Sony HD1 HD3 HD5 Volume Limit Unlock

sony-hd1-hd3-hd5.jpg

I was browsing eBay today and I found a few individuals selling information on unlocking the volume limit on the Sony Network Walkmans for about two bucks a pop. I see this as unethical; it’s not their information to sell. So I thought I would post this information to spread the word and to keep these fools from making money off readily available information that is not their own. Below are the same instructions you would pay for on eBay.

Start the player. Start playing a song. Turn the HOLD function on by sliding the swich at the top. Then, Hold the SEARCH/MENU button and enter the button sequence: Right, Right, Left, Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, Up, Down. Let go of the buttons, and put the HOLD switch back to its original position. The backlight will cut out and you'll be in the service menu with "POWER" displayed. Press DOWN a few times to select OTHERS and press Right to get into the menu. Keep pressing down until you get to SP SET (Sound Pressure Setting). Press Play/Pause to get into change the option. Then press SEARCH/MENU to toggle the option on or Off (obviously, Off is for louder sounds). Then either hold STOP or remove the battery to get the player out of the service mode. For some reason, you'll have to go back into the player's options to manually turn the backlight on again after doing this.

[source: AVForums]

I have done this myself with success on my NW-HD5. However, I accept no responsibility, do it at your own risk.

Update: If you have the Sony NW-A1000 or NW-A3000 there here is a volume limit unlock for that player as well.

I've done this on both the HD3 and HD5 and it works fine with no ill effects at all. Just stay away from any other options on the hiden menu.

Well worth doing as it makes these players sound like they should, which is very good :-)

hi i tried this on the hd1 and ther is no hidden menu appearin up on the screen and i have followed all ur instructions properly...
is ther another way of doing this procedure?

Grums on September 14, 2005 10:55 AM

Nope! Doesn't work for my HD3, European version. Crap! I have been looking for this hack for a long time so it sucks that it doesn't work. :(

EnzoTen on September 14, 2005 3:25 PM

Try going to the AVForums for help if you cant get it to work... They have reported that it works for all the players.

This has worked for me on my HD5...great...chers

Jeremy Woods on October 11, 2005 8:23 AM

I have used this hack successfully on my new HD5 -It still isn't loud enough for some of those older low level CDs. As well as having to reset the backlight on, my player had switched to one song mode with repeat on - very odd!

Stuart Jukes on October 17, 2005 8:48 AM

Just done this on mine and it works a treat! Toooo loud! Just one thing though, there is a key-press missing on the above list, once you have toggled the options with the Search button you need to press the left key to exit the menu BEFORE pressing the stop otherwise it doesn't save the change. I did it as above and couldn't hear any difference until I went back and tried again with the extra key press. Good luck.

I was wandering whether the same work around exist for a Sony NW-E99.

Can anyone help????

Mahesh on October 30, 2005 9:30 AM

It does work for the Sony HD3 but you need to hold down the MODE button instead of the menu button. Excellent

Tobin on November 7, 2005 11:31 AM

I was wondering if anybody had and knowledge of what
the other functions do in the service menu. I would rather not use trial and error for the risk of altering something integral.

I am using an NW-HD1.

PLEASE HELP! It works but the thing is it won't save. As a matter of fact it only works if i play a song and enter the directional combination to get into the service menu. When i reset my hd5 it doesn't save the volume unlock. what am i missing?

you have to press the play/pause button to exit the menu

Hi

I had a Rio Carbon for 11 months and it died.

Went into Dixons and almost bought a Samsung. BUT they said that ALL MP3 players now need a £25 adapter to charge them!!!!

So, because of the 40 hour playback time I got an HD5.

Firstly, Sonic Stage is a pain in the a**.

Secondly, I paid £210 for this unit. Sound quality is O.K. though.

BUT - should I have got the new 20gb Walkman instead or even swap it for the Samsung.

Comments welcome.

Cheers.

