. It will tell you how to reset it, which cures a few of these ills that people have repeatedly asked about in these comments (even though the solution was posted by someone else previously if you bother to read all of them). The number of songs you're able to load to it will depend on the file type and bit rate you are using to compress the music. Higher quality files are generally going to be bigger, so you'll be able to fit less on the player. Remember that the 600+ capacity stated by Sony is based on files in ATRAC format with a bit rate of 64kbps, so your mileage may vary. And if you're unsatisfied with the sound quality, once again REFER TO THE MANUAL. Yes, there are instructions for adjusting the sound quality and you can adjust the treble and bass individually from setting of 0 to +4 depending on your preference. There is a reason manufacturers include documentation with their products. Don't have a manual? It's available for download on Sony's support page. Try using it before you go running around the internet screaming "OMG, what a piece of junk!"

I purchased a pink bean direct from Sony.com last December. The jog control has been broken since May! What help do I get from Sony? A reburbished one for $29.00 plus the cost of shipping the old one in or the old one fixed for only $77.00 plus cost of shipping it to them!!! Sony.com has them listed now for only $89.95!! Don't buy directly from the company!! And the nearest service center nearest me is in TEXAS, how convenient!

I love love love my Bean! My husband bought it for me when we took a one week trip to Texas. I only had to charge it before I left and it lasted through 20 hours of travel plus the entire vacation. We stayed on the beach. My husband has a ScanDisk Sansa mp3 player. It came with a nice carrying case that is clear and completely covers the buttons while allowing you to fully access them. What a deal on the ScanDisk! It was $30 cheaper than my Bean. However, he cannot fit 600+ songs on his 1MB. He did have to replace his AAA batteries once too. I however, did not have a case for my Bean, and you know how it goes at the beach....Sand in every crevice! My Bean got sand in it and I was so upset! I thought it was junk, but NOPE! I just blew it out and it was good to go. I have had it for 8 months now. I use it when I mow the lawn, walk, and in the car. I can plug it right into our Trucks aftermarket stereo as it has a cable port right in it. I just plug it into the headphone jack. It sounds awesome and takes up so little space. If you turn the car volume all the way down and then plug in the Bean turned all the way up...you will have a lot of adjustment with the car volume. When I mow the lawn I have gotten the headphones caught on tree branches and had them yanked right out of my ears. Still working fine. I did buy some sponge covers for the ear buds and they fit in my ears much better. My husband was able to get 350 songs on my bean without using the special Sony format. With that, he could have easily gotten 600. I did not need that many songs all at once. He put all my favorite songs on my bean from my CD collection and downloads from the web. I am interested in getting a case for my bean for when I have gym shorts and a tank top on with no pockets. I have stolen my Husbands ScanDisk Sansa player a few times because of no pockets and his nifty clear case. Maybe I should start making custom Bean cases...it sounds like they are hard to come by. I saw a nice leather one on Amazon, but it said currently unavailable. My one complaint is that the "hold" button sometimes slips off of "Hold" position. I went to get my Bean out for a 2 hour car trip the other day and realized I had forgotten to charge it since I used it up last. I plugged it into our PC for 3 minutes and it was good to go even though we were in a hurry. I do not understand all the problems people are having. I found it very self explanitory. Push play/pause to stop the music, slide to hold and you are done...it shuts off. The display is awesome because it is so bright it the dark. I love the little music note that flashes. The Menu is self explanitory. I am not an electronics wiz by any means, but I found it very user friendly. The other complaint I do have is the way Sony splits their headphone wires. I thought mine were messed up at first, but then I saw that they are all like that. I find it a littlle awkward. It is a small price to pay for such a cute contraption:) I do NOT think it feels chinsy. The hold slide is a little lose, but it does not feel like it is going anywhere. You people must be pretty hard on things if you are breaking the buttons or holding them down instead of clicking them like you are supposed to. This thing is not made by Fisher Price. It is for adults/responsible teens. Treat your Bean nicly and it will give you many hours/months/years of joy. When you release the UBS port...push on it slightly before trying to slide the cover over it. Do not jam the cover over trying to get that thing to retract. That could be why it popped off! These things are electronics not Army Tanks.

Well Pari, try dropping an ipod ! Perhaps you also drop glass as well, this too breaks....get a life and look after things. TASH, all I can say is LEARN TO SPELL! Your mastery of computer ebonics will get you nowhere in life, nor is it in the least bit impressive. Would it really kill you to actually spell out the word "and" vice the rediculous version "nd"? Not to mention the rest of your post is a joke. You state that you are a teen, but I would have guessed more in the range of 9 or 10. It is kids like you that are responsible for the creation of the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND program.

Well, I love my bean! Use it all the time. Have found that the toggle is becoming a little loose but that is becuase I throw it around in my bag and don't have a cover for it. I have small hands so the button seems fine for me. I love that I don't have to worry about charging it and if I do - just plug it in to the computer while I work.
Looking for a cover - have read the other comments but can't find if anyone mentions where to get the armband and now that they are dicsontinuing the Bean it might be hard!
I also love that it has a radio - don't care how many songs you have sometimes you just want to listen to the radio!
I don't think that the bean was designed with kids or large men in mind - but for girls who like pink electronics it is perfect! Think I might buy another one cheap just in case!

