SanDisk Sansa e270 6GB Flash Player
SanDisk’s new e200 line of MP3 players will top out at 6GB with the e270. They will also have a 2GB (e250) and 4GB (e260) versions. The prices will MSRP for $200, $250, and $300 respectively. You will be able to enjoy your audio, video, and picture playback on its 1.8 inch color screen. The specifics on what file types it will support are not yet released, but it will be PlaysForSure compatible.
Do you not think that 6GB is enough? Well there is also a microSD slot for adding additional memory or secure content on SanDisk’s TrusteFlash and gruvi content cards, which can be shared with mobile phones.
One last feature that is a first is the casing is made out of Liquidmetal, some stronger than steel material that is resistant to scratching and wear.

Frankly, as the owner of a Sansa e140, I'm not planning on buying another product from Sandisk unless they undergo a major overhaul. Their firmware is really buggy (even the latest version) and there is basically no customer support to speak of. The player has a lot of trouble just playing correctly-tagged, alphabetically named mp3s in the correct order (ie, it's totally incapable of doing so in several cases and instead plays the files in a random order). This, along with the fact that you can't bookmark a file, nor resume play from midway through it, makes it pretty much impossible to play (mp3) audiobooks on the player.
The e140 has a lot of good features for the price, but it's just not worth the hassle.
Chris on March 1, 2006 11:32 PM
The comments from a previous user are only valid if you have old firmware. I bought one off the shelf yesterday and all of these issues have been fixed 100% except for the bookmarking feature. Tracks are never played in random order though: I've tested dozens of albums.
Some thoughts on what I liked...
Loading music on is so simple it's not even funny. I never even had to touch a driver disk or manual because everything just works with all my existing music. The controls are intuitive and the amount of detail in the menus and on-screen during playback is mind-boggling for the price range. It reminds me of the ergonomics and functionality of many more expensive hard-drive based players such as the creative Nomad.
Given the price range, the only cons with this player that I think are reasonable to point out are:
1. Missing the bookmark feature for mp3s
2. Playlist functionality is basic - can't save lists, can't enqueue more than one complete album/artist at a time.
I don't think anything on the market at a similar price gives you what this MP3 player can.
If you see people complaining that it "dies in 2 days": they didn't bother doing a search and finding out that it hung on a dead battery and needs to be reset by holding the power button for a few seconds with the battery out. The same info is available if these people were to call customer service.

Could you expand and explain this? It seems like a very horribly fatal flaw in this product.
Patwis on April 25, 2006 12:13 PM
You can set up a type of playlist on it, the full manual on the CD explains it. Also you can view all music with it.
Mark on May 8, 2006 4:06 PM
a type of playlist? You can create a playlist in windows media player, transfer it over to the player as a playlist ( whatever you name it) and then go to play music>playlist, and youll see the list and it will play in the exact order you made it.
- Resume function is only FULLY compatible with Audiobook files, netlibrary and mp3 files wont support it.
- you can sync over more then one playlist at a time, if you call sandisk tech support @ 866-726-3475 most if not any of the agents can walk you through it.

Hi Mark,
I just bought an e270 yesterday. It's a really slick-looking unit.
Firmware bugs:
* Here's exactly what I did: I uploaded a single folder of mp3s with japanese tags on them. Given that there is no asian font support, the song names appeared as boxes (that's okay). However, I hit the record button accidentally, so I selected "no" for "save recording?" At this point, the firmware stalled. The only thing that worked was scroll wheel (which let select between "cancel" and something else... I forgot), and the lock switch. When connected to the USB port, it does indicate charge on the screen, but no USB connection. None of the buttons worked, so I could not even reset the device. I took it back to the store for the replacement unit.
What I would want in future firmware updates:
* Asian (Japanese, Korean, Chinese) text support. Come on guys, I know you can do it. Do you need a help from a microcontroller/processor programmer?
* Software lock option for the record button. The record button is so conveniently located that I can imagine myself accidentally pressing this thing again.