I have a sony nw-hd5, and I tried doing that sound unlock thing, but when it came to the - 'sp set' I pressed play/pause, and I only had the option of 'yes'. Also when I went out of the options, normal playback screen, I have a '1' next to the battery logo. How can i get rid of it? PLEASE HELP..cheers

Alex on November 27, 2005 8:53 AM

hey yeh i just did it on my nw-hd5. I have adapted the instructions to work, saving the configurations. The one stands for 'one song playback' and the bent arrow is 'repeat' just go to 'options' and turn them on/off as appropriate. Anyway where are the updated guidlines for unlocking your player........

Start the player. Start playing a song. Turn the HOLD function on by sliding the switch at the top. Then press play again to go back to the SP SET menu. Now hold STOP to get the player out of the service mode. For some reason, you'll have to go back into the player's options to manually turn the backlight on, repeat and one song playback off after doing this.

Solver on December 29, 2005 5:03 PM

To anyone that owns the HD1 and would like to get this to work...instead of pressing menu you have to press mode so the following steps would be...

Start the player.

Start playing a song.

Turn the HOLD function on by sliding the swich at the top.

Then, Hold the MODE button and enter the button sequence:

Right, Right, Left, Left, Right, Left, Right, Left, Up, Down.

Let go of the buttons, and put the HOLD switch back to its original position.

Kate on December 30, 2005 8:42 AM

I tried the following on my HD5 but it turns back to normal sound again after i switch it off - what might i be doing wrong?:
Start the player. Start playing a song. Turn the HOLD function on by sliding the switch at the top. As soon as you get to this point it gets twice as loud. Press DOWN a few times to select OTHERS and press Right to get into the menu called "LCD NP". Keep pressing down until you get to SP SET (Sound Pressure Setting). Press Play/Pause to get into change the option. Then press SEARCH/MENU to select "ON" or "OFF" (obviously, OFF is for louder sounds). Then press play again to go back to the SP SET menu. Now hold STOP to get the player out of the service mode. When i switch it back on it goes to normal sound. I have also tried removing the battery at this stage. I also do have to for some reason, go back into the player's options to manually turn the backlight on, repeat and one song playback off after doing this.

kate on January 3, 2006 10:19 AM

Anybody get any advice. I don't think i explained myself properly.
1. I followed the instructions but when you get to the bit where The backlight cuts out and "POWER" is displayed it gets twice as loud. Is this supposed to happen here?
2. then when you Press DOWN a few times to select OTHERS and press Right to get into the menu should the menu be called "LCD NP"?
3. When you say use the play/pause button to toggle i presume you mean select "on" or "off" When i got to this it was on "on" so i pressed the play/pause button to "off". From this point there are sever different bits of advice on what to do next. I have tried a removing the battery, b switching it off by holding doen the stop key, c i have pressed play/pause again and then swiched it off and another time removing the battery. d I have pressed the left key once then held the stop buttone down and a different time removed the battery. In all these scenarios when i switch it back on it is quiet again - what am i doing wrong???? I as long with the othere have found that for some reason i have to go back into the player's options to manually turn the backlight on, repeat and one song playback off after doing this but that's easy enough just thought it might help with the diagnosis. Please help someone!!!! Kate

Please somebody help!

kate on January 8, 2006 1:05 PM

HD5 Volume control restriction - I have answered my own questions! if you look at the above I couldn't get these instructions to work. The answer according to www.avforums.com is that the newer HD5s may have been changed slightly. Some recommended to try and change the country code to US. I found that this finally lifted the volume restriction BUT you then have to follow the original insructions too afterwards. Please see what to do from start to finish:

To change to US first enter the service menu the same way (Start playing a song. Turn the HOLD function on by sliding the switch at the top. As soon as you get to this point it gets twice as loud. Press DOWN a few times to select OTHERS) Now the instructions change from above: press ">" then up and down to "DEST". Press the play/pause key and use the search/menu key until "US" is displayed, press play/pause again and then hold the stop key to exit). When you switch it back on the volume has gone back to normal but there's more.....

I don't know if it makes any difference but at this point, with a song playing, I went to sound in the option menu and turned all the bass and treble to max in custom 1 in the 6-band equaliser menu and made sure that custom 1 and 6 band equaliser were ticked before going back to the playback screen.