my bean has suddenly stopped working, it will not connect to the computer anymore. i plug it in and it says USB malfunction, and then a couple of hours later it wont connect at all. any suggestions or help tips???
Val on February 16, 2007 2:09 PM
Perhaps Neiman Marcus purchased all (or most) of the covers and armbands. I received my bean as a reward from NM last April and it came with an armband, a case, a cable adaptor, standard earbuds and an additional (much better) set of Sony MDR-NC11A noise cancelling headphones. I highly recommend these headphones as they are far superior to the standard earbuds. They are also great to protect your hearing during air travel and noisy activities. Just be careful not to use them when you need to be able to hear (driving, cycling, etc.).
I do have a question for anyone who has successfully interfaced the bean with their home stereo, or with a portable stereo system. I have looked online and there does not seem to be a docking system for the bean. I would love to be able to play my "bean music" for everyone to hear on the boat, during vacation and at home when we entertain, since my home system is not conducive to including a CD changer. Does anyone know what components it would require to acheive this?
I also have a comment about Sonic Stage software. I found it simple to use, self explanatory actually. My notebook is relatively new (Dell XPS M140 with Windows XP) so this may be a factor. I was able to easily transfer multiple tracks to my bean by using the click, shift, click method to highlight the tracks, then press the transfer arrow. I did however, recently have a problem after not using Sonic Stage for about six months. I was purchasing music and could not get the tracks to load into my cart. I called Sony and they patiently walked me through the steps to repair the problem. It turned out to be a problem with my Adobe Flash Player. Once I downloaded the most recent version, the problem was solved.
For the record, I am not a technology savvy person. As a matter of fact, until about 10 years ago when I purchased my first computer for my business, I kept hoping that computers were a passing "fad" so that I would not be forced to learn how to operate one. For those having issues with their bean or with Sonic Stage, DO read your manual (which can be found online if you are not the original owner) and DO NOT hesitate to call Sony for support if you still have questions.
Anyway, I hope these comments were helpful to other "beanies". My thanks in advance to anyone who has advice regarding setting up a bean home stero system and/or bean portable stereo system.

I had a Sony bean for about 18 months until I dropped it and broke the volume/song selector toggle. Actually, that was the fourth or fifth time that I had dropped it, but the only time that did any damage. I really wish that this device was still available, as it seems that Sony discontinued it. Mine didn't have a ton of memory, but it was unbelievably easy to use.
I loved how easy it was to switch between songs, playlists, and repeat styles on the go, no need to even take it out of my pocket. I have not found a single other mp3 player that lets me use it on the go without pulling it out and looking through things. I hate the design of iPods and the newer Sony players are nowhere near as easy to use on the go.
rockerkid on December 27, 2007 2:28 PM
If good sound quality is what u r after, listen to analog, like a record.
MP3's have thw worst sound quality there is-it is very flat and instruments are left out, and if u think that u can only get old music on records u are wrong-hot topic and newbury comics and oher stores sell brand new records, besides, all you guys are old and only listen to old music anyways.
I listen to old and new music BUT ONLY ROCK!!
rockerkid on December 27, 2007 2:37 PM
And to shut the bean off, press stop and it automtically shuts off.
i have a bean and the hold button snapped off, and the jack for the speakers was broken so the music sounded like a broken 8track, so i had to take the whole thing apart and melt new wires on the little sound board, and now it look like a rat more than a bean cuz the wire is sticking out. but now it worx great. the bean is pretty crappy but its a lot better than the ipod.
though if u r like me and ride the school bus, which u prolly dont, then the volume definatly doesnt go up loud enough.
i like the bean cuz its small and fits in my purse so i can bring it everywhere, but i still prefer my cd player-its a lot easier to press open play and off , but thats my opinion

The Sony Bean sucks completely. I got it one year for christmas; one year later, the trigger that keeps it on hold is broken, the little button with pause and play and forward and whatnot snapped off. The paint has worn away from the hold button sliding back and forth, and let me tell you something. I never dropped it, not even once.
However, my friend dropped hers once or twice and all the buttons are pressed in, including the play/pause button. The hold trigger gets stuck all the time. It truly is a piece of crap. Don't waste your money on it. I've dropped my iPod nano more than 10 times, stepped on it, had it stolen, and anything else you can imagine. The only thing that ever happened is the paint at the top slightly chipped off and it freezes up once every four or five months.
Unless you only want it for a short period of time or for simple things, like at your office or something, I would not buy it. It is way too flimsy and they should have put more thought into it. My favorite feature was the FM radio, though.

Any help?

Nothing has broken and is sstill running smoothly 3 years down the road.
The only thing that I want for it is a docking station/speaker type thing so I can listen without using the earphones. Does anyone know where they are available.?

If having a searchable library is important at all, consider the ante up to just get an ipod.
I bought hte bean and have given up on the library functions. It is a total waste. I am forced to just listen to all 50 hrs sequentially rather than get frustrated trying to search tracks. I am tossing it and buying an ipod. Now I can get an Ipod nano with 2 or 3 times the storage for only $150 or less, and I wasted over $100 on the bean. Maybe my sister will like it when I give it to her.
Steve on December 5, 2008 7:56 AM
I messed with it some more, and got the library search to work a little better. The problem is that it sometimes jumps all around to places in the menu you don't want, or will not do what you want it to. They really missed the boat though by not having a tag for music genre. I like to play my collection by styles such as all jazz, all classical, all blues, etc...The best I can do is play by group or album, and that means I need to know what is there before I search.
I still have major issues with the off thing. My hold switch will not turn it off every time. If the hold switch gets bumped, it goes back on very easily. If you think it is off but it is not, the battery goes down, and then it is not ready when you need it. Sometimes I don't use it for days or weeks. I really don't understand why they did not give it a simple off button. DuH??? I will try the method of pressing play I suppose, but I think my off function is broken since it is so inconsistent.

Just wanted to say that I got my Sony Bean a long time ago, and it's only finally starting to fail on me.
