MPIO ONE Review
Currently the MPIO ONE is the smallest PMP, sporting a one inch 65K color OLED screen. The player supports MP3, WMA, WMA DRM, and OGG audio formats. On the video side it only supports MP4, but the included software easily converts MPEG4, WMV, AVI, DivX, and XViD for playback. Additionally, the ONE can handle JPEG and TXT files.
MPIO has packed quite a few features in this tiny package including a high end Wolfson audio processor. Additionally they have filled the box with almost all of the accessories you need. Even though this player is priced at a premium it is definitely something you should consider.
Inside the Box
When it comes to bundled accessories, MPIO did not hold back. The player comes with headphones, neck strap, belt clip/carrying case, arm band, USB transfer cable, and conversion software. The only thing users might miss is a wall charger, but any universal USB wall charger will work and they can be found for under $10.
Software & Transferring Music
The MPIO ONE plugs into you computer and is immediately recognized as a storage device. Just drag and drop your files and you are ready to go. The installation of software in not needed.
One of the two pieces of software included is a utility program that is used to upgrade the firmware and recover media files.
The other is a transcoding utility which converts video files to MP4 file formats so that they can be played on the device. This program is very straight forward and easy to use. When converting, the software will automatically shrink the frame size to 96x64 pixels, making the file considerably smaller. A 90 minute movie will shrink in file size to around 100 MEGs, so you will be able to hold around 15 hours of video on the 1GB sized player. During testing, it handled converting MPEG4, WMV, AVI, DivX, and XViD very well. On a 1.7 Ghz Centrino it took about 20 minutes to convert 90 minutes of video. This time will reduce considerably on a new desktop system.
Form Factor
The MPIO ONE is currently the smallest device with video playback, measuring 32 x 55 x 12 mm (23100 cu mm) and weighing in at 34.5g. Other tiny video playing devices in its class include the MobiBLU DAH-1700 and the iAudio U3, with both of them weighing and measuring 58 x 28 x 22 mm (35728 cu mm) / 35g and 31.5 x 72 x 18 mm (40824 cu mm) / 32.5g respectively.
The MobiBLU DAH-1700 has not been released in the US and probably never will be. As for the iAudio U3, it will be for sale in the US soon.
User Interface
The user interface is controlled by a five way directional button and four buttons located on each corner of the navigation area. Navigating through the files is a familiar file / folder structure which can be easily browsed by using the directional button. Music file browsing can be set up to be browsed by either file name or ID3 tag.
Features
Removable Disk: The player shows up as a removable disk so you can store any file you want on it. The down side to this is if you use it on the go you will have to carry around the somewhat bulky proprietary USB cable.
Speed Control: You are able to change the speed of the audio file being played. This would be very useful for audio books. But DJs, forget about beat matching because the player goes plus or minus 100% in increments of 25%.
Voice Recording: The voice recording functions just like any other in WMA format, but additionally you can monitor the recording with headphones before and during recording. Another unique feature is voice record scheduling. You can set the device to start recording at a specific time for a chosen length of time. This MP3 player could be used for devious spying; hiding it and around the house to see what your roommates really think of you.
FM/FM Recording: The FM radio works well with any headphones or earbuds plugged in, and up to 30 presets can be programmed. What is missing is an auto programming feature witch I find to be nice on players like the Zen Sleek. When recording FM radio it gets converted to WMA format. When the recorded WMA file is played back it sounds exactly like the radio, the difference is indistinguishable. You are also able to schedule an FM recording time.
EQ & Sound Enhancement: There are several presets (Normal, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Techno, Reggae, Live, Soft, Classic) and a 5 band user EQ, which is clean and responsive. The sound enhancements “3D” and “Dynamic Bass” sound unnatural. Perhaps it is something personal, but I think these types of “sound enhancements” sound terrible on any player.