After this you then follow the original instructions: make sure there is a song playing. Turn the HOLD function on by sliding the switch at the top. As soon as you get to this point it won't go twice as loud as it did before. When I switch it back on it was twice as loud and I had to reset the bass and treble back to zero because it was tooooo loud!! You do, as all above comments, have to go back into the player's options to manually turn the backlight on, repeat and one song playback off after doing this. Hope this is of some help

Thanks John Doherty - just did a bit of searching... Although I was convinced i have fixed it; I'm now not so sure - if i'm on the underground it's still a little hard to hear it sometimes. Also I have noticed that my 6-band equaliser doesn't seem to work anymore??. Perhaps I'm not so great afterall! Also Raj is talking about the HD3 not the HD5 ;0)

john doherty on January 16, 2006 3:11 PM

No probs Kate but if you re-enter service mode does the volume increase (Y/N) I assume if not then you have corrected??? It was also recommended to me to download the firmware ver 1.2 from the US Sony site. Have your players dest set to 'US' and apply upgrade so not sure if this would load a non restricted version of volume control. Any thoughts????

Rachel on May 5, 2006 12:22 AM

Hey I have a HD5. Is there not a way of going into Genres, selecting a genre, such as dance. Pressing play and then just letting it go through and continuously play all the songs in that selected genre? It seems that it catergorises the tracks into artists within the genre, and then when I press play, it plays only the songs that are by that artist, and then stops! Can it not just keep playing through all of the artists within that genre until it finishes? Kind of annoying, as some artists only have one or two songs under their name, so as soon as its played those two songs, it stops! And then when you press play again it just replays those same two songs, rather than moving on to the next artist. Im being naughty and sneakily listening to it at work, so I want to be able to choose a genre, hit play and let it run, rather than having to take it out of my drawer every few minutes and manually move it on to the next artist. Does anyone know what Im talking about?? Thanks! :-)

Let go of the buttons, and put the HOLD switch back to its original position. The backlight will cut out and you'll be in the service menu with POWER displayed. Press DOWN a few times to select OTHERS and press Right to get into the menu. Keep pressing down until you get to SP SET. Press Play/Pause to get into change the option. Then press MODE to change the option to ON. Then turn the battery off to get the player out of the service mode. On the hd1 you will NOT need to reset the backlight.

It is slightly louder, but nothing that great.

I use my nw-hd1 in the 'line out' mode for use in my car audio system. I just purchased am 'rm-mc40elk' to allow me to more easily 'adjust' stuff while the nw-hd1 safely resides within my console. But, with this remote plugged in the 'line out' option is inactivated (I understand the legitimate reasons for this, but I am not using headphones). Is there a way to have the 'line out' option not deactivate when the rm-mc40elk is plugged in? PS. an earlier version of a remote does not inactivate the line out but I 'upgraded' to the rm-mc40elk for the 'displau'

Chili on August 13, 2006 1:51 AM

I plug me NM-HD1 into my auxiliary car audio input. When listening through me car audio, I much prefer to use the "line-out" mode because the sound is great. I purchased an RM MC40ELK remote but when with it plugged in, the 'line-out' option becomes unavailable. I understand the reason for this, but I still would prefer the line out sound through my car audio. Does anyone know a way to do this with the RM MC40ELK (I have been able to do it with older remotes but with no display)

The kicker is that my car audio system has an IPOD ready input that displays the IPOD contents on the car audio display (ouch)

Superb. It works! Just to review what some people seems to have problem with:

Remember to save at the end;
Press play/pause button to get out of on/off meny.

For HD-3 hold down MODE button instead.

Anyways, does anyone know what the rest of the functions are for? If there are to be some other uncharted gold mines in this HD-machine, I would very much like to know.

Thanks in advanced, and to the an extra one to the author of the original text!

Bypass all the volume limiters and vastly improve the volume and music qualify by buying a dedicated headphone amp- portable if you want to stary on the move. The just select line-out and bingo!!!

Ruairi on January 3, 2007 12:46 PM

Thanks for the de-restriction advice, now a new problem...