This player is great up until you run into the playlist issue. I returned an IPOD because it they are so restrictive and bought the Sansa because you can drag and drop....except playlists. For that you have to go back through media player, if it works, which is buggy and has not worked yet. This is indeed a major flaw in the design. I called support and the desk agent agreed that it would be better to be able to drag m3u files, but said that is the way it is designed so you have no other choice. This is a firmware update that is needed ASAP. But I may have already taken this back to the store by then...add this feature and the player is very very good, without, just too cumbersome to maintain lists.

how do you delete the songs on the device?
when i hook it up to the computer there is no music file
Antonello on June 22, 2006 7:58 AM
Hi all...i bougth a Sansa E270 and was really happy with most features of the player (apart from the FFW and RWD seek times, these are pathetic, the iPod Nano is much faster for this..., which means if you are listening to a long MP3 mix, you can go to certain parts of the track really fast, the Sansa E200 series skips about 15 seconds at time about every 0.3 of a second...which is pathetic, even when using the wheel)....
Anyhow, apart from the above....overall is well built and quite intuitive and easy to use.....until i encountered the following major issues...:(
Basically, i have uploaded some of my tracks in both MSC and MTP mode (one is for loading data, the other one for music). I then deleted some of this data/tracks.
I then noticed that some deleted track names were still on the device. (although not present while browsing the Sansa via Windows XP, not even when viewing hidden files!).
I was unable to delete these tracks. So i have re-loaded the same them on the player and tried to re-delete these to see if it was a one-off thing. Nothing.
Next thing i did was removed all music tracks from the device. In Windows XP the MUSIC folder was completely empty.
I then check on the player, and 2 track names still there! I then by pure trial and error, clicked on the "Scan through tracks" option from the menu. The Sansa player screen went completely black (although the blue dial light stayed on).
The player froze and no buttons would work at this point. Couldn't switch it off.
My option was to re-connect the Sansa player via USB in the hope that it would connect. The player screen turned on with the Sansa logo and nothing else. No PC connection or nothing.
To date, i am having to return this product for an exchange as I have been unable to switch the unit off as it has no "hard-reset" button. It is on at all times but its software is frozen and practically unasable!
I am quite confident this is a bug with the software and sincerely hope the firmware will be updated very soon, as what has happened are major issues!
Has anybody else experienced something similar with a Sansa E200 generation players and can you advise why MP3 track names are being duplicated and entries fully removed from the list?
Antonello on June 22, 2006 8:01 AM
...forgot to mention....the Sansa firmware software should be fixed so that it gives the user confirmation prompts before deleting tracks/fm/voice recordings permanently. At present if you select the option to delete a by mistake, the file is deleted in an instant....gone!

I bought a Sansa e270 on 7/9/2006 and on 7/10/2006 I turned it on the 2nd or 3rd time. The blueish ring comes on but nothing else. Couldn't find a way to reset. Spent a bit of time researching online. Finally pulled the cover off the back and pulled the battery. Put battery back in and works (for now)... I have not looked yet to see if there is a newer firmware version. This is a bit different than the post on this same page in that I verified (after pulling the battery and re-inserting) that the battery indicator shows fully charged. I hope that this isn't a sign of things to come with the Sansa e270.
Terry on July 22, 2006 2:05 PM
Completely agree with Joe. Units garbage unless you like spending hours
screwing around with an mp3 player. Downloaded almost a gig worth of music. Shows as downloaded on pc and memory shows they are there on the player but only 30 songs are playable. Same music selection downloads and plays fine on my m240. Tried upgrading the firmware and now it will not get past showing the sandisk logo on startup. Tried starting in recovery mode with no luck. Never even knew this site existed until I owned this unit and had scan the web for info. How hard can it be to make a mp3 player work as advertised. Thank god that sandisk doesn't make computers. While I am already ranting, sandisks support on the e140 consists of 5 lines of info unrelated any actual support issues.

There is a firmware update on sandisk.com.