Direct Encoding: The included USB cable also has a phono plug that will allow you to directly encode audio to the device. The down side to it is that the player will only encode in WMA up to 128kbps.
Games: The player comes preloaded with one game called “Push!! Push!!” which is a basic puzzle game. While the game is mildly entertaining it is nothing to get excited over. The manual and MPIO web site claim that you can download more games by updating the firmware. I have yet to see anything additional.
Lyric Display: This surprised me as a cool feature. The lyrics to the song can be displayed while the music plays. Each line of the song is displayed as they are sung. To use this feature you will have to download a free piece of software called mediaSync from MPIO’s website. The program will automatically find and insert lyrics into each file.
However if you listen to anything other than to top 40 pop music you are out of luck. When testing the mediaSync it could not find lyrics for anything really new or anything outside of the pop music realm.
Battery
The rated battery time is 11 hours of audio. During my test I have found that you will get about 3-4 hours of video off of a single charge or between 9-10 hours of audio playback. This time will vary depending on EQ / sound enhancement usage and how often you view the screen.
Picture Viewing
The MPIO ONE will decipher JPEG formats; however, large files will take a long time to load on the screen. A 300k JPEG file will take around 45 seconds to render on the screen. If you wanted to view pictures I would suggest shrinking them all to 96x64 pixels, so that they load immediately. You might want to do this when you use a slide show as a screen saver.
Audio Playback
Lower quality audio is a problem that plagues many flash based MP3 players, however this is not the case for the MPIO ONE. The MPIO shines when it comes to audio quality due to the user of a Wolfson audio processor, which is normally used in larger hard drive based MP3 players.
One area of the audio playback I would like to see improved is the track transition. While there is only a slight gap between tracks, I would like to see gapless playback so my continuous mixes sound seamless.
Another thing to mention is the device by default is set to fade in and out a track. I find this annoying but it can easily be changed in the settings.
Video Playback
I was a bit skeptical about watching anything on this tiny 96x64 pixel one inch screen, but it is not as bad as I had thought. I comfortably used it on plane fights to catch up on TV shows I missed that week. The video is very fluid and can be viewed from any angle, but you do miss some detail when viewing certain things. For instance, if you are watching an episode of The Simpsons, you would not be able to read what Bart writes on the black board in the beginning credits.
There is one major annoyance when watching video. The play time and track number is constantly displayed at the top of the screen, as shown in the pictures. There is no option to get rid of this. I am sure that it can be fixed with a firmware update. MPIO, are you listening?
Conclusion
The MPIO ONE is a very solid flash based MP3 player. It comes equipped with a high end Wolfson audio processor which allows it to out perform most hard drive based MP3 players. Secondly, the MPIO ONE is a video player. While you will miss some detail while you watch video on the 1 inch screen, it is easier to watch than you would expect from such a screen that small.
The price of the ONE is set at about $40 above a typical one gig MP3 player at $170. Considering that they include all accessories, a first-class audio processor, and video playback, it warrants a premium price tag.
Purchasing
For those in the US you can find it at most of the major brick and mortar electronic retail chains or right now Amazon has for a good price. Those of you in the UK and the rest the world, AdvanceMP3Players will ship it to you where ever you are.
Pros
Excellent Sound Quality
All Available Accessories Included
Universal Mass Storage, No Drivers Needed
Included Conversion Software
Cons
Non-removable battery
Proprietary USB cable
Slow picture viewing
Encoding limited to WMA
Update: The MPIO ONE is no longer the smallest video player. That award now goes to the IPOS Z5. Thanks Kam3!