I have a Nw-HD3 which was recently bumped when someone tried to take it from me. It didn't fall far, about 25 cm. It landed on a padded plastic seat which really isn't hard.

Sadly, now it won't play - almost as if the harddrive isn't spinning up. I turn it on, the Walkman logo appears for a few seconds, then the player turns off. I took it to a Sony shop and was told that this would cost £60 to send to Sony themselves, then minimum £150 to fix (anyone starting to see a iPod-esque service here?)

The player is obviously out of warrenty as I've had it 2 years, but it has been treated like gold on all occasions before this and is supposed to have a fair amount of shock protection from the airbags. anyone know anything about taking this player apart & trying to fix it myself??

Any help appreciated, although I don't get online very often. If you could send instructions to my email addy, I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks

PLEASE HELP! REWARD OFFERED!
hi i have an nw-hd1 and i recently reinstalled the version of sonicstage i've been using as my computer was wiped, and since connecting my player up to sonicstage, the computer wont let me bring any songs from the player back onto the computer because it thinks they came from a different computer, even thought they didn't.
and although i can see all the tracks that are on my player as they are displayed on the computer when its connected, when the player is removed it says 'no database found'
a newer version of sonicstage tells me that i have to wipe the player to use this new version, but i desperately need to keep alot of what i have on the player, and i don't have backups!
anyone who can tell me what to do to fix my player will be sent a cash reward!
i'm desperate!
thanks a heap

MerleOne on January 19, 2007 6:01 PM

Did you try with the latest version of SonicStage ? However I am afraid you are in trouble, unless you had a backup of your SonicStage Database, done with the special backup tool provided with SStage. In that case you would be able to reimport your songs from this backup, then upload them again to the HD1.

WP on March 21, 2007 10:14 AM

Ruairi - My friend had the same problem yesterday. Dropped it on the floor (which has happened a few times before--less than 3 ft down). It now does not play at all. He doesn't even get the Walkman logo. Since Sony no longer sells high capicity players, he is now looking into buying...gulp...an ipod. I know it has been a couple months since this happened to you, but were you ever able to fix this?

sweeney - The same thing happened to me also. What I ended up doing, was first contact Sony and have them remove all of the pcs that are showing under SonicStage (except the current one). Next, I removed the current pc attached through SonicStage. I then Reformatted and Recovered my pc. Re-installed all of the software for SonicStage. I was able to move tracks from my player to "My Library"again. However, I could not add any new tracks unless I deleted what was on my player. I then pulled all of the tracks from my player to "My Library", then deleted all the tracks from my player, then retransferred them all back to my player.
I know, it seems like a long and tedious task, just for something so simple, but when I tried contacting Sony about it (prior to my reformat), they said the only thing I can do is delete the tracks from my player and basically start over. I guess it depends on how many songs you have to determine if it is worth it. I had easily over 1500 songs and there was no way I was going pull out my whole cd collection again and upload the tracks.

ok,, i tryd this on my hd5, & couldnt find the 'SP SET' while trying to find it, my fat ass fingers mustve caught the wrng button, the lights came back on, then off, then i found the 'sp set' great,, it was already set to 'off', oh well, f*it, i went to use it again, & no tracks,, all everything gone, it wont contect to my computa, its f*kd! any ideas? i'm a touch on the f*kd off side, as i'm travelling, & have just lost 18gig of music from home! :( & couldnt back it up on my laptop (due to sony's butf*kin software - it wont stop people pirating music u chumps),
as for dropping it & not working? that was the only thing about this sak of sh*t that is good, i have dropped it plenty & the aluminium case does the trick.
please,, can anyone help? or i'll have to break the law & download as much as i can find,
by the way,,, F**k u sony,, welcome to the modern age,,, people change computers,, so when your using a "mass storage device" people will probably want to move that "mass storage" dicks!

omgwtf on April 5, 2007 1:12 PM

STILL is right. WTF should I do if no sonicstage starts at my pc. (how the f$%k should I know why?) I'm using ml_sony and winamp and all I get is "CANNOT PLAY TRACK ERROR". Sony software sucks.