I just bought this E200 4 gig and have had some issues with uploading pic and vids. first the software would not even launch after uninstalling and re installing the Arcsoft Media Converter i was finally able to get the software to launch. now the media converter does not recognize the player. it would be so nice it there was actually some web based support for this product! I like the ease of use in terms of the player it's self. But that's about it . I'm going with the Creatave next time. Which will be very soon at this rate!!!

I can not figure out how to delete songs on the sansa e270, but other than that i have had not any problems with the mo3 player other than it completly froze on me and the blue circle light stayed on and the only way to reboot it was to pull the back casing off and take the battery out.
How do I delete songs on the sansa e270?
Daryl on August 24, 2006 5:09 PM
FYI... A frozen player, with the blue circle light on, can be rebooted by holding the power button down for a lengthy 10 seconds. I was determined to not remove the back cover. To my surprise, when I was counting and got to 10 it shut down and I could reboot it just fine. I did not have the cable in it.
Daryl on August 31, 2006 9:50 AM
Update... the holding of the power button for 10 seconds has worked each time I have had a frozen unit regardless of what lights are on. It doesn't freeze often but its nice to have such a simple solution if it does. I highly recommend this player.

System Reboot Issues:
I just picked up my e270 from Circuit City yesterday. I got it home, loaded up some music (using MSC) and everything worked fine. When I tried to install the latest firmware update from Sandisk, my player locked up and the screen kept telling me I needed to go into System Recovery Mode. If this happens to you, my advice is to not play around. Immediatly call the Sandisk tech support. These guys rock! They told me how to wipe out my players memory and start from scratch. It is a very easy process and you will be up and running in about 5 minutes. They will email you 2 files that you need to reinstall on your Sansa MP3 player. When you load the 2 files they will email you onto your player, you automatically receive the latest firmware update with the customizable EQ settings. Now if I could just figure out how to get playlists on my e270 I will be good-to-go.
MESSAGE FROM SANDISK TECH SUPPORT
This is for use in Recovery Mode.
To access Recovery Mode:
-Make sure the player is off (if necessary, hold down the power button for 20 seconds to turn it off)
-Move the hold button to ON (move to the right towards the headphone jack).
-Hold the record button.
-Connect the player to the computer.
-Keep holding the record button till the "new hardware is ready for use" comes up, then realease the record button.
Now you should have a 16MB drive in My Computer. Simply download the 2 attached files, then put them onto the 16MB drive (via drag-and-drop, or copy-and-paste).
Once that's done, turn off the hold switch, then unplug the player. Check if the issue is now resolved.

Plus, when you load the 2 files they will email you onto your player, you automatically receive the latest firmware update with the customizable EQ settings. I bought a e260 3 months ago, and was very pleased with it. Until it started freezing on some screens. I didn't know that i had to hold down the power button so i just took out the battery and all was good. But about a week ago, it started just skipping some of my songs, songs that had played previously. I was annoyed but i just kept listening to it, until the list of songs it wouldn't play for whatever reason kept growing bigger. Tonight i downloaded new firmware and then it had deleted all the songs that didn't play! 600 in total. Now i face the daunting task of putting them all back on.
I like the unit, but they definetly need to work on the bugs in it.

2 issues I have with mty 6GB E270. Am looking through this site's forums for answers, but in the meantime, they are negatives worth mentioning for potential buyers.
1. Playlists. I tried Winamp, Media Player, and a couple proggies I got from download.com. None of them works! All proggies will tell me playlists/music are transferred and synced, but when I use the player, the playlist is nonexistent on the player.
2. Phantom files. I deleted some music from the player, and wound up with a bunch of music files of 0 seconds length-- just the artist/title in the player's directory, but unplayable. When I looked in the player using Windows Explorer, I found the delete files still there... as garbled file names, but still taking up several megabytes of space. And some of them cannot be deleted! WinExplorer will try to delete them, but they just reappear after deletion. I don't have time for issues such as this.
Tim on September 19, 2006 12:30 PM
Love the player, but definitely need some sort of patch to fix this playlist problem. I hate having to scroll around looking for various artists to play when I want to chill and listen to music, and that is what makes playlists so great. Until they get this problem fixed, the player is just average.