When you say "The MobiBLU DAH-1700 has not been released in the US and probably never will be.", do you specifically mean the 1700? I have the 1700i (which in many ways is superior to the standard 1700) which I purchased from Walmart.com some 4 months ago.
Great player, although I am considering giving my cube to my son and buying the one reviewed here.

Oops, my bad. I meant the 1500. Sorry, forgot my coffee this morning :)

Amazon.com is the only place that has this hot DMP in stock, I searched every brick and mortar store for the MPIO One and it wasn't even listed in their inventories!!!! I can't wait for mine to come in the mail though, I payed for 1 day shipping which I never do!

Quick question: While the device is off, if you press the REC button does it will power up and start recording? Thanks.
EnzoTen on December 6, 2005 9:08 PM
Nick: No it does not power up and record... i just tried.

Boris, reviewer, whomever - how's the build quality on these things? I tend to be pretty tough on my electronics; will this hold up okay?
Kam3 on December 7, 2005 5:47 PM
great review. looks really nice, but you should never use absolutes in declaring something. The Mpio One is not the smallest Flash DAP with video. the iOps Z5 is smaller, its extruded aluminum case measuring in at 29x55x13 mm or 20735 cu mm. It's probably not the smallest either. it has almost all the same features still. in fact they have almost the same form factor button layout included, but who's to say which inspired which.
what type of screen does the Mpio have?
Vlad on December 7, 2005 8:06 PM
You forget to mention VAD (voice activity detection).
And how easy it is to create lyrics for any song.
Boris on December 7, 2005 9:57 PM
So far as i had it, the buid quality seemed pretty solid. The screen didnt scratch in my pocket, and the player is scratchless too. I dont treat it very carefully, but have only managed to drop it a few times. So far it's working great. A complaint that I have is that the clip which is used to hold the player holds it weakly. I dont know if its just my clip, but the player can easily be pushed out of the holder. This annoys me a bit, but I dont think its a major problem. It seems pretty solid in my hand, and i dont think it will be damaged much by light foul play.

I enjoy reading your side, keep posting more. Great review.

YES!! I finally got mine today. It's soo SMALL!! The pictures make it look bigger than it is. All my mp3's sound awesome. I used to have a zen micro 512mb player and it sounded okay, my new MPIO One sounds amazing. The player is solid, it doesn't feel flimsy. The belt clip is a little weak though, a good tug on the headphones and it pops right out. Videos look great, it'll be awesome to watch something at work when it's slow. Great review guys, you sold me on this DMP.
victor on December 9, 2005 12:50 AM
Dude, have you actually used it ?
CONS: Recording from FM sounds BAD. There is a periodic "buzz" that is very anoying. Sounds like something generated as buffers fill and are transfered.
The video does look nice, but the reason you can't read it is beacause its REVERSED. Like watching a TV screen fom the "wrong side". But it is clear.
Pro: The playback quality of mp3s made elsewhere is very good.
Vlad on December 9, 2005 1:18 AM
Dude, there is some thing wrong with your player or place where you are trying to record radio. There is nothing wrong with mine or some one else’s. Radio recording is much better then I would ever to expect.
Some problems though: you will not be able to change time after upgrading firmware. And there are no additional games so far. And there is always time and volume on the screen during video playback.
Justin on December 17, 2005 5:28 PM
I got the One (the technical name is FG200) yesterday, FedEx'ed after buying it from Target.com. It's a good player, but it's not without problems. The huge key problem is that there is no organization at all within the player. There is no way to search for files, and no way to sort files. I have my music files organized by name on my computer through the removable disk (I'm using an iMac), but they turn out in completely different order on the player. Maybe this is just a Mac problem. The casing also feels a little cheap, and there is no option to turn the screen saver off without having the screen stay on indefinetly. The player also does not play AAC files, which means your out of luck if you buy from iTunes. On the up side, audio quality is good, and the colorful screen doesn't torture the eyes. FM radio reception is better than it is on my portable CD player, and is better than I expected on this tiny player, which is another upside. It also hardly weighs anything, and controls are pretty basic, but navigation could be better.

EnzoTen said: The MPIO ONE plugs into you computer and is immediately recognized as a storage device. Just drag and drop your files and you are ready to go.
Does this mean it has a built-in USB plug? I'd prefer this over the 2 in 1 USB cable that comes with it. What about a timer/clock? (The Mobiblu DAH-1700 and Safa Q100 do, but I think they lack a built-in USB plug.)
Thanks!
EnzoTen on December 21, 2005 7:48 AM
Deb:
There is no built in USB plug. It is a seperate proprietary cable unfortunatly. Take a look at the 4th picture from the top.
And yes the player does have a clock.=)