still pssd on April 5, 2007 4:54 PM

hey, obviously there is a few of these units around,, & apart from sony being useless at software, theyre not bad machines,,,

now i aint a software guru (by any standards) but is there a way we can hack into these toys, & over-ride them with a better programme than sonic stage,, f**k even media player would be better,,, ok,, windows program could be a little far fetched, but anything..

omgwtf, you can download sonicstage for free off sony, but dont be surprised if half the tracks still "CANNOT PLAY TRACK ERROR" i found a few of them still do

so,, anyone know how to hack into these little badboys?

Doc DJI on April 15, 2007 4:04 PM

Can someone tell me what docking systems are compatible with the
HD-5. I love this system, have had no problem with volume control increase, but I would like to get info on the docking system that works as well as how to hook up to car stereo.
Thanks!

PS: I'm new to the technology

still pssd on April 16, 2007 9:42 AM

dont know about docking systems,, but... when i had a car(etcetc) i purchased a pugney lead,, which is simply a headphones, to rca cable,, worth about 5$, & plugged it straight into my amp,, i had the advantage of having several external amps,, else your head unit may have rca inputs in the back of it
;) good luck,,
oh yeah,, make sure that they are rcaINPUTS that you plug into & not PREOUTS,, or outputs,, you might find your HD5 losing its smoke if you get it wrong

fez on May 19, 2007 4:06 AM

i am technologically illiterate i bought a sony walkman off my friend awhile ago i deleted everything on it and pasted my songs on it but now all the screen says is no database, what is a database and how do i get one? if you could please help me email me at shortyhyperkid@hotmail.com it took me all day just to find this site so when i close it down i wont be able to find it again. i hope someone know what to do.

wolf on May 22, 2007 2:44 AM

awesome - the backlight can be turned on through that sys menu.
Cant remember how I did it though..

worked a treat on my NW-HD1

still pssd on May 28, 2007 7:32 PM

fez... you have to use a sony program called sonic stage,, its absolute crap,, & i wouldnt wipe my arse with it,,, but sadley i have to, as i also own a hd5.. so this means you cant drop & drag,, the files will be there,, but only on the hard drive,, you cant access them without a computer now,, & if you use sonic stage,, you can only access them with YOUR computer..

heres a new option,, everone with an hd5 have a look at what i found....

http://web.mit.edu/semenko/sony-hacks/sonicstage.html

according to this guy,, this bypasses the need for sonic stage & all the crap that goes with it,, i'm about to try it,, as my hd5 is all but fkd now anyway, so i have nothing to lose,, (the p.o.s already deleted all my music,, 20gigs worth!!! & i'm literally on the other side of te world,, with a new computer!)

will post again if i find that it works :)

still pssd on June 8, 2007 7:04 AM

ok boys & girls,, this is it!!! yes, it works, & it works great,, sadly, my hd5 is on its last legs, & shits the bed halfway thru connecting to my pc, & i keep losing my screen :( but anyway,, this program works, & transferring is at least 3 times faster than sonic stage!!! NO SHIT!!!! it does have its flaws, but everything does.
you cant change track names once they are in the file, & the music listing is a little odd, but its good,, i also found the link that is on the link doesnt work,, so download it at
http://www.sonydigital-link.com/DNA/Downloads/downloads.asp?c=WM&sc=NWF&t=lp&f=lp_mp3&l=en
is that a sony website i hear you ask?? yes it is,, obviously the c**ksuckers at sony either dont talk to each other (like the firmware upgrade,, "please transferr your music to your computer so you dont lose it during the upgrade" (you f**kin cant with fony!!) ) or, they dont want you to know you have an option!!

anyway,, it works, so enjoy,, but,, you will probably have to start again with your music,, so be prepared to lose all your music & start again

:)

What makes me love this player is it's ultra slick sexy design, very easy- just pick up and use interface, and killer sound quality that would make Cowon users envious. This player is a must buy for anyone who sports a premium set of headphones. Full review to come but you should really just buy one.