Playlist issues:
I have two of these sandisks, and the best way I have found to put playlist on the player is this:
1. Open WMP. Click on "View". Select "Full Mode". Create a Playlist.
2. Make sure the Sandisk is in "MTP" mode. To do this go to "Settings" then "USB Mode". Select "MTP"
3. Plug the Sandisk into the USB port.
4. In WMP, Click on the "SYNC" tab. Drag your Playlist(s) to the SYNC plane. Click on the "Start Sync" button. The playlist will sync to your Sandisk, and WMP will give you a message stating the Synchronization is complete.
5. Unplug the USB cable.
6. Turn off the Sandisk. (THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! IF YOU DO NOT TURN OFF THE PLAYER THE PLAYLIST WILL NOT APPEAR)
7. Turn the player back on and make sure the playlist was copied successfully. It should appear in the "Playlist" menu, and if you select to play the list the player will play the music in the order you made the list.
Hope this helps!!

I recently bought the e270 and it does have bugs. If I don't add a number before audio files (like audio books), it plays in random order.
The trouble I'm having now is that I deleted everything from it yet when I go to the music section, it shows all of the folders and songs within.
How can I delete all of these and return to a new state?
Thanks.

Any suggestions?

Answer: The video files are hidden files. Just plug it in and when the screen comes, at the top of the page click Tools> Folder Options> View> and then scroll down and press "Show hidden files and folders" in the "Hidden files and folders" folder. And then you just press apply and ok, and you should see the rest of the folders on your Sansa player (as well as the rest of the hidden files on your computer)

Is there any way to completley re-boot the player? I plugged it into my computer, and the "data" folder is completly gone, along with about 400 "phamtom" tracks.

So basically I couldn't delete al my music, couldn't add new music, and couldn't see half the tracks I had on my playlist when I unplugged the player. And there were the huge phantom files in my music folder that I could do nothing with. So I called for help.
Phantom Files Solution: I got on the phone with the tech support. Apparently it is a popular problem. And this is how to solve it: one needs to format the sansa every few months. That's it. There is one other way of deleting those files, but that involves going into the data folder and deleting the right *.dat file. Even so, it is recommended to format the sansa every couple of months at most. Which means back up all your music and video and pictures, and then format the drive (you can do this by going into My Computer, right clicking on the sansa drive icon, and clicking on format. Make sure it is FAT32, and that you do NOT do a quick format, ie UNCHECK the quick format box). Everything is clean and you start afresh.

There's one major drawback to these Sansas and like others have mentioned the playlist function is worthless. I don't understand why the people who engineer these don't incorporate utility. The folks of CD players final caught on, make a multi disk CD player. For some reason, the transition to digital was done by a bunch of damn kids who don't know what CDs are, or what an album is (much less an album concept). What the Sansa people need to do is provide a means to play more than one album in a row, like loading a CD player with a bunch of disks. I mean come on isn't that like a basic function of playing music. And making playlists in WMP does NOT work, not if you already have music on the MP3 player. YOu will end up with multiple copies of songs and clog up your player. And unlike what people say, you can not delete files from teh Sansa you have re-format the damn thing. Very amateur unsophisticated piece of crap firmware if you ask me. Unbelievable they can sell so many.
I hacked IT! on January 27, 2008 7:13 AM
Don't blame me if YOU BRAKE YOUR player doing this. I didn't brake mine so how could you?
I don't know how, that's why I'm typing this disclaimer
OK OK OK...I got it. I've got a fix for the Play List portion of this troublesome little piece. Under USB mode set it to MSC. Now you can see it in explorer as a regular drive. Explore it. Now you are presented with a list of files. The only one you can play with(without destroying the player) is winamp_cache_0001.xml.
Right click...go to Properties...uncheck Read-Only. Now Right click on that same file and check edit. Now get rid on everything below
and everything above
You are now free of the "Ghosted Files" issue. Disconnect the unit under Safely Remove Hardware in Wind**s and the player will reset itself after power on/off is cycled. Hope this works for everyone.