Hi,
1)
We charged our new FG200 MPIO for 4 hours. During that time, the battery icon kept flashing. The FG200 "Quick Guide" manual, the Manual on the FG200 CD and the online 48-page manual simply state that when the battery is charged, the battery icon changes to the same battery icon. What does that mean? This is either a grammar or an image printing problem in the manuals. Do they mean to say that once the battery is charged, the battery icon will stop flashing? Or if the flashing battery icon is supposed to change into another icon... then exactly what is that changed icon?
2)
The Best Buy store salesman told us that we can use the FG200 with a computer that has 1.1 USB's without any problem. Now we're wondering: Will the FG200 not work completely with a 1.1 USB? Will it work only with a 2.0 USB? When we connected it to a 1.1 USB, the FG200 displayed a plug-in picture on its screen. After a few moments, it went into its flashing battery icon mode.
3)
After the FG200 was charged for 4 hours for the first time and disconnected from the 1.1 USB, none of the FG200 lever/button movements had any effect. The FG200 screen just remains black. Does a 1.1 USB charge the FG200 twice as slow as a 2.0 USB?
marcus on December 27, 2005 12:24 PM
using my usb 2.0 interface, charging it with the power off leaves just a flashing battery icon in the middle of the screen, which stops when it's done charging.
not to sound dense, but lorenzo: did you try holding down the 'play' button for a few seconds until the power came on?
i don't really have any intentions of using it as a video/image viewer, but it's sturdy, and the audio quality, fm reception, and ogg support are great. love that it functions as a usb hard drive to just drag and drop files without having to go install and use some other program every time.
like justin mentioned, my one single gripe so far is that when i copy folders over, the order is seemingly random, instead of in at least alphabetical order, and this is coming from an xp machine. it's possible that i wasn't sorting alphabetically in windows explorer before dragging it over though. hoping that that's the solution, as it really messes with the orders of continuous mixes i have.
Lorenzo and Jack on December 28, 2005 10:42 AM
Thanks, Marcus. My son Jack pressed the play/pause button for a few seconds and then the MPIO worked okay.
(Still, our flashing battery icon just kept on flashing after 4 hours of charging.)
You make a good point about alphabetical order.
Also, it would be good to be able to remove the onscreen info while a video is playing.
One more thing: The MPIO FG200 manual states that MPIO games are available for download at the MPIO sites. But we were not able to find any.
Does anybody know at what site addresses / links we can get games that work on the MIPIO?
True, the small screen is not as good as playing a game on a bigger screen, but MPIO games could come in handy sometimes...
Thanks.

My player would suddenly stop. After several attempts at turning it on, it would finally restart. It happened again today. But this time no matter how many times I tried turning it back on, nothing happened. I figured simply plugging in the USB cable would get it started; it didn't. Then I pressed the reset button and the player came back on! The manual says that all menu settings will return to default settings. I thought I had lost settings and files, but this did not happen.

Ben, try a differnt USB port. Some are not powered.
LeXeR, the mp3 converter will directly conver the line-in input to MP3. it has nothing to do with converting already loaded mp3s

Hey SG, you're flash chip is corrupted now. You have to send it in for repair. MPIOs master plan. Mine has gone bad twice now. The MPIO I have is like a one time use then goes into write protection. Fill it up once and never upload again or the error will continue. Oh yeah, it didn't have the wolfson chip in it guaranteed, it has a phillips. When i saw the mpio manager i knew mpio sucked!
JisTheOne on November 25, 2006 10:25 PM
I don't know the cost for "flash chip badness" replacement as MPIO calls it. Your battery flap where the reset button came off? It is just a snap in piece that was being held in place by the hold switch. Don't pry out the little hold switch because it will launch and disappear somewhere. I heard that the new Ipod shuffle is super loud, go for it and tell us about it. Yeah the MPIO Utility looks like a cheap radio from the 80's with poor english translation. "firmware upgrade fail!" RIGHT Enzoten?
thranx on December 17, 2006 2:50 PM
ipod Shuffle? I'll tell you what's good about it... It's small! Sound quality is mediocre at best, no highs and no lows, all midrange. The volume output is surprisingly loud but flat. I hooked it up to my home system and even with 10db gain on the bass, there wasn't a major improvement in the bass.
Then there's itunes 7.0 with strictly enforced DRM, itunes 7.0 will delete any songs in the ipod if the same songs are not in your HD at the time of re-sync/recharge. And ipod Shuffle 2 is incompatible with itunes 6.0xx. I assume the latest ipod Nano et al probably suffers from the same affliction as the iPod swindle. I am returning mine and will never touch another iPod, at least not the latest incarnation of them.

I also have lost my usb cable, where can I order a new one? I've been to several stores, none of them carry it.
Please let know where I can find one.

does anybody know how to transcode more than a 4 minute song? i have to use a video editor or converter to get format to mpeg1 file so the pmp transcoder can see the whole file. it plays fine in the transcoder, saves o.k., and downloads ok, but it only plays for about 2:45 before cutting off. if i try to convert to an MP4 directly with the right resolution (96x64) and then drag and drop, the file name shows in the playlist, but is skipped by the player. if anybody has done this, can you let me know what issues are required? it is possible i am not converting to MPEG1 or MP4 at the right fps or bitrate. any help would be appreciated.