I hate this thing. Ive had allthe same problems Tom listed
The first model i got failed utterly it would just shut down (with full battery) randomly, freeze all the time, and fail with music and everything in every possible way.
I got a second one, and it worked a lot better, but I only then realized you cannot really make playlists without using rhapsody, and rhapsody in itself is one of the poorest devices with which to create playlists or anything, so I ended up with multiples of every song the first 4 tries, finally I learned a strategy to get it to work a little better.
deleting files had to be done individually---took about 2-4 minutes EACH SONG!
So I made the mistake of trying to delete some of the duplicates from the base files. ERROR. FAIL. DEATH.
So now happily I cannot play more than 5 songs on the player after 800 songs somehow got deleted, I cannot even put songs onto the player, and RHapsody crashes every time I try to use it with the device plugged in. Oh and did I mention support for these things are terrible? If you have a problem--pretty much its one of those "tough luck" scenarios.
I was more pleased with my 500 mb player than this thing.
End of rant.

Hi,
I have a Sansa e270 6GB MP3 Player. Two days ago I tried putting it into recovery mode; so I could reset all of my music. Anyway, I googled ways to get my Sansa into Recovery Mode. I followed some steps that I found...basically I just put a firmware into it. Then I tried turning on my Sansa. The screen said/says "Load main image failed" and under that it says "Switch to Recovery Mode". I keep on trying to turn it off, then turn it back on. But it's not working...and the screen just stays like that, unless it's off. How do I fix this? HELPPP ME PLEEAASEE! :) It sucks not having an MP3 player to listen to! PS. My email is amber_frass@hotmail.com, if you have any advice to give me. :)

ummm i need help my sansa doesnt like alot of songs and doesnt read them unless i put them in a file in the songs folder but then it makes songs that have the names from other songs mixed with a different song but they dont do anything they just make it say theres more songs than there actually is, it makes it hard to scroll through songs cause when i press the skip buttons it shows the corrupt file and says the song is corrupt and then takes around 30 seconds to skip another song.So can someone tell me whats wrong and whether its fixable

Okay, so I loaded some new songs onto my sansa e270 hoping i could listen to them after it refreshed the database... HOWEVER, it will now start refreshing the database, then freeze at the very end! I haven't had problem with it in a while, but I've had to wipe the drive a few times :/ agh. how can i get it to stop freezing?

The most expensive piece of junk I have ever bought. Owned e270 for 2 years now. From the very first day it came out of the box the unit will freeze 2 out of 3 times turning it on. In fact, tonight I am completely unable to turn it on without it freezing. I installed a Sansa MicroSD card into it (one that Sansa says is compatible) and it won't read any content from it. Also, audio playback when playing videos is corrupt and makes horrible scratching noises with ALL videos and ALL headphones I have tried. Unit is worthless. DO NOT BUT AN E200 SERIES!!! Oh, and customer service was useless on all my issues.

I got the e270 and its a cool MP3 player but it seems when I add songs to it alot of them come up as UNKNOWN, then when I go to play them it zaps me back to the menu. Whats the deal with this because they play just fine on my computer?

I have owned the e270 about 8 months now. No problems except had bum sd card (not sansa's fault) replaced card and full 8 gigs are now showing.
There are a few things to do if you own one of the 200 series players.
1. get the sansa updater program from sansa's website.
2. learn what the difference is between the 2 USB settings on the device.
3. Import CLEAN files from your computer. what i mean here is that this unit cannot handle unusual keyboard characters in the file name, folders OR the ID tags. Stick with normal numbers and letters. I have had to format co-workers devices due to this. Unreadable, inaccessible areas of the unit will result from uncommon characters.
4. Usually, a simple format will fix most unrecoverable problems. ALWAYS keep treasured media backed up.
5. Read a little in the forums at sansa's website. Any issue you have, somebody probably beat you to it.

I have had the same problem with the SD card - Ended up with Kingston which was more expensive in long run - but hey was false ecomomy. Good wee player - very happy
